From arrival to departure the Grange more than lived up to our expectations. Our ruby coloured four poster room was perfect for the occassion, with all the little extras that a four star hotel provides. As we had booked a "Romantic Getaway" weekend, the champagne and chocolates were expected, but the addition of an anniversary card from the staff to accompany them was a true delight. As was the surprise dessert which arrived at our table on the night of our anniversary, completely unannounced!

It is these small touches which make a stay memorable, as was the overall ambience of the hotel, which retained its' aura of old world tradition, whilst providing every modern amenity.

To anyone planning a weekend break in the city of York, I say look no further than The Grange Hotel. To the staff and management, thank you for making what was a milestone event in our lives, even more memorable.

Philip & Patricia Heatley

Room Tip: Choose a room above the ground floor. It gives that feeling of making an entrance when coming down to dinner. Also, the bathroom in our four poster room was very spacious.

Our room was very comfortable and certainly had all the amenities we required. However, we were more than disappointed with the staff, from the front desk reception, the staff in the dining areas and with the porter on our departure. There was no front desk greeting upon our arrival and when we asked for directions not only were we given wrong information but it really was obvious that the reception staff had no idea where the basic York tourist attractions are.

We booked for dinner in The Ivy only to be told that they were booked out but they might be able to squeeze us in. At the appointed hour we were shown to a table jammed into a corner – certainly not a pleasant spot. The restaurant was almost empty. During the next 2 hours while we ate dinner, no other diners came in to the restaurant. The same scenario happened the following night when we decided to dine at The Grill downstairs. Our table again was not the best as we were told that the restaurant was booked out and we had to be there by 7pm to secure any table. When we arrived the restaurant was empty. Again during the next 2 hours, few other diners came in.

This treatment of hotel guests dining in this hotel surely ranks with some of the most inhospitable we have experienced for a 4 star hotel (we wondered when the 4 stars were awarded) – if you cannot look after your own guests, then you have very little to offer in the way of service.

You shouldn't prejudge the worth or value of something by its outward appearance alone. That was the mistake we made when booking a room in the Grange Hotel.

We have stayed in hotels all over the world, some rooms have been minimalist - a bed, a wardrobe and shared washing facilities, others have been the height of luxury. Some good, some bad, but normally you get what you pay for.

Unfortunately the same cannot be said about our experience at The Grange, which quite frankly is the worst value for money hotel we have ever stayed in.

From the outside this classic Grade II listed property ouses charm and sophistication, but inside lurks dark secrets, and it certainly isn't the hotel they promote on the website as an - ' award winning boutique hotel, renowned for its relaxed and stylish ambiance, luxury accommodation and first-class friendly service.'

Maybe a dark secret is a bit over the top, it does not harbour a werewolf or a secret underground government human testing base! It does however harbour at least one room, the room we stayed in, which quite frankly is not suitable for habitation.

Why? I hear you cry. Well, let me list the reasons:

1) The room is the size of a shoe box

2) The room has very little natural light

3) The view out of the window is of another window and a wall

4) The wallpaper was ripped in places and covered in mould in other places, notably above the bed!

5) All of the furnishings were worn, carpets were frayed

6) The bathroom was disgusting, with mildew and mould on the walls and around the skylight

7) One of the bath robes was covered in make-up

We have pictures of all of the above, we haven't posted them, but if you want to see them, please email.

The room was advertised as a standard King/Twin full on-suite, looking at their website the current charge is £168 per night - so one would expect as advertised 'luxury accommodation' or at least a room that was habitable..don't you think?!

We did of course complain, we showed the evidence to the GM, in the surroundings it felt like an episode from Poirot or Miss Marple, the only difference was that this was real and a serious complaint.

However, we felt quite quickly that we hit a brick wall with the GM. He didnt show suprise or shock, and rather than dealing with it in a pragmatic way when presented with clear evidence, he became defensive and seemed to take our complaint as a personal slight against him. We wont say anymore, but suffice to say, it was not a very nice experience.

Of course seeing the evidence first hand, it should have resulted in a full refund, it didn't, we were given a small refund so we wont go back again. Never mind, you only have to look around in York to see there are plenty of other great hotels to stay in, we know that this is not representative of what York has to offer.

York is a wonderful place to stay, it's a beautiful city that quite rightly comes top of the poles as the most desirable place to live or visit, so don't let our review put you off this exciting and vibrant historic city.

Dear Guest

I have been waiting to read your review with anticipation for some time now.

When we fall short on any of the services we provide we will endeavour if given the opportunity to rectify them immediately.

As you stated when you brought the issues to my attention being a travel reporter I wonder what your review would have contained if I agreed to give you the bedroom complimentary in return for a review (whatever that might have been). It sadness me to read that you failed to state the discount I was prepared to give you and as I did not agree with your demands you stated that you will be placing an unfavourable review. If anyone wishes to discuss this review personally please contact me and will disclose the conversation that took place with the reviewer.

Yours

Once again, we relied upon Karen Brown's Guides to help us select our hotel on a first visit to York. Following nearly a week of touring the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors, we landed in York and found The Grange on the first try. Just a three minute walk from Bootham Bar, and it's easy to be right at the Minster and other fabulous York attractions. On arrival, we were swiftly checked into one of the new rooms and told, "the good news is that this room has air conditioning!" A winding route through the original building to a newer addtion found us in our four-poster room, with easy access to the free parking behind the hotel. Glad to have the air conditioning and amenities of this newer room, it was a little disappointing to be in modern decor amidst the otherwise lovely Georgian townhouse surroundings. Its a matter of taste, but the room could have been any Sheraton or Hilton, and lacked the character we had hoped for. Breakfast was excellent, and I enjoyed "Doreen's black pudding," with the full Yorkshire breakfast both days. Overall, we enjoyed the stay, including the warm welcome and luggage assistance on arrival, and the location was quiet while still very close to the city center. Will definitely want to return to York, and would likely come back here as well.

Room Tip: Ask about being in the new addition or main original house; apparently the newer rooms have AC, though more modern in decor.

We stayed for 2 nights, the hotel room was lovely, clean and quiet. We did not dine in the hotel as we felt that the service in the dining room fell short of the personal touch. Seemed that some of the staff were quite new and were being trained by another that did not know the ropes either. We understand that everyone has to learn the job, but for the class of hotel felt this should have been done more thoroughly before being let loose on the guests. At breakfast both days, we had things forgotten - (no milk for the drinks), (cereal dishes left on the table). One final point, the size of the menus was totally unnecessary, far too big. However, the reception staff were very friendly and very professional and helpful. We did enjoy our stay as it was for a special occassion and would recommend it to friends.

Dear Guest

Thank you for taking the time to place your review on Tripadvisor.

I am very pleased to learn of your enjoyable stay at The Grange. I am also pleased to learn that you found the bedroom lovely and clean.

I am rather mystified with your statement regarding the level of service in the restaurant as you did not dine. I would have loved the opportunity to demonstrate the level of service we normally provide and renown for in either of our two restaurants. Rest assured that the majority of the staff has been employed for a considerable amount of time and from time to time we carry out further “on job training” I do apologise if the training being carried out at the time of your visit was not discreet as it should have been.

I hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you again in the not too distant future

Regards

George Briffa
