“Nice hotel, a few tweaks needed.”
Reviewed 6 March 2014

We arrived early at 12 noon. The lady on reception took my mobile number and said she would ring us when our room was ready. We went into York for a walk around and at 4.30pm we were still waiting for the phone call. As it was raining heavily and we were cold, we decided to make our way back to the hotel. Got to reception, picked our key up and got in the room at .5.15.
Not happy bunnies, as my Mum is disabled and wanted to access our room for a rest before 5.15.
However, it got much better after that (apart from check out, that fiasco is at the end of review).
The evening meal was ok, starter fine, steak cooked perfectly but the apple crumble nearly broke my teeth it was that hard. Saving grace in the restaurant were the charming, wonderful, friendly staff. The room was really nice, only problem was it overlooked the bins at the back of the hotel. So was woken up at 6.30 to the sound of bottles being chucked into the bins. We had room service for breakfast, nice and wheeled in on a large table. We ordered two hampers which were tasty, but we had to ring and ask for the pastries which they forgot to put in. We went to the Spa for a chill, jacuzzi was broken and no water in the drinks machine by the pool. The two young girls who work there have obviously not been to the same charm school as the rest of the staff at Cedar Court.
Very unfriendly, we felt like we were in the way so didn't stay long. Staff in the lounge are so friendly and attentive. Cant fault the service, very enjoyable to sit in there for an hour or two and be looked after. Anyway onto check out. Went to settle the bill at reception, was handed my card back and started to walk away. Young man said "don't you want your receipt, we could have charged you anything". I replied "I'm sure it would be sorted out if you had". His reply was "no it would be too late then". So thanks for showing me up at checkout in front of people, just rounded my holiday off nicely. Suggested for next time...."excuse me Madam would you like a receipt". Rant over....but definately not 5* with staff like that on reception! Was thinking of going back in September for my Mum's birthday, but will read all the reviews on Trip Advisor first before I book.

Room Tip: Choose a room at the front, away from the bottle bins at the back of the hotel. Noisy in the morning...

My girlfriend and I stayed at the Cedar Court Grand Hotel & Spa in February 2014. The hotel was a perfect walking distance from the train station, approximately 5 mins, and on the way towards the city. The welcome we received on arrival was as you would expect from a 5-star hotel and we were shown up to the room by a very helpful member of staff who also provided us with useful information regarding exploration of York.
The room was perfectly clean and much larger than expected. The tea/coffee facilities and complimentary bath products were the finishing touches which give the stay that extra bit of class.
Complimentary use of the pool and spa facilities is included with all rooms and we took advantage of this with a dip the following day. The restaurant, bar, and lounge are all gorgeously decorated in a very grand manner, reminding you all the time that this is a top end hotel.
Overall, a very enjoyable stay at a great hotel that offered value for money in a perfect location only 5 minutes walk from within the city walls.

Room Tip: Even the basic room we had was as large as a suite

We went to York for 3 days and stayed in the Cedar Court Grand Hotel. This hotel was commissioned in 2011, in the old Headquarters of North eastern railways. we had a executive room. The room was huge and the bathroom was magnificent, with a separate shower cubicle with two shower heads. All the toiletries were Molten Brown. The rooms were cleaned very well and the bed turned for the night, which not all five star hotels do. The breakfast was excellent, with great Bacon and sausage. Dinner was mediocre, however and so we ate dinner only once. The cocktails at the Bar were very good .we had booked through secret Escapes and had the whole package for £125 a night, a 50% reduction and a bargain. The concierge peter was excellent and was very responsive .A small drawback was there was no double glazing and we could hear the traffic. But, all in all, very highly recommended.

We arrived by train on Sunday afternoon around 2.30 pm. The Hotel is directly across from the station. At reception we were told that our room wasn't ready and check in time was 3pm so were directed to wait in the lounge where we had a drink. There were several other people having a drink while they also waited for their rooms to be available. I'm not sure whether this was deliberate to get people to spend money in the bar. We were then given room 416 an executive room. The room was lovely with a large bathroom. The only downside, was directly opposite there was the housekeeping supply room so around 8am each morning there were 4 housekeeping trollies being noisily readied by equally noisy housekeepers. The spa facilities are nice and treatments not overly expensive. The staff are generally attentive and friendly. Overall the hotel is great and we will definitely return.

Stayed here for one night and everything was fantastic. Arrived earlier than expected but were told we could check in which was great. We were shown to our room by a friendly concierge and also given a little bit of history about the hotel too. Room was lovely and clean and very spacious. Molton Brown toiletries were a nice touch too. Were also provided with robes and slippers.
Bar area busy with nice cocktails.
The spa area is very relaxing which we used in the morning. Only slight thing that i would point out is maybe clearer directions to the pool/spa area - nearly ended up in staff locker rooms. lol.
Overall a lovely relaxing stay great location in York, and will be back.

We stayed for a weekend and generally enjoyed the hotel but were surprised to be given a £40 car parking bill for two nights. Surely such a luxury hotel should include car parking in their already expensive price. I would choose not to stay here again because of this.

I want to stress this review is for the afternoon tea only and not the hotel which we did not stay at.
We had high expectations given the five star status of this hotel and previous good reviews on tripadvisor. Sadly, it fell short of what we expected.
Where we were seated, we were the only people taking afternoon tea. There were a couple of people at the other end of the room having a very loud business meeting which spoiled the atmosphere.
The afternoon tea looked the part, very well presented. It came with an extra pot of hot water which we eventually realised was because our tea wasn't going to be refilled. No one asked us if we would like more tea which is usual service in this standard of hotel.
Neither my friend or I were keen on the sandwiches which had clearly been made in advance given that the bread had started to dry out. My fillings (vegetarian) were disappointing in terms of taste. My meat eating friend wasn't keen on hers either.
The scones were lovely.
The desserts looked wonderful but were bland and a huge disappointment.
Our server did comment on the food we had left but when we said we hadn't liked it nothing was done or said in response.
If we'd had this tea in a tea rooms and paid less I wouldn't have any complaints. However, for a five star hotel and for what we paid the service and standard of food was well below par.
We wouldn't return for afternoon tea or recommend it to others.
That said, this is still a beautiful building with an interesting history and I do plan to return as a guest at some point.
