“In need of some serious TLC!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 August 2012

Stayed here on a recent visit to York. Payed around £180 for 2 nights. (As the York Races were on at the time).

Positives-
-Walking distance to the city centre and all tourist attractions.
-Large room.
-Reception area, garden etc were nice.

Negatives-
-The building is old and very tired. (Old smell throughout)
-Although we were happy with our room's size, it really wasn't cleaned to a very high standard.
-The kettle was grubby.
-The furniture looked like it had been pulled out of a skip- it was so old and used.
-Our room was not serviced on our 2nd day.
-When the room above us had a shower we had a nice little puddle of water in our room-COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE. This wasn't a new problem either- because there was water stains all over the roof from where it happens all the time obviously. (Surely our room should of been put out of order till they fixed the leak?! No, money speaks louder than common sense)
-We only ever dealt with reception staff at check in and check out- they did what they had to do, answered our questions, but there was no small talk from them.

We believe we over paid for our room at this hotel. If we had payed a much lower price we probably would of been content enough. We spent very little time in the hotel and our room but still we found the issues highlighted to be annoying. There are plenty of nice hotels in York, don't waste your time here! I would not reccommend this hotel to a friend.

yes, the elmbank is a bit tired and jaded but our room was perfectly clean and the bathroom was spotless. i cant see why people complain about the place unless they sit in their room all day.we went out at 10 am and back around midnight and if your bed is comfy and clean, whats the problem. i would go back there anytime.

Room Tip: dont worry about the negative reviews if you are only looking for somewhere to get your head down. i...

I am not usually very negative about anywhere I stay but I was not at all impressed with this hotel. We booked a night in this hotel as we had been at York races that day. We couldn't book in until late as we had to be in the suite at the races for 12.00 noon, so we dropped our bag off and booked in around 7.00 pm. This did not start well, we had booked through the Internet and the price was £105 for the night without breakfast, I thought this was very expensive but as all other hotels in the area were booked up when we booked we had little choice. On the confirmation booking the price given for breakfast was £6.95. We were told breakfast was in fact £8.95, the web site hadn't been updated.....
The receptionist was really unfriendly, not a smile or any small talk in her, maybe she was having a bad day!!
The room was very basic and the duvet was too small for the large, hard bed.
The hotel was presumably very old but I felt it had a generally unwelcoming feel to it. I found it very oppressive.
I will definitely not stop here again, we have stayed in much nicer places for almost half the price....with breakfast.
Not a pleasant end to an otherwise fantastic day at the races.

Room Tip: Don't bother booking!!

Hotel is ideally located for access (by foot or otherwise) to city centre and/or race course. Main building is dated but all in all I would say this adds to its charm and local history and art-deco look makes it worth a visit. Restaurant food is ok but there are plenty of restaurants in York should you want something better. Breakfast is very good with plenty of choice. Staff were helpful and friendly and nothing was too much for them. I stayed in courtyard rooms as party of a group of about 20 and all our needs were catered for over a 2 night stay for the races.

From the beginning we should have moved, rude staff and free wi-fi only happens in the foyer if you are first on. The rooms are very small and there is no fridge in the room, very inconvenient. Poorly located as you need to drive everywhere. The rudest staff I have ever met in all my years of travel.

Room Tip: There are none.

OK, so the title pretty much sums it up!
I was taking my 78yo father around while he was visiting me in the UK from Australia. I knew he didn't want to spend much, so I aimed for cheap places and some good places. This one was one of the cheap place and so I thought, close to transport (National Rail), so he didn't stress that I was spending too much money.
Despite the fact that it does not look that far from the National Rail Network hub, out of old London town, it was still about a 10 minute hike from the train station. I had read some reviews that the staff were a bit stand-off-ish but when we checked it they were fine. Helpful and happy to store our luggage so we could spend our only day seeing the sights. By the way York was great, and worth a day trip more than anything.
Now the rooms. If you stayed at your great Aunties and were happy for the associated smell of moth balls then... Hey knock yourself out here. This place is for you!!! We stayed in a separate building across the road from the main hotel. I will say that the room walls are tissue paper thin. Based on my waking up at about 2am and either hearing someone pleading for his life for them not to kill him or the fact that he was screaming in his sleep. Either way it did make me get up look outside the room and then make sure the room was surely locked.
Needless to say I will not be staying again... But as I said it was a cheap place to stay.
I would say enjoy but I really doubt that you will.

Room Tip: If you want budget. I would actually suggest you stay at a backpackers. There are some options on se...

I am not sure if the hotel has just had some renovation work done, or maybe the other reviews were just expecting too much?? We loved this hotel and our only regret was that we only stayed 1 night! We loved the old style of the hotel, especially the lobby and the stairs leading up to the rooms. From what we could make out there appears to be 3 parts to this hotel: The Elmbank Hotel in the main building (where we stayed), The Elmbank Lodge across the road and then a few random rooms at the back of the hotel. The hotel itself is really clean and the rooms are really nice. They have a huge window which you can open, a brand new flat-screen TV and a bathroom that looks really new. We had a really comfortable stay and were very satisfied with our stay, especially considering it was the cheapest hotel we could find in York. The hotel is probably more like a 15-20 minute walk from the city centre, but it was an enjoyable walk. They have parking right outside the hotel and we found a park without any hassle. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend if staying in York.
