we called in while in York as we had booked for a few nights later in the week. the place was a mess and needed a good clean. the staff were most unfriendly so we decided to cancel our booking. Because we had prepaid at a discount, we were not eligible for any sort of a refund but it was better to write off a few hundred pounds than to have to stay here. Avoid like the plague

This hotel is great, As soon as you walk in, its like a mansion and kinda like a museum (in a good way). The staff were friendly and the bar/beer garden was really nice and relaxed, the room does need modernising but its quite spacious. Bed was really comfy and lots of towels! Would defo stay here again, the only thing was the steep room price (£100!!) but all in all, really liked this gem of a hotel.... Please ignore the unfair negative reviews, its great!

Dear Michael,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a positive review for our Hotel. We really do appreciate it.

Refurbishments are a slow process but continuous. We are working our way through the list of suggestions from numerous review sites, hopefully without too much disruption to our guests.

The Management and Staff hope you will come and visit us in the future.

Thank you once again. :D

Nice clean hotel near all the attractions in York. The room was very large and spacious.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. The continental breakfast was excellent. Didn't have the full English but it looked very nice. You could have as much as you wanted.

If we come back to York we will stay here again.

We read some of the reviews beforehand and were a little concerned, but we need'nt have worried, we stayed in May for 2 nights, attended the races as part of a hen party. The breakfast was extra but was excellent value for money as was the hotel. The staff were polite, friendly and helpful. Agreed the rooms were in need of updating but they were clean and pefectly acceptable for the price. The location is perfect for the races and the city centre. We used several taxis and the drivers were very knowledgeable and cheerfull and promoted some of Yorks attractions. You get what you pay for, I would stay again. If you are not happy with any aspect of your stay then tell the staff and give them the opportunity to put it right!

Dear MrsE,

Thank you so much for the honest review and rating.

As you say, most problems can be dealt with whilst the guest is still in the Hotel and nothing is too much trouble for our Staff. We are here to assist in any way possible.

The Management and Staff are very pleased you have enjoyed the visit to York as it is a very friendly place with much to see and do. We hope you will come back to visit again.

Once again, thank you for your comments.

We stayed with a group of friends last weekend and although many have said here on TA that the rooms are dated and need of an overhaul, to me it depends on your reasons for staying here. We were at the races and then into the centre for a meal and a few drinks and in this regard the hotel was just what we needed, i.e. a place to sleep. So being so close to the race course and only a ten minutes from the centre this was exactly what we wanted. Yes the rooms need an overhaul but that didn't concern us really. The hotel itself is very attractive. Good entrance and a winding staircase to get the upper floor rooms but that was also part of its attraction. The bar was a decent size with easy access to the outside seating area and breakfast in the morning was a buffet style but plenty of choice. A was able to have a full English breakfast which I thoroughly enjoyed. The staff were pretty good with a few communication issues but overall pleasant enough. The hotel could do with some more parking as it was full when we visited and I had to park three streets away, so get there early and find a parking space if you can. All in all this did exactly what we wanted it to do without any real wow factor. I was a little bit concerned before we went when I saw how low this place was rated on TA but I suppose this reflects the fact the rooms are so dated and if you are here for a romantic break then it's not ideal. Still no complaints from us and I would use this place again for the same reasons we used it this time.

Dear Steve,

Thank you for taking the time to review our Hotel on TripAdvisor.

Parking is troublesome in York, especially during race meetings as business and private premises occupy the same areas. We would also recommend arriving early to try and get parking spaces. This does not however allow early check in with most Hotel in the area.

Refurbishment have been continuous. We have been able to pick up the pace a little recently. A couple of new bathrooms, new carpets to some room as well as public areas and even a new Wi-Fi system which should be completed by the end of this month. We do hope this does not cause too mush disruption to our guests.

The Management and Staff are pleased to have met with your needs during your stay and hope to see you in the future.
