“Basic hotel, but done to high standard”
Reviewed 5 September 2009

We stayed at this hotel for two nights, on a dinner bed and breakfast basis, with our daughter (aged 5) in a normal room, consisting of a queen sized bed and sofa bed; the room was clean and equipped with all the essentials and there was a stylish shower room. The room was cramped with the sofa bed out - fortunately we didn't need to spend much time in our room (other than sleeping). The room was clean when we first arrived.

The hotel has a small swimming pool. There are a couple of changing cubicles in the swimming pool area to change in and you leave your stuff on the side (it is no like other hotels with separate changing areas and lockers) and there are no staff to supervise. The standard of cleaning in the pool area was poor (for example an old plaster on the side of the pool for two days). It also got quite crowded as it is a small pool.

The hotel is very conveniently located just outside the city walls and only a very short walk into the city centre; no need to use our car. There is a small (but nominal) charge for the car park (£5).

The staff were very friendly and polite.

The food (especially the dinner) were excellent and there is also a children's menu. The only complaint is that they struggled to cope with the number of people at breakfast so you had to wait for tables to be cleared an reset and for certain items to be replenished at the buffet.

We did not pay full price for the hotel and we were happy with the value we got on our DBB deal. We would not recommend paying full price though.

The hotel does nothing fancy. But what is does do it does to a high standard.

Good enough for a short break. close to all amenities. Pricey unless you can get one of the deals regularly on offer. Clean rooms, but a bit shabby (carpets mainly).Staff friendly and helpful. Pool ok at off peak times. Otherwise too busy. Breakfast far too expensive @£15. Wetherspoons across the road does the full monty for £3.99. Main downside is the noise very early in the mornings(doors banging, kids shouting etc). Also terrace outside doesn't have great views.

As we were travelling with 2 teenagers and a 5 year old the idea of a pool swung us in favour of this hotel. In the photos it looked like a decent size so we were very disappointed to find it was so small. It was also extremely packed but as we had promised our 5 year old we had no choice but to squeeze in amongst all the other parents. Despite only staying in for 5 minutes my eyes were stinging from the chlorine hours later.
The games consoles in the reception area also sounded like a good idea on paper. The reality is that they caused arguments between all the kids staying at the hotel wanting to have a go, and arguments with parents trying to drag their kids off them (including us!).
I must compliment the staff who were all competent and attentive. We tolerated the 40 deep queue for breakfast seating as they were obviously doing their best. Perhaps this was a one off due to it being peak holiday season? Once seated we found the breakfast items to be plentiful and of good quality (buffet style).
The brochure shows a riverside terrace area. Yes there is a terrace but it's more like sitting next to the canal with some kind uf pumping station on the opposite bank. You wouldn't want to spend an evening there.
We stayed in a family room which was just about big enough for 2 adults and 2 kids. Though functional I can only describe it as average. It's plus point was that the toilet was a seperate room from the main bathroom.
The hotel location was ok with town a pleasant stroll away, do-able with small kids.
Not a bad hotel but I'll try elsewhere next time as you pay a premium for the pool and along with the game consoles they tainted the overall experience.

we stayed over the weekend of the 22nd august, we arrived at 10am as we wanted to spend a full day in york,
i was aware that check in was 2pm but i went in to say i was leaving my car in the car park, after a quick check i was told that there was a superior room available nowe and for £10 more we could have it there and then and check in, which we did.
all was well until we reached the room which hadnt been cleaned it still had the previous persons rubbish on the sides and the bed hadnt been changed / made ect.
we went back to reception who applogised and were told by house keeping that it had been done, we were then offered the choice of waiting for the room that we had booked or a free upgrade to the room we had been offered, we took the free upgrade and left our case in the room,
apart from the above which didnt spoil our stay as it was partly our fault for arriving early every thing else about the hotel was great, the location is perfect and if as we did you get a river view it makes an ideal location to enjoy york.
theres a nice area at the back where you can sit out with a drink overlooking the river and the breakfast was nice with a good choice of food.
all in all we would stay at this place again

This hotel is about a 5/10 minute walk from york city centre.

Arrived to be told there is a £5 parking charge. I despise all hotels which residents to park. However it is charged per 24 hours and is a lot more cheaper than some York city centre car parks for that time period.

The hotel reception is fab with Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii which residents can use, ,my room was what I would call satisfacory, nothing special, but it could do with a lick of paint. What did annoy me was that kids were allowed in the pool past 9pm which is not what I wanted after a long drive to this hotel.

The mini bar was well stocked, with the usual mini bar prices!

Breakfast was a mixture of everything, continental, full english you name it, and belgian waffles, which were rather nice.

Overall a satisfactory hotel, but pity about the pool, oh and the hoel has no gym facilities, and no air conditiong when I stayed

Stayed for 2 nights while visiting York in July. Hotel very impressive with ample parking. we had a family room which was spacious enough and overlooked the river. Had an inner door as well as main door which was brilliant from stopping noise coming through from main hall. Did not get disturbed by noise at all. Kids loved the pool but was disappointed there was no showers / jacuzzi / sauna or steam room, just a pool! Bar area was very spacious and had a wii & xbox for kids to play with.
Breakfast very good with ample selection ( I am vegetarian). had to queue our 1st morning but no problem the 2nd.
Would definately stay here again :)

We have just returned from a 3 night stay in the Novotel, York and had a great few days.

All the staff were very friendly and helpful - nothing was a problem for them.
We had booked a standard room at a great price and had opted for room only - we were really lucky and were upgraded to a superior room at check in! The room was slightly smaller than that of Travel Inns however the rooms are to a higher specification in the Novotel. The TV channel selection was great from our son's point of view (childrens channels) and we also had a mini bar - quite steeply priced but at least we had a fridge to use. Our room overlooked the front of the hotel which was not overly noisy but we are not used to traffic passing by and that took a little getting used to! Our only complaint about all the rooms at the Novotel is that there is no air con! Our room was very warm and we did ask for a fan which was in our room in no time - this made a huge difference. At the time of our visit the sun did decide to shine and it was a lovely warm weekend - maybe this was why our room was so warm and ordinarily the heating would be on!
Another good point of the rooms at the Novotel is you don't get noise from other guests in their rooms - maybe we just had quiet fellow guests but the hotel was full!

Breakfast was really good and worth the discounted price at check in (see tip below) The choice of continental and cooked breakfast was excellent and very fresh.

We also chose to dine in the hotel one night and chose the buffet offer - again no complaints and plenty choice for our son and for us too. The food was again to a high standard and what we really liked was the chef regularly checked the food.

Our 9 year old son loves swimming and the small pool was ideal after sightseeing or in the morning - there is no supervision from hotel staff but that was not a problem as we were there anyway. The added bonus was the Wii and Xbox at the reception / bar. This was where the children met and had great fun and as parents we could clearly see them all from the bar area. The bar prices are high for a hotel (Glass of wine was £5.90)

Tips
Ask for a room at the back of the hotel which has a lovely view of the river.
Don't book breakfast online at £12.50 per head - at check in you are offered breakfast at £8 per head and children under 12 eat free.

Should we return to York, I would stay at the Novotel again - in fact if there is a Novotel where we decide to next visit, that would be my first choice.
