“Doggy friendly!”
Reviewed 30 June 2010

We were determined to enjoy the sunshine in York with out little dog and Novotel made this possible. You wouldn't think a big modern hotel would be doggy friendly but they were. I appreciate this review might horrify those who are not doggy inclined and in fact put off by this particular policy but for those amongst us who can't bear the thought of leaving pooch in kennels Novotel makes a refreshing change. There was no fuss, restriction or extra charge for her to stay with us, in fact they bearly batted an eyelid.

Despite their doggy friendly policy the hotel is very clean and there is absolutely no evidence at all of pets being allowed to stay. I'm not in the habit of writing reviews but thought it worthy if other travellers wanted to travel to York with their furry friend.

Dog friendly pubs in York that we would recommed: 3 legged mare, Brigantes and The Minster Inn. All quick to offer a bowl of water and a treat. I think she enjoyed the trip just as much as we did.

We'll definitely be checking out Novotels first for any future breaks

This is a classic Novotel - they have not changed in more than 20 years and as such are dated. The price stated behind the reception for the standard room - £167; we paid £65 plus £6 to park on a Thursday night. Breakfast was listed as £14, but reduced on the day to £8 - but we had made other arrangements.

We had a room on the 4th (top) floor over looking the river, we had the window open all night & not a sound could be heard. The bed, which is firm & over 5 foot wide is very comfortable, French or British pillows available. There was a comfortable settee, which would also convert to a bed, two other chairs plus modern TV & tea making facilities. Toilet is seperate & the fact that there are 2 doors between the bedroom & corridors cut out any noisey guests. Shower is over bath & like many hotels it is time they converted to a walk in shower - much safer.

Would we stay again - the answer is yes at the right price - it is convenient for the centre of York and once you have stayed in a Novotel - you know what the lamp shades will look like!

Stayed here for 2 nights during the school holidays and I was not disappointed. The hotel caters for children free up to the age of 16 years. We had a superior double room with a sofa bed which was plenty big enough for my 8 year old. Facilities are fantastic with a swimming pool, wii console and xbox console in main reception all free of charge. Children's soft play area inside and a play area outside. Breakfast is to die for, so much choice normally £13.50 a head but we got it as part of our package so definitely got value for money. Very well organised at breakfast time even at busy times. Hotel was very clean, as were the rooms, always hot water and the bed was so comfy. Well worth a visit and I will be going back there.

This hotel is on the banks of the river Ouse and 2 minutes walk to Cliffords Tower and the wonderful city walls. You can leave your car at the hotel and all the major attractions of York are within walking distance.
The hotel itself is great value for money. We had a superior room for 4. Not a great deal of room around the sofa bed when it was up but not really a problem It was helpful to have a seperate loo and bathroom when 4 are sharing! A little short on storage, no drawers only 3 shelves!
The hotel is very family friendly, having an X box and Wii in the large foyer along with large TVs and a play area for younger children. It was fine for children to play here safely and happily whilst the adults enjoyed a drink at the bar. The food was excellent. We stayed when the hotel was full and even at peak breakfast times there was no waiting for a table. Breakfast was all self service, buffet style, the food fresh and the choice fine. I recommend walking the length of the city walls to really soak up the history of York ( and it's free!), the Castle museum, Jorvik and the York dungeon are definitely enjoyable. All in all we had a great time in York, even our teenagers enjoyed themselves (which is not always the case as Mums and Dads know!)

We enjoyed our recent three night stay and would recommend the Novotel York City entre for its good location for exploring York and great staff. Key features: location and staff. The rooms are pure Novotel (a bit quirky if you’ve never stayed before). The hotel has a large car park located on site. The swimming pool was nice after long days of exploring the city but was a bit small on occasion due to large number of guests staying over Easter Bank holiday weekend.

Considerations: the hotel is a bit tired around the edges but is undergoing refurbishments. Rooms could have been cleaned a bit better and weren’t as squeaky clean as other Novotel properties in which I’ve stayed.

Stayed here for two nights, 2 adults 2 children, sofa bed was ok for child but would have been nice for quilts to be used by children rather than well washed blankets. Travel cot had brown stains and well used linen again. Queen bed comfortable and quilts clean! Room tidy but needed to keep plug in sink drain to stop awful drainage smell, having done this the room was overall ok, but did not give you that wow feeling that you need on a break away. Breakfast was self service and good standard, swimming pool clean and well used by residents, unable to comment on other meals as restaurant had limited menus so advertised offers were not actually available, ended up eating out of hotel. Car parking is good and hotel location great for city. Overall its an OK hotel, but I'm sure there is better for your money.
