Dean Court Hotel, BW Premier Collection

Certificate of Excellence

By far the best location you can choose - a few steps from York Minster allows you the joy of seeing this amazing building at day or illuminated at night without leaving the hotel (if you want to be that lazy!)
The standards were very good - but the staff were the best.
The restaurant service was personal and efficient the smiles were genuine! - the chef excellent!
For a near faultless hotel in the best of locations - look no further
We really recommend this hotel and the team

Room Tip: Go for room 15 - its a small suite - wonderful

We've stayed at this hotel before and thought it to be just the best location in York. This time, we stayed at the weekend for a mix of shopping and leisure and confirmed our previous opinion.
The hotel is immediately next to the Minster at the north end of the Shambles (Old Town). Just about everywhere is an easy walk from here and the joy of valet parking (£12.50/day) makes it even better.(Parking in York can be a nightmare)
We'd booked a small double but ended up in a larger room overlooking the gardens adjacent to the Minster. The room had everything you'd need but perhaps could stand some refurbishment. Not bad but some fittings a bit rickety.
On the plus side, plenty of coffee and drinks in the room (no mini-bar) and free wi-fi. Breakfast is a must and despite some non-local staff, this hotel still retains a very English and Yorkshire feel. The bar and lobby areas are surprisingly popular with guests and locals which makes for a good atmosphere (but not noisy).
We normally eat out in the town but based on the quality of the breakfast, we would dine in the hotel restaurant with confidence in the evening on another occasion.
Overall - it's not corporate perfection but it is a very endearing and friendly place to stay. As I mentioned earlier - there's no better location either. Give it a try (unfortunately they do have some two night minimum rules Friday/Saturday but otherwise fine)

The fixtures and fittings in this hotel are well up to the Best Western standard, but what really makes the difference is the staff. Everybody we came into contact with was cheerful, helpful and positive. All the food we ate was of good quality and very well presented. When booking our table for dinner we were asked about any food allergies and when it was mentioned that my wife is diabetic, a special dessert was prepared for her.
The only downside for us was that the room was very warm though they had allowed for that by providing a fan in the room.

Lovely old hotel in a superb position. Friendly helpful staff, large comfortable rooms. We had the four poster right on the corner facing the Minster. Restaurant a little dated in presentation rather to much of the old 'Nouvelle cuisine' about it but well cooked and flavoursome. Excellent breakfast menu. Valet parking not needed if disabled, one could park outside all day if required but no-one men tioned it.

Stayed twice at Dean Court years and years ago when it was a venerable old place with huge deep baths which I can never resist, despite years of the convenience of showers. Of course it is spectacularly situated and now it is updated - for the better. We decided to have a single overnight stay after completing some business and as it was Sunday night, there was a deal to include dinner. Car was taken away and parked, our room was really large and comfortable with a nice view from opening sash windows of autumn trees, rooftops and the back of St Wilfred's Church - also quite a few crates far below but no real issue with that.( It happened to be the bottle bank but at least staff did not start all that up till 20 to 9 next morning.) I would take this room again - 55 - it was at the end of the corridor so no-one passing by. Bathroom was large, warm, well provisioned. After waiting probably just a little too long in the bar ( we did change the time twice ourselves, to be fair ), we were taken into the attractive dining room, to a lovely table, where we were shown an interesting menu. The food was excellent, really. I'm always hopeless at remembering what I have eaten but my starter was a proper nicoise salad with a terrine of smoked trout. My main course was two cuts of pork, fillet and belly. We shared a dessert of poached pear with honeycomb ice cream. Coffee was hot and good. Managed to force down the petit fours. Delicious. The room was lively, busy and with some background music at just the right volume - ie, pretty low but present. I did not find the room cold as another reviewer did but it is large with high ceilings. Staff were really pleasant from front desk, porter, waiting staff, bar. Breakfast was excellent - we had a great view of the Minster on a beautiful golden autumn morning. Service was smart and efficient, friendly. My scrambled eggs with herbs were amongst the best I have ever had. Local sausage was good too. Maybe not piping hot but fine. The size of the room and the kitchen distance might be an issue ? On menu was porridge, kedgeree, smoked Whitby haddock, Eggs Benedict and other goodies.Car was brought back round to the entrance, everything was most satisfactory. The bedroom was HOT through the night - I think the duvets might be goosedown and we like something lighter, being hotblooded ! (!Joke !) The bed was very comfortable though. Only one negative - the lift is, honestly, like a single wardrobe in size. There is another lift but I think that takes guests to another section of the hotel. It might be more substantial.

Room Tip: Please see above.

I have stayed here three times over a matter of year and really like the hotel. Its next to the Minster and you normally get a room overlooking it. The hotel is well decorated and in good condition. The staff are helpful and nothing is to small detail. The rooms are not the largest but not too small.
The restuarant is fabulous and I eat there every time I visit for at least one evening.
Breakfast is all yu could ever want
I look forward to a return trip close to Chrstmas.
If you visit York you can find cheaper but you won't find a more central loaction.

I stayed at the Dean Court while on business in September 2011. It is in a very old brick building across the street from a lovely park and kitt-corner to the historice York Minster. The York train station is a 20 minute walk or a two minute cab ride away. The hotel exterior is lovingly decorated with a riot of gorgeous flower baskets and the interior is totally renovated with all the modern conveniences. The Dean Court simply oozes charm and the staff are exceptionally polite and helpful. Next time I am in York, I will bring my wife. We will defintely stay at the Dean Court because it will bring out the best in her (wink wink).
