“NOT 5 STAR”
Reviewed 3 June 2014

Really looked forward to a nice weekend away ,had a lovely welcome from receptionist however was interrupted by concierge asking her questions on behalf of another couple while she was actually dealing with me ( so rude ) room large carpet very grubby so you do need to wear the free slippers at all times bathroom large and Molton brown products a nice touch ,The bar was busy as wedding party seemed to fill it .had to wait a while for drinks friend had a cocktail and it was all ice only 2 sips and it was gone no Bacardi even though they are advertising Bacardi cocktails while I was at bar another 2 people asked for Bacardi ( cant believe they ran out ) breakfast ok only had continental but enough choice for most tastes .spa facilities ok nice pool and Jacuzzi steam room not bad but sauna tiny and someone had actually vomited in it so we could not use it. overall experience was ok but lots of negatives . hotel needs to be cleaned from top to bottom to suit my taste maybe I am being fussy but the price you pay you expect something nicer than this we would not stay again, better hotels in York .

Room Tip: ideal for train station .

Having visited for a drink soon after this opened and before any star rating, I really hoped the the hotel would establish itself as a genuine 5*.

It has.

A wonderful conversion of a tired old building (I remember visiting it as drafty, dusty run down railway offices) the interior design is a triumph of old and new.

This is matched by outstanding food and service, and all round good value.

The spa was very good too, with the old vaults done out in a roman theme apt for York.

Hudson's Restaurant sells great food for the price, with the Crab cake accompanying my Sea Bass a "historic" in Michael Winner speak, whilst the kipper for breakfast was the best I have had since the demise of GNER on the east coast railway.

Ironically from railway offices we now have a great railway hotel.

Will be back

We stayed in room 326 on 01/06. The room was massive with two beautiful big windows. Bed was big and comfy. It was a lovely stay. Loved the Molton Brown toiletries, quality bed linens and nice selection of tea and coffee in the room. The turn down service was a treat as well. Only criticism was the price of the cocktails (10.95 upwards) and breakfast (£20 each) so we ate and drank elsewhere.

Apologies for this late review but this was due to ill health over the past few months.
My wife and I stayed at this hotel in the latter part of January of this year. Whilst we were booked in
for two nights we only managed to stay the one as we had to return home due to health problems.
That's the bad news. Now for the good news.

On arrival we were made most welcome, the concierge taking care of luggage and reception providing swift and professional registration. We had booked an executive room and this was of a very high quality. Room service was exceptional and could not be faulted. Dinner in the restaurant on the evening of our arrival was very good. The breakfasting in the restaurant the following morning can only be described as magnificent. We had booked afternoon champagne tea which we took via room service. This was also excellent.

Unfortunately, we had to return home early evening due to health problems but the staff could not have been more helpful. The concierge taking us to the station and seeing that our luggage was stowed and that we were seated on the train. We found the service to be absolutely faultless and went well beyond the call of duty. ( many, many belated thanks to Graham).

We will most certainly re-visit the Cedar Court Grand again as it really is one of the outstanding highlights of York.

Room Tip: The whiskey lounge and champagne bar are well worth an encounter. A blast from the past and not to...

I struggled with how many stars to give this hotel. One the one hand, the check in was very good and helpful. We liked our room. The Molton Brown toiletries were nice as was the heated floor in the bathroom. We enjoyed the spa facilities after dinner and were the only ones using them. The bed was extremely comfortable and I had a good nights sleep until . . . the garbage was picked up in the courtyard behind the hotel. I understand that the hotel cannot control the lengthy garbage pick up at 6 am. However, their written materials say that there is no street noise because of the double glazed windows. Our window did not fit correctly and the hotel realized this because it had a shim wedged into the sill. Despite the shim, cold air rushed through the window as did the noise of the garbage pick up. We also were very disappointed with the valet car parking. We used the hotel's valet to park our car because we wanted to be able to leave smoothly the next morning for a long drive. We went to the effort to fill out the form to request that our car be waiting for us out front at a designated time. When we left the hotel after checking out, we were dismayed to discover that other cars were there waiting in the designated area, but ours was not in sight. We were told that the parking attendant would get it. Then, they couldn't find the parking attendant. At some point, someone else decided to retrieve it for us. Needlesstosay, it was not the smooth, easy departure we had wanted. A hotel of this calibre should not make these sorts of errors.

I'll start this review by saying one thing: if this was a 4-star hotel, this would be a 4/5 review.

Here's the thing: To me, 5 star means quality, attention to detail, and service. Three things about the Cedar Court failed in this respect:

1. The spa whirlpool was out of order on my visit. Well, there was a sign saying it was. A member of staff was faffing about with it, but it was still unusable. These things happen, but a 5 star hotel should be actively seeking to make amends to their paying guests. (maybe a "deal" on a treatment, or a free drink at the bar?)

2. Also at the spa, we weren't handed locker keys, nor was it explained to us what the "system" was for storing our robes etc. Upshot was, my partners garments were removed from the locker room and she had to traipse back out to the spa reception in her swimwear to retrieve said items. Worse still, our room keycard was in said robe, could have been a lot worse.

3. We've just received an email demanding payment for items from the minibar for which we paid at checkout. Absolutely shocking, and utterly mean-spirited. Unforgiveable.

The thing is, it was a nice place. The room was nice, the bar was good, the restaurant was decent, if not spectacular.

But, I'm sorry, they can't make errors like these whilst charging the amount they charge. As I said, if they were a 4 star, this would probably be forgivable. Not for a 5.

Think very carefully before staying here.

My wife and I stayed here back in July 2013 for 3 nights for our honeymoon. Been meaning to get round to putting a review on here. Basically from what I remember, the hotel is lovely. In a great location less than 5 minutes from the station, our large room overlooked the roman wall and could see the Minster too. Had afternoon tea upon arrival which was very nice. Didn't have any other meals at the hotel but only because we wanted to go out and explore what the city had to offer. The spa was nice & relaxing, we had pre-booked some massages in advance, then while we were there were given some good discounts on other treatments which we were more than happy to have. The staff there were also really friendly and professional. Nice sun terrace too to have a drink when the sun was out and have a relax away from the bustle of the city. Overall we loved our stay here, loved York and will definitely be back again.
