Visually nice rooms but can be very noisy due to thin walls. It seems ridiculous that in a time when internet access is free in most places from McDonalds to the train, that the Novotel charges £10 a day!! Also charges £5 a day for car parking. Would not stay here again.

We needed three rooms for seven people at short notice to be ready for 11 in the morning (normal check-in is at 2) and to leave two cars there for an extra day. We couldn't sort it out on their website so I phoned the reservations manager directly.

He couldn't have been more helpful and everything was ready and waiting for us when we turned up (early at 10.30). The hotel is like every other Novotel I've stayed in - clean, smart with four star facilities, reasonable food (excellent breakfast!) and a swimming pool. In addition, the bar area had an Xbox and a Wii for younger members of the group. The staff were all friendly and helpful.

It is a City Centre hotel so we would have put up with a certain amount of noise but in fact it was very quiet and restful when we were there. It's also built on the banks of the River with a back entrance opening straight onto the towpath - ideal for a morning stroll into the countryside or into York with all its attractions.

I stayed for one night and I'm glad I wasn't staying any longer. The hotel itself is in an excellent location and the shared areas such as the lounge and restaurant are bright, modern and cheery with helpful staff.

The thing that lets it down terribly is the comfort of the beds. The "mattress" was like a piece of wood wrapped in fabric and the "pillows" seemed as if someone had just scooped a load of cotton wool balls into a pillowcase.

Such a shame as the size and cleanliness of the room was great. Come on Novotel, buy a few new mattresses and some decent pillows and I would definitely come again - but not until then...

Stayed for the weekend in January 09. Unfortunately this was my worst experience of Novotel, in the main due to the building work going on which was very noisy and started early in the morning. However, the hotel was in need of some refurbishment and I guess it had to be done at some time, so I would consider staying there again. The breakfast was very good and the location was great.

We stayed here for one night in the summer, managed to get a reasonable price for the room as it was a sunday night. The hotel looks better from the outside than the inside, but thats not to say the rooms aren't adequate. The location is quiet and only a few minutes walk into the centre. We ate at Oscar's which is in a new location which sadly detracts a little from it's charm. Otherwise another nice visit to a lovely city.
