“Magnificent hotel with top class service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 January 2014

We booked a couple of nights at New Year's Eve in a double executive room and were very happy of our stay. The hotel building is a magnificent century old building, with beautiful large rooms with high ceiling and confortable bathroom. The pool and spa is very enjoyable an well maintained. We tried their grand afternoon tea that was great, and the room service was also very good. Prices were quite reasonable given the hotel quality and perfect service. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Double executive rooms at the ground floor are spacious and very confortable

We spent four nights at the Cedar Court over New Year and have very mixed feelings about it. The hotel has only been open a few years since its conversion from offices. On the positive side, the standard rooms are quite large & well furnished. The public rooms are very comfortable and a very good breakfast is served. The location is ideal for walking to all of York's attractions making a car of little use once you arrive.
On the negative side, tea ordered on arrival failed to materialise, some of the bedrooms on the first & second floors (at least) are plagued by a low frequency droning noise (not the in-room air con or the fridge) which in our first room was very intrusive in the dead of night. After mentioning this to reception we were eventually offered alternative rooms but with limited success. Maintenance clearly felt the issue was beyond them. We were booked in to the New Year Gala Dinner and while the food was very good and a four piece band provided lively music, it proved to be a real task to order a bottle of wine to have with the meal. There were no wine lists on the tables and when we did eventually order, it took nearly half an hour to turn up - long after we had finished our starters. Apparently our order got misplaced ! To make the situation worse, the waiter said "if it was up to me I would let you have it complementary but I'm not allowed to " . The kitchen may be geared up for functions but the bar clearly isn't.
This hotel clearly has the potential to offer a 5 star service to match its facilities but over our 4 days it didn't quite get there, although an honourable mention should go to the concierge team.

For a new year's eve birthday treat, my friend and I decided to book a spa day at the Cedar. I have stayed here before and found it to be a lovely experience.
However, not on this occasion. After calling the hotel to let them know we would be 5 minutes late, (traffic on the 40 mile journey) and asking if they could kindly take our car and park it (the car park is not on hotel grounds and we are not from York which would of course make us later, and which is a fantastic service offer that was offered to us previously). But, the conciarge told us they did not offer this service? i called reception again and the kind lady said she would come out because it IS offered. By this time we had caused a back log of cars pulling up waiting to be parked… so we had no choice but to move on. We had to find the car park (as i said we are not from york) then walk to the hotel with bags. This made us 30 minutes late.
I had already called the spa to let them know, and upon arrival, apologised again…. not one member of staff commented, we got a very frosty reception, and were told to fill out forms etc. We quickly did this and changed, and were taken into the treatment rooms where we literally froze. The rooms were absolutely freezing. I asked for another towel and continued to shiver throughout the treatments. Which had 30 minutes taken off due to the mix up in the car parking and our 5 minutes due to traffic.
Then, after our treatments, we thought we would go and chill in the Jacuzzi. It was broken. The pool was full of children, and the steam room was not hot at all.
By this point we decided to leave.
Upon leaving/paying, we told the spa manager how we felt, and that we should of at least be told the facilities were not in full working order BEFORE we arrived, she told us we would have received an email, still no email.
This was a special treat for my birthday and I feel like it was a complete waste of time and money. We found this to be very disappointing, as an ex spa manager I think the situation could of been better handled. We were not offered any kind of discount or apology for our disappointment.

Moving on, we checked into the Royal York Hotel where upon looking stressed and explaining our morning, the very kind receptionist sent us a bottle of champagne to our room to make up for it! That is what I call good customer service and we will definitely be recommending the Royal York from now on!

The hotel is in a fabulous building and is close to the station and within walking distance of the town centre, so a perfect place to stay to explore York. Our stay was comfortable, but I would say the little touches that make a hotel 5 star were missing. No bubbly wine on offer at breakfast, unlike every other 5 star hotel I have stayed in! Restaurant very cramped at breakfast. Lovely cold meats and smoked salmon on offer but no dressings or salads to accompany them like they have on the continent. The cooked breakfasts were very good and enjoyed by the rest of my family. The lounges were beautifully decorated and furnished but not enough seats for all the guests to sit and relax after dinner! Our room was huge but sparsely furnished and we never did get it warm. UHT milk in the fridge - fresh milk would have made so much difference. We did have a problem with our TV which we reported and a very helpful technician appeared very quickly to sort it out. The spa was small but adequate and the staff very helpful. We found the concierges to be helpful and the overall the service the staff gave was good. The Cedar Court is a lovely hotel but we felt some aspects fell short of it's 5 star rating.

We booked the two night new year break and added a further night at the end. We went for a classic room which was very comfortable although the heating system was a bit noisy and unreliable so we did have to request a heater. However, the housekeeping staff were very helpful and our heater arrived immediately. The food and service was excellent throughout our stay and would recommend the champagne afternoon tea. The menu in the grill restaurant is fairly limited but the steaks were perfectly cooked and presented. The wine list is very extensive and if you are a whiskey drinker you will be in heaven! The location is perfect and everything is within walking distance. We took advantage of the valet parking for a small additional cost. The live band on new year's eve was fantastic and we were disappointed when they finished at 12.30.

Absolutely shocking treatment from a 5* hotel. We got a phone call 20 minutes before we were due to check in to tell us they had double booked us and would have to pay to stay in a different hotel for the night and there was nothing they could do about it...... why had they only just realised?! After travelling a long distance to get to the hotel you can imagine our frustration and anger. Not what you expect from the apparent "York's best hotel". Disappointed is an understatement.

Two night break, 29/30 December in York made special by our stay at such a super hotel. The decor and rooms are superb. Very close to railway station.
All the staff, without exception, we're welcoming, efficient and so polite - nothing was too much trouble. Do not forget to make use of the Spa.
