Just got back from spending our first Christmas at the Grange and hopefully it will not be our last.A beautiful hotel with lovely comfortable rooms a very stylish restaurant serving delicious food, friendly, efficient staff and only a short walk from the Minster. There were lots of little extra touches from champagne and canapes before dinner, chocolates and fruit in the room and a visit from the owner to welcome us and to ensure that we were all enjoying ourselves. There was a visit from a choir who sang carols by a magnificent christmas tree on Christmas Eve and a real fire and fairy lights. On Boxing day, there was an optional excursion to the Herriot museum in Thirsk, before which we were treated to a superb lunch at the Crab and Lobster in Asenby. A magical Christmas and excellent value.

Room Tip: our room overlooked the car park, which was handy for ferrying luggage back and forth and there was...

Friendly staff, even though weather was lousy they made stay pleasant. Rooms was individually designed, nice toiletries and a generally pleasant one night stay. The hotel was close to city centre and there was plenty to do in one day. Wifi was free and that is always a bonus nowadays.

I attended the Grange for business recently and had a great stay - beautiful surroundings, gorgeous meal and lovely atmosphere. However, it was the kind and caring attitude of the staff that stood out. Unfortunately having left the hotel I had a fall outside, my own fault entirely, but the hotel could not have been kinder or more caring. Their genuine concern, swift action and the thoughtful care they provided made me so incrediably grateful. It makes such a difference to encounter such kindness, especially under such difficult circumstances. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

Some colleagues and I have an annual overnight business meeting at The Grange every December, and have been doing so for a number of years. Still works for me!
York is a great and atmospheric location - particularly at Christmas. The Grange is a lovely, charming period hotel. I notice it is linked with The George at Hathersage and The Cavendish at Baslow. They do have clear similarities.
Still as comfortable and welcoming, though I did notice that the Christmas tree that towers through the spiral staircase was a floor shorter this year - though it never ceased to amaze me how they got it in anyway.
Food is fine, breakfasts great. Someone earlier was complaining that the Breakfasts were too small..............how much do you eat!?
For Business it is fantastic, you can hire the Library and adjoining Drawing room, which works really well and they will serve you a private dinner in the Library.
I keep promising to go back one December with my wife, as it would also make a very romantic location.
Not cheap, but overall I would highly recommend.

Its with a heavy heart I write this review, i am not one for negative comments unless truly deserved.

Stayed here before on several ocassions , but this time we were not impressed.

The house keeping is super as always , but the dinner / breakfast service is fawlty towers.

We thought we were just unlucky . but overhearing other guests complaining , it appeared to be the norm.

Were entered the lounge bar for pre dinner drinks ( very expensive by any standard drinks ), before we managed to get a sip out of our drinks we were informed the bar was closed at 7pm . So we had to go to the downstairs New York Grill ( you would expect an American stye menu , but not to be found in this New york grill) .

We were presented with 2 menus to select our meals from. So we selected meals only for the waiter to return to advise that they had sold out of some of our selections. So he asked us to pick again , but this time we were presented with a different set of menus with different combinations !

So we were now fully confused as to what was being offered and what we were getting so was the waiter, the calamity / confusion just continued all the way to the bill payment as to what we were being charged for.

Night number 2 ; we were advised that we had to eat upstairs in the ivy restaraunt as the had a private party in the New York grill.
They advised that we could select anything from the downstairs menu if we wished.
But once again confusion reigned supreme , 3 different menus different combinations , different 2 course / 3 course offers. A total mess ! Different desert menu from the one we had originally selected from. We were advised deserts were included and then we wre charged for them etc etc !

The quality of the steaked served up was like a tough old boot ! It was rubbish , but the mushroom sauce was very nice . It made no sense.

In all our stays at the hotel this is certainly not what we expected or payed for.

Our Breakfast was nice , but other guests were complaining and sending theirs back. Items missing / wrong orders / cold food

What has changed from last year ??? Or the year before ??

I really hope this hotel can regain its previous great service , but as it stands we will be booking elsewhere for future trips .

We booked The Grange for Sue's birthday on a celebration package, the room was very comfortable and clean, all the staff were excellent. The bar was a little crowded on the first night due to a wedding, but we had been warned.we had to send the food back on the Saturday night as it was only tepid, but this was sorted.Just a hickup on our lovley stay.
York is a magical place to Christmas Shop see you all again next year.

So far our favourite York hotel, have stayed a few times and have always been happy with our rooms and the welcome. Comfortable and warm ( very necessary this last weekend) breakfast was excellent, lunch a bit bland but in the grill not the main restaurant, will definitely return.
Walking distance from the centre of town so good for both shopping and sightseeing.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are quieter, no lift so stairs could be challenging if at the top of the hotel.
