“Very nice and budget to stay!”
Reviewed 18 October 2013

This is my first time stay in hostel. I was in the cheapest 8 persons room for two nights, though there is a little bit noise at night(because of the pub is under the room), but the overall quality is very good! And their kitchen and bathroom are excellent and pretty clean!! Beside, their staff is friendly as well. I'll recommend my friends to stay here.

Please to hear you enjoyed your stay and the Fort's new 8 bed dorms. A lot of people comment about how reasonable the rooms are and seem genuinely surprised at the quality, which is lovely to hear too.
Thank you for taking time to write us a review and recommend us to your friends.

Stayed here for two nights in September. Was very impressed with this hostel! Every bed had powerplugs and a lamp, which was actually rare for hostels in the UK! Some cooking ingredients were free, and they even provided hot chocolate! That pretty much won my heart. But the icing on the cake was the washing machine and dryer, which was free of charge!!

Common room was nice and cosy, they could do with more chairs though. The only downside for this place was that under the bed was very dusty. But really, who cares right? I doubt anyone will spend much time there!

Very very nice hostel! I stayed in the cheapest room but the quality is so good! It has private kitchen and bathroom is magnificent! It is spacious and stylish and the common room even get shower! Even you have checked out, you can still access the common facilities provided by the hostel, including fully equipped kitchen, shower, tv and the internet! it is ideal if you need to kill time before heading off to the next stop. The staff is extremely friendly and lovely! Absolutely fantastic hostel, will definitely come back if I visit York again!

I was really nervous to stay in a hostel for the first time but this place was great. Much better than the hostels to follow on my trip. The staff were friendly, the hostel was very clean and well maintained. They provide you with small lockers to store your valuable stuff, no need to bring a lock. It is in a great location, in the heart of the city and the area seems very safe. The Bathrooms are really nice and clean, they are large private wet rooms than make it easy to shower, dress and get ready in the room.... much like you would have at home. The only complaint i would have about this place is that the mattresses are not very comfortable. it was like sleeping on the metal springs themselves. I just slept on top of the comforter they gave me.
I stayed in many hostels on the 3 week trip accross the UK and this, by far, was the cleanest and nicest.

Other than that, I would absolutely recommend this place to fellow travelers.

Room Tip: you meet more people if you say in the larger rooms. I suggest room 27

Lovely that your first stay in a hostel was with us and really happy that you enjoyed it so much. We get great feedback about or wet rooms and the dorms, they have gone down so well we really couldn't be happier.
Thank you for letting us know your thoughts and I will look into the mattress as they are all brand new this year so you shouldn't of had any issues with it.

Location is so central. We stayed in the 8 bed dorm room which was clean and pleasant. Wet rooms were good with warm, powerful showers. Nice communal area with free tea/coffee/squash.

We also made the most of the 20% reduction for the restaurant, Kennedys, next door which was a great little addition! I'd highly recommend.

Cool, hip and sexy. This place rocks and puts the other hostels to shame. Great rooms (we stayed in a private double) with attached kitchen, shower and toilet. Beautifully appointed. Matthew , our host was fantastic...Kennedy's the Bar and Restaurant attached (and part of) was amazing. GREAT food, reasonably priced even without the 20 % discount renters get. It was gourmet quality at pub grub prices. Live band Funktion kept us up dancing Sunday night with reasonably priced drinks.

Room Tip: Don't know how the dorms are...book a double if you can.

The Fort was beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. We were met with a warm welcome and shown to our as advertised rooms. Full kitchen facilities, laundry and lounge space. The Fort couldn't be more centrally located in York with access to everything. Kennedy's bar next door had delicious (albeit a bit pricey) food. Only room for improvements: lounge space could use more comfortable seating and wifi although great in common rooms didn't stretch to bedrooms.
