“Really good BUT needs to concentrate on the detail”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 December 2013

Our experience of this beautiful hotel started really badly. In fairness it came good in the end BUT only after a lot of complaining and the threat of a bad review.

When we arrived at 3:00pm to check into our DOUBLE room we were told our TWIN ROOM was not quite ready and we could go wait in the bar for 5 or 10 minutes.

So straight away our eagerly awaited relaxing break is off to a rocky start from: A) wrong room type, and B) it’s not even ready... (which, given the late check in, really isn’t acceptable when paying 5 star prices).

We pointed out that we had in fact booked a DOUBLE (not a twin) and the receptionist just “waffled” past this in order to get us away from check in without addressing the problem. We were directed to the bar where the alarm bells really started ringing as it was full of other disgruntled looking guests... clearly in a similar position.

45 minutes later (after 2 further trips to reception) we were told that our twin room was ready!
Given the lateness of the day (and my rising blood pressure) we gave it the benefit of the doubt and went to check the room where we were disappointed to find two single beds pushed together.

It took me 3 further calls to reception, the Duty Manager and the threat of a bad review before we were told they could find us a double room after all BUT it would take a further few hours... bare in mind it’s now 4:30pm and our relaxing short break is very quickly slipping away from us.

I suggested that we would go and chill in the (excellent) spa whilst our things were moved to the correct room and in fairness the reception did offer us a bottle of wine in recompense.

Clearly the hotel had overbooked and were trying to “palm us off” with a twin room which is understandable at a £30 a night place BUT NOT AT £160.

It was our engagement night and also our last night in our hometown ofYork before we moved abroad so we wanted to stay somewhere special. Whilst the hotel is a stunning building and it was an enjoyable stay it falls far shirt of it's 5 star billing. 5 star means getting the little thing right, here they didn't even seem to bother. After booking a deluxe room and after checking in we returned after a final trip around the City to find we'd been moved, we knew this because they'd simply crossed the old room number out on our documents and hand written the new number on. We went up to the room to find it a twin room rather than double, no champagne that had been ordered and our bags still in storage. Surely in a 5 star these little things get done, you shouldn't have to chivvy them along. I also doubt the new room was anything other than a standard one. The meal we had was lovely, as was breakfast and the spa was nice if a little dingy. Whilst it was a nice stay, the value is poor and the hotel service falls a long way short of being the best that they are supposed to offer.

Cedar Court Grand is a fantastic hotel in York. Bedrooms are spacious and the beds and pillows are excellent to provide a very good night of sleep. The facilities are marvelous, staff are helpful and attentive. Certainly staying there again when going back to York.

My wife and I spend three very pleasant days in York staying at the Cedar Court Grand Hotel & Spa. We found it to be an excellent base to stay and explore this fantastic city. We found the rooms, facilities and food to be of the highest standard, and the staff in all areas to be friendly and helpful. We thoroughly recommend this hotel and would have no qualms about returning in the future.

Everything about this hotel was perfect. The location was within walking distance to the historical area of the city. The rooms were unusually large (it has been converted from offices for the railroad), clean, and top quality. The service was incredible though. First, when we walked up and booked a room, the bellman insisted on accompanying us to get our bags a block away (we had moved from an unsuitable hotel nearby). We loved every minute of our stay in this hotel, but the really unbelievable service came after we left. We were two hours down the highway south from York when we realized we had left our passports and my wallet in the room safe. Paul, who answered the phone, went to our room, got our things, and shipped them to our London hotel without a dime being gone from the wallet. He also called me after getting them sent off so I wouldn't worry. I wouldn't stay anywhere else if I ever get to return to York.

Stayed here with my husband for 2 nights as a mini break before Christmas. It is truly luxurious and set in the old railway offices the details that remain are fabulous. Our room was huge with 2 bathrooms and the bath was to die for. The bed was extremely comfortable and we didn't want to leave it. Everywhere was spotlessly clean and the staff were friendly and attentive. Valet parking is definitely worth paying for, if only for the ease of parking and knowing that you can call for your car day or night. We ordered room service on the 2nd night and it was superb. Breakfast was delicious and beautifully cooked. We felt truly pampered. My only complaint was the fact that children are not limited in the pool. It was a beautiful spa and peaceful until children arrived and you could see on the faces of couples who had paid for relaxation and treatments that sharing the pool with screaming children was not what they expected. Perhaps the hotel could think about making adult only swim times please. Otherwise a truly magical experience. Thank you.

Had an amazing stay in November for one night.
As soon as we arrived one of the concierge brought us to our room and explained all the facilites in detail. He was very helpful and suggested us different good restaurants in the area
The spa is also very relaxing.
If I recall correctly breakfast was not included in the rate.

Room Tip: The room and the bathroom were very spacious
