“Not good”
Reviewed 29 April 2014

Stayed in this hotel last Saturday with a friend , I get it's an old building but cleanliness costs nothing , the room carpet was disgusting the furniture was dated and very tatty ready for the tip realy . Although the bathroom is modern it was filthy all scum on the doors n hairs all over the floor . Again cleanliness !!!!!! The toilets downstairs near the lounge area was appalling and smelt disgusting , think your cleanin staff need retraining . All in all needs a dam good clean , n the staff retraining in customer service !!! Rude and unhelpful and for £100 for a night won't be EVER stopping here again :)

Dear Angell,

Thank you for your recent review and rating.

Refurbishments are continuous within the Hotel. We have recently commenced our deep cleaning process and hope that our guests bear with us during this time. York is a very popular City all year round which means that it is sometimes tricky for rooms to be out of service due to demand.

The Management and Staff hope you will return to York and the Elmbank Hotel & Lodge.

Stayed here for one night with my friend. Hotel is very grande and old fashioned. Rooms were nice and clean. Big open fire in lounge which was nice. Staff friendly, what we did see of them. Quite limited parking. Only a few spaces so had to park on a private street round the corner. Only negative I could say.

Dear Rachel,

Thank you for your review, rating and recommendation.

The Elmbank Hotel is a Grade II listed building which still retains many of the original features.

Parking is sometimes troublesome in York especially at weekends as we have residential and business premises in the same area. The Hotel has three free designated zones on a 1st come, 1st served basis. If these spaces are full on arrival our Reception Team are normally able to direct guests to the nearest free parking just a short walk away. Unfortunately we are unable to reserve spaces.

The Management and Staff are very glad you have enjoyed the stay with us and hope to see you again in the future.

My husband booked this hotel as a surprise for our anniversary. He had spent hours searching and it seemed beautiful on the internet. On entering the hotel we both said 'wow', the reception area and stairs were stunning so we were very excited to see our room.
Oh dear soooooo small!!! We've never stayed in such a tiny room, couldn't have stayed for longer than 1 night in it, bathroom you could barely turn round in either.
What a shame because it could have been so much better. The rooms were so hot you could barely breathe, even with no radiator on and window wide open all night!! I wish I hadn't looked begin the bed and bedside tables as the dust and dead insects was disgusting. :(
The girl on reception desp needs to learn some peopls skills to, she was in the verge of being rude.
Having said that we slept ok and it's approx 10 mins from town so ok to walk yet not to near for night time noise.
We paid £118 eek for 1 night and will def not be going back.

Dear StvnPeck,

Thank you for your review and rating.

Accommodation within the Elmbank Hotel & Lodge vary in size. Larger rooms are available if requested (on availability).

The UK has been experiencing some warm spells of late which has lead to and increase in temperature as well as the insect population. Our Housekeeping Staff open the accommodation windows to air the rooms after cleaning. This can sometimes lead to dust and insect movement from outside.

Staff are on hand 24 hours a day to resolve any issues that may arise during your stay, this service extends to extra housekeeping duties.

The Management and Staff hope that you will return to York and consider booking with the Elmbank Hotel & Lodge.

booked a double and single for mothers day. rooms were fine apart from very creaky floor in the double room (232).
£5 in a cab to the heart of the city.
Four course table d' hote menu in the evening was tremendous value for money and breakfast was great.
The bad reviews had me apologising before I got there but this place is fantastic value for money.
I have paid twice as much for much worse.
would definitely return.

A nice stroll from the city. Aged rooms with an above average price tag. The service was adequate but nothing beyond. The hotel bar and anti room were pleasant and hold the heart of the hotel. The hotel does the job. I would expect the carpets within the rooms are due renewing.

The Elmbank Hotel is in a good location for getting into York. The hotel rooms are adequate but the main reception area with its leather sofas and real fire is fab. A little pricey at £94 which doesnt include breakfast but overall not a bad hotel.

Dear Kirsten,

Thank you for your review and rating.

The Elmbank Hotel is situated a mere 600 metres from the City boundary walls to the south side. Not too far away for a short stroll into town via the leafy suburb.

Prices at the Hotel for weekend reservations are in keeping with the surrounding areas and can often be more expensive if booking within the City boundary walls. It pays to shop around.

The Management and Staff hope you have enjoyed the visit and that you return in the future.

First interest by staff on arrival , get you to pay for the room ! I can see why, as you would not want to pay after you had seen the room and the state of the Hotel . Very dirty loose fitting old carpets and bad décor. Dead flies on the staircase window sill . The room was very small for a twin room , dirty bathroom although it had been refitted . Old tatty towels , and furniture that was falling to bits .

I am pleased this was a weekend away with some mates and not a weekend away with my wife as we would not have stayed , and will certainly not go back .

The breakfast was a slightly better experience , although we had a chuckle at the breakfast cereal in the plastic "wicks" baskets and the instant coffee served in a silver pot

You really need a deep clean on this Hotel or a complete refit

Dear Peter,

Thank you for your recent review and rating.

The Elmbank Hotel is a Grade II listed building which still retains many of the original features. The décor within the public areas is in keeping with the age of the building(circa 1870).

We have had a recent mild spell of weather within the UK leading to a sharp increase in insect population earlier than expected. Public areas are cleaned on a regular basis.

Staff are on hand 24 hours a day to resolve any issues that may arise during your stay, this extends to extra housekeeping duties.

Refurbishments to guest accommodation has commenced however this is a slow process as York is a popular city all year round.

Cereals are stored in large plastic dispensers, have serving scoops and self closing lids for hygiene purposes and the safety of our guests.

The Management and Staff hope that you will return to York and consider booking with us again.
