We stayed the weekend on a stag do in York. The first thing to note is that York is full of stag and hen do's. The twin room was comfortable, the shower is decent but there is no bath. The room has a strange bathroom door separation system so you can lock yourself in the toilet and somebody else can use the shower - which is a great idea, except that the shower and toilet are separated by frosted glass meaning that if you are in the shower you can see the outline of the person using the toilet and visa versa. Probably not too much of an issue for families or couples, but an issue with mates for sure!
I was unfortunately ill for the majority of the trip (not the hotels fault) and the bed was very comfortable given that I spent 20 hours a day in it. Also they have very good blackout curtains which was a real positive. However my real annoyance was that to buy a bottle of Fanta at the bar was £1.95. What a rip off!
The other oddity is that they only have one beer on tap in the bar and that is Staropramen.

I was not a fan of the breakfast, tiny horrible sausages and scrambled egg for a cooked meal. Hardly the hearty English breakfast I as expecting.

However all in all a decent hotel. The staff were friendly and we all enjoyed out stay.

Over the years the Holiday Inn Express brand has gradually improved itself in the face of competition and in response to customer feedback.

The York branch is no exception. The value for money (comapred with a recent stay at a Holiday Inn at twice the price) was exceptional. Friendlier staff, better rooms, good breakfast, and more TV channels to choose from.

Rooms are well maintained and the ensuite is good. Staff were very helpful in keeping a bottle of skimmed milk in the fridge for us to use at breakfast. The choice at this meal was good and the items were constantly topped up, with sides where the food was kept being constantly tidied and cleaned.

Well done! Would consider this one again especially as it is three minutes from the York Park and Ride and is in the right side of York to get to the Coast and the North Yorkshire Moors.

Situated on the near outskirts of York. Comfortably furnished, clean, nicely decorated well proportioned room. (The only criticism was the very short clothes hanging rail of 12" - which was no problem for us but maybe for others.)
The staff went the extra mile and more to make us welcome - nothing was too much trouble.
The buffet style breakfast was comprehensive and delicious.
About a mile distant there is a "Park and Ride" frequent bus service to central York. Navigating and parking in this ancient city could be a problem for drivers. There is so much to see, it's awash with history.
I cannot praise this hotel and staff highly enough, we shall certainly revisit.

We booked with booking.com and arrived not realizing that a 'standard room' was two single beds, not a queen. After a quick move around we got a dbl room on the ground floor and a stern word not to use that website. Depending on why your in york the hotel is fine. It's a standard hotel. No more, no less. We were visiting relatives and had a car so the distance to the city wasnt an issue and there is a park and ride close by which was super handy. The pub (sort of) attached was great. The staff were lovely and the food more than adequate. We'd no doubt stay again when visiting.

Room Tip: I always ask for a higher floor in these hotels -less noise

Positive:
Clean rooms. Friendly staff. Spacious parking in front of hotel. Good to have a pub next to the hotel for late evening beer.
Negative:
Quite a distance from York center, not ideal for sightseeing visit in York. Internet a bit intermittent and sometimes not working at all.

Dear Bubendor,

Thank you for sharing your recent experiences with us. We appreciate all feedback and use it to help improve our existing hotel procedures with the aim to increase guest satisfaction as a whole.

I was delighted to read of your comments relating to our team and the cleanliness of our rooms. The team work hard each day to with the aim of providing a high level of service and I can assure you your kind comments are appreciated on all levels.

With regards our Location; many guests find our location to be great as we are not directly in the Centre and away from all the External noise, and we are only a Bus / Taxi / Park n Ride away from the City Centre. If guests don’t have a car it is not the end of the world; there is a bus route that runs only 10-15 minutes walk away from us. It is a reliable service that runs every 25 minutes during the day and run until around 11pm every day. I will post more information about this service on our Facebook page.

I apologise that you had some difficulties connecting to our WIFI. I know how important WIFI is to guests and will look into this immediately.

Again thank you for providing us with your feedback and we look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

All of the staff we met during our one night stay were very helpful. We had our 2 month old baby and a pram with us and were offered assistance at breakfast time.

There is no lift so if you have a pushchair or mobility issues request a ground floor room.

Breakfast good for what you pay to stay the night. It is what you expect from a holiday inn.

Thank you

we are just back from a 2 night stay here at the holiday inn. its a typical holiday inn, comfortable, clean and the breakfast is pretty good too. the only main complaint we would have is that we were under the impression it was a little closer than it is to York. its perfect if you have a car, however if you do not it will cost you 10 pound taxi fare anytime you want to go to York. we walked 15 minutes to get the local bus, however the bus only comes on average every 40 minutes and it is located in the middle of nowhere. we tried to walk to the park and ride, dont do this as they have diverted it and it took us 30 minutes on a busy road. if we had a car we would definately stay here again but unfortunantely not if we didnt.

Dear Laura C,

Thank you very much for taking the time to provide us with your experiences regarding your recent stay with the Holiday Inn Express York. All feedback received is constructively analysed to help ensure hotel procedures are continually improving with the aim to increase guests overall satisfaction.

I was really pleased to read of your experiences and delighted all amenities met your expectations and suited your needs.

I was unhappy when I read about your concerns relating to our location. On our main website we always clearly state our location and directions to our guests as standard. We are only 2.5 miles away from the City and if guests don’t have a car guests are able to use a reliable bus service which is only 10-15 minutes walk away. Our reception team will be more than happy to direct you or print off a map. On the time tables we have they run every 25- 30 minutes on a weekday apart from Saturday and Sundays where they do vary but are in keeping with other Bus operators. Alternatively we have an agreed rate with a local taxi firm for our guests getting into town of £8 during the day and early evenings.

I will be posting more information regarding bus times on our facebook page.

Again thank you for providing us with your feedback and we sincerely hope you choose to book with us again on your travels.

Kind regards,
Stuart Anderson
