“Nice old fashioned hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 March 2007

This is a nice, traditional (if rather old fashioned) English hotel. Location is good, about five minutes walk from the Minster. The rooms are big and clean, with all the usual facilities. Bed was comfortable. Staff friendly and helpful. Breakfast is very nice. There's a lounge area and a bar. Would probably suit older travellers very well as has quite a nostalgic air, but was also reasonably child friendly. Teenagers may not be so appreciative of the oil paintings and regency atmosphere. There's also nothing for young people to do at the hotel (no gym/pool/games rooms etc.).

Only downside was the plumbing, which was noisy and not terribly reliable, and the heating, which had two settings - too hot, and too cold. The windows were also rather rattly and draughty, though I was staying during exceptionally high winds so this may not be such a problem normally.

This is my idea of a nice hotel.
Not sure if the previous reviewer was in the same Grange hotel in York that my wife and I stayed in. It was my birthday so we had 3 nights in February.
Rooms where very nice, and included safety deposit box , mini bar., bath robes, porterage from car park to rooms.
They turn down your beds in the evening and restock your tea and coffee . Just ring reception and they supply fresh milk for the tea and coffee in the room. We had a king size room. ( See pictures.)
Hotel is well kept and oldie worldy. Decor is nice. See pictures of lounge with proper fire place.
We had good breakfast, staff were all very friendly and we willl use this hotel again.

If you're going to spend this much money on a hotel in or around York, I suggest that you take the plunge and either a) go to Middleton Hall for a few pounds a night more and get a lot, lot more for your money or b) go to the Abbey Inn at Byland, to the North of York where you'll pay a lot less for much nicer surroundings.
Whilst it was attractively (ish) decorated and relatively clean, the bedlinen and bath towels smelt of cigarette smoke and the noise from the party on one of the lower floors kept us awake until the small hours.
Breakfast was served the next morning in stylish surroundings, but it really wasn't very impressive - one very small, undercooked sausage, some rather limp bacon and a very, very nice egg, coffee barely adequate - should have gone to Starbucks in town. The overall impression wasn't helped by the fact that practically every table was complaining about something.
I would not recommend this hotel, and will not hurry back there - I expected something really special and got something really average. As time goes on, I feel more and more ripped off.

We have just returned from a one night stay at The Grange and we were very impressed by our experience. The location is a perfect ten minute walk to the minster and many interesting avenues of shops. The hotel room was beautifully decorated and the bathroom was spotless.Like other reviewers we agree a room on the back of the hotel provides a much quieter experience as the road is fairly busy. We ate in The Ivy Brasserie which was very good but like others found the service a little hit and miss. Breakfast was hearty and a good choice was offered. All staff were very pleasant and we had no problems at all. We would definately return in the future and would reccommend to anyone.

A short review to say that I endorse the other 'excellent' reviews of The Grange.

We have just returned from a two night stay including New Year's Eve.

The reception staff were delightful including the porter who was helpful in pointing out the umbrella's made available in the bedroom to cope with the downpour outside!

The bedroom was 'cosy' with only wardrobe space and some shelving to the side but adequate for the two night stay. The bed and bed linen were to die for!

On New Year's Eve our party of four were seated on a table for 14 - this was fine by us and we enjoyed the company of some new acquaintancies. However, we were not notified before hand and I think that some guests were not as comfortable with this arrangement as we were. The meal was delicious - some felt that the pace of service was too slow.

A 10 minute walk saw you in the centre of York so good for sightseeing and the shops.

All in all I would go back when in need of a nice weekend break.

This hotel has greatly improved since our last visit this time last year. The staff are very helpful and friendly. We entertained some friends in the Brasserie downstairs and received excellent service, the food is of a high standard and the menu can be viewed on the hotels website. Make sure you have some Brasserie Chips, they are the best you have ever tasted. One portion is ample to share.

Our room was cosy, the linen quality and comfort of the bed worthy of a five star and the bathroom very clean and stylish with a nice powerful shower. There is also an evening turn down service.

Breakfast is served in the restaurant, top marks for fresh coffee, hot toast and homemade jam and marmalade.

The hotel is beautifully situated for a walk into York. Dont worry if the hotel car park looks full, just leave your keys with reception and they will double park it for you. This hotel is situated on a busy road, ask for a room at the back if you don't like road noise.
