“Since when were the suburbs the city centre?”
Reviewed 11 December 2013

This is a lovely hotel but the website blares the fact that it is a city centre boutique hotel. It isn't city centre; it's in a suburb called Clifton. The city centre is one and a half miles away. Not far, I agree, in the scale of things, but I intended on my mid-evening arrival to stroll around the city centre sites by simply walking out of the hotel's front door. Well, there is nothing outside the front door except a busy road heading even further out of town. I hate it when hotels exaggerate but when they lie so totally - aaagh.

Room Tip: If you want a city centre hotel in York, go somewhere else. Somewhere that is actually IN the city...

Winter break in York for two nights in November. Regency style luxury, extremely helpful and professional staff. Breakfast was one of the best I have had, a huge choice in an interesting dining room, with very attentive staff. Lovely log fire to settle around in the evening. Will be back.

Room Tip: We had a room on the main road (not my normal preference, but was not aware of the traffic.

I stayed for 3 days in October with two eight year olds to visit York during half term.

The hotel is beautiful and very comfortable, and the staff are extremely helpful. They arranged two adjoining rooms for our visit which was perfect for us, much better than all trying to cram into a family room as we've dome at other hotels. The staff were also very helpful and knowledgeable about local attractions and how best to get there. Food was very good at breakfast, and it's easy to walk from the hotel into the centre of York and all the great things to see and do in the city.

I've just spent a night at this hotel on an weekend away with a friend and we had a great time. The room (no. 16 set up as a twin) wasn't huge but very comfortable with everything we could need, including fresh milk in the fridge for tea. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. We didn't have dinner there because we wanted to explore York by night but we had a wonderful breakfast. I wanted something that wasn't on the menu and the staff and chef were amazing and got me exactly what I wanted. It's a 10 minute pleasant walk into the city centre. Altogether a lovely place and I would definitely stay there again.

This will be our 5th stay here at the Grange and its character, charm and friendly staff never disappoint. The food is excellent, the atmosphere is second to none, the rooms are all beautiful and it is a quick 5 min walk into the centre of town. Don't waste time on other hotels and B & B The Grange is the place to stay.

Room Tip: I have stayed in the four poster rooms, delux rooms and standard rooms, all have been quiet, clean a...

Over recent years my wife and I have stayed at the Grange on several occasions, including Christmas. Also,I have used the hotel frequently when on business, and other hotels on occasions.
Pluses include venue being a convenient walk to all of what York has to offer; reception always very welcoming; rooms & breakfast excellent; public facilities and overall ambience totally in keeping with an old city hotel.
My only criticism is that multi-night, and dinner inclusive, deals are rather 'stingy' but in York you are spoilt for choice re the latter. Otherwise highly recommended.
