“family gathering at Novotel YORK”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 January 2014

We held a family get together over two days ,27th and 28th December. The hotel was very suitable for this event especially as we had children in our party. We thought the staff were excellent especially in reception, at the bar and in the dining room .Our one disappointment was in the quality of the food offered as a main course at the evening buffet-it was poor.

My wife and stayed here on the 2nd/3rd January 2014 for an early new year get away. When checking in noticed that there were a lot of families with young children checking in as well. Obviously visiting York for its attractions to entertain the children before returning to school.

The car park charge of £10 per night is a lot considering it is only used by hotel guests.

the bed room had recently been re- decorated but there was an item missing above the curtain rail.

Our early morning was disturbed by children in the room above running around at early hours.

A tip for future visitors do not stay out of term time unless going as a family.

Room Tip: rooms overlooking the river but request when booking

Good morning and many thanks for your comments. It is tue that the hotel can get very busy with children during school holidays. I would like to apologise for the fact that the pelmet was missing in your room. It was removed in preparation of works starting soon as we are going to change all of the windows at the hotel. I would also like to take this opportunity to send you all our best wishes for the New Year and we are all hoping to have the pleasure of welcoming you back to the hotel.

With kind regards,

Not very impressed with this hotel. Some of individually packed cheese(s) at breakfast said nearly a week out of their best before dates(noticed after eating them-we felt uncomfortable) The breakfast time the reception told us was an hour earlier and we ended up waiting with our small kids-when a receptionist noticed that we were misinformed, they were not especially apologetic. Even some basic requests we made at reception, (even though they said they would do them), they were not met. We wrote to the hotel), but there is no reply so far. Very slow service and not thorough nor professional. Disappointing. Would like to see more professional service at this hotel, as I would like to stay at family friendly hotels, which this hotel group is meant to be.

Good morning and thank you very much for your review. I am obviously very disappointed to read your comments and will certainly investigate your concerns straight away. Please rest assured it is not a true reflection of our usual high standards. You have mentioned you wrote to the hotel but I do not seem to have any record. Could you please contact me on Christophe.Ughetto@accor.com and I will personally deal with your complaint.

Thank you.

Stayed here over New Year 2013/14 and first impressions were good. It was easy to find, good sized car park (charged at £10 per night) and the reception is very modern (lots of children running around using the playstaions etc). Warm welcome but disappointed by the room.

The sofa bed had been made up into 2 singles, these were not needed so had to re-collapse them in order to get more space as it would have been very tight with them left out. There was rubbish under the beds and the sofa was all ripped; the decor was worn in places.
The toilet was separate from the bathroom through a second door but it did smell a bit - needed a more thorough toilet cleaner or bleach to be used. We did consider asking to be moved but after spraying a good deal of deodorant and perfume it was okish. The bathroom was very modern and to be honest it was fab with a choice of shower heads - normal and rain (overhead) shower although the water pressue could do with being a bit better as it sometimes felt like a light drizzle. Didn't try the breakfast (seemed a bit expensive especially when there are lots of other places in York that do good food).
My partner went into the swiiming pool and said it was good, but a bit small.

Overall the hotel was ok - good location (just a 10 min walk to the centre) but would stay at the Hilton next time (we did try and book it but it was fully booked).
The Novotel is not what you expect from a 4 star and for what you get it's expensive.

Good afternoon and many thanks for your comments. I am slightly disappointed to read your concerns and we are continuously developing our product. I would like to apologise with regards to the beds being out due to an issue we do experience with one of our distributors (website you used to make your booking). Please rest assured we are doing our utmost and working closely to this company to get the matter resolved. I however hope we will have the opportunity to welcome you back at some point to the hotel.

With kind regards,

Christophe Ughetto

Stayed at this hotel for 2 nights over the New year's period. A party of 4 including a 10 year old and a baby. We stayed in A family room which was a bit short of space but comfortable. The hotel is in an excellent location for all the attractions york has to offer and is family orientated with a small pool and games consoles in the bar area for children . The staff are very friendly especially in the restaurant/bar area. The only downside was the set menu for new years eve which was very limited. Perhaps next year a Buffett running alongside the set menu would see more people using the restaurant. All in all would use this hotel again and would recommend to families and couples alike

We booked this hotel as we wanted a hotel in York with a swimming pool and at a relatively good price. We paid just over £300 for 3 nights for a family of 4 (B&B) which we thought was decent value at that time of year. When we arrived we were shown to the room which was a bit small for 4 of us - the children had the sofa bed which basically took up most of the floor space of the double room so it was a bit cramped with all our luggage (also barely any storage space for clothes, etc). It was a modern room and bathroom but the toilet was separate and it was like something out of the 80s with woodchip on the walls and a very old loo! We think they were in the middle of modernising and hadn't got round to doing the loos yet as the family we were with had the same toilet issue!! In the end it was just a loo so it didn't detract from our stay.
The hotel is very family friendly in that they have a Wii console set up in the lobby so there are always families around and children interacting with each other, there is also a small alcove with toddler toys for the younger ones. Our children loved the Wii and would play on it on the way back from days out and after breakfast if we were still eating. The breakfasts were good and set us up for the day (plenty of choice). We also ate in one evening as the children were too tired to go out again. We chose the buffet which shut very early as they had to set up for breakfast - it was cheap though at £50 for a family of 4 and again, there was enough food for everyone to eat.
The location is good - about 10 minutes walk into the centre of York and around 15-20 minutes to the Minster. We didn't use the car the whole time we were there.
The pool is tiny, so the adults in our party didn't use it, but the children did and it was fine for a half-hour splash about. There's no loo in the pool area and limited changing so best to do all that in your room and come down in tracksuit bottoms and a t-shirt.
All in all I thought it really suited our needs, but if you are looking for a quiet, couple-orientated hotel then maybe it isn't the place for you.
