“Lovely B&B”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 November 2012

My colleague and I stayed here for four nights as we were doing a course in the University of York. Situated about a 25 minute walk from Alcuin College in the University (although we were subsequently there was a shorter route through a field) and a stroll from the city (although the bus goes very frequently from right across the road.

This is a very quaint B&B with a very pleasant and helpful owner, she was on hand with all sorts of information whenever we needed it. It was extremely warm which was great as we visited at a particularly cold time of the year. Our room had a large en suite with a bath and the room was extremely well dressed.

The only fault we found was with the "twin room" we had booked. Our room consisted of a King size bed and a not very comfortable looking metal framed couch/bed. We hadn't anticipated that one of us would have to sleep in a less than comfortable looking bed so we tossed a coin for it, unfortunately, I lost. It was quite a short single "bed", I'm not particularly tall but even I found it short. The mattress was extremely springy, to the point of digging into my side, and I didn't manage to sleep at all on the first two nights. On the third night, my colleague graciously offered me the other half of the King sized bed and I eventually got a good nights sleep. There was no comparison between the quality of the two beds so it might be worth noting if booking a twin room. When you are splitting a bill, you expect that both occupants will get the same level of comfort.

All in all, a very enjoyable stay though.

The Hollies was a last minute booking. The guesthouse was average in our experience. We were given the key and some basic information about buses but were not shown to our room. Our room was certainly not as clean as it should have been and the towels had long seen better days. Light above mirror in bathroom not working. The full English breakfast was good but other choices were basic with no extra frills! Milk for cereals and juice was served warm!! In our view this pleasant guest house was not what we have experienced in other 4 star accommodation.

We had a lovely 2 night stay following our wedding at Hollies guest house. The room was comfortable and clean as was the whole house, tastefully decorated and very pleasant. The breakfast in the mornings were lovely and set us up well for a day of strolling round York.

The walk into York took about 20 minutes by the river and was very pleasant, we were lucky to have good weather for this!
We were unsure about the location and the walk in, but comparing how much we have spent on car parking in York before and how much we would have had to spend on parking at Hotels in the city centre this was definitely the better option and luckily my husband was able to park off road in front of the house.

The only reason I have given it 4 stars for this stay is because we know there are many beautiful rooms in this b&b and it would've been nice to have enjoyed one a little more luxurious than the room we were in (though it was still a beautiful room!!) seen as we were on our post wedding break. And the noise from the road was noticeable- we live just off a busy A road so are used to the noise but with this being one of the main roads into York centre you will get the noise from the lorries and emergency services!

Overall though we really enjoyed our stay and would definitely consider returning.

We have just returned from a 2 day stay and we couldnt have asked for a better place to stay.
The owners were fantastic nothing was to much trouble they were great for giving information on places to visit and on local bus routes . The breakfast was excellant lovley and hot and plenty of choice. The room we had was on the first floor and it was lovley plenty of space and every thing you needed,it was nice and quite and the beds were so comfortable .We had agreat time and would not hesitate to recomend this Guest House to any one that wanted to visit york.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Hollies. Everything you would require - clean, tasty breakfast, excellent hosts. We originally wanted to book closer to the city centre but the 20-30 min stroll along the river is a great way to enter York, either across the millenium bridge or the blue bridge, both ways bring you to the centre. We walked ourselves to exhaustion which was perfect as the only complaint is of the, slight, noise of traffic all night, but the beds are soooooo comfy that we slept fine.

Room Tip: Id recommend a stay here but with a room at the rear to minimise the noise of traffic on the main ro...

Stayed for three nights. Very pleasant b&b. Bedroom comfortable, en-suite a little small but adequate. (Could do with rubber mat in shower to prevent any slips). Room was a little cold but there was an extra heater if needed.
Full english breadfast cooked to order, also cereal and fresh fruit available.
Tea & coffee facilities in room, also hairdrier and coloured TV.
Very handy for walk into York along the river, (takes about 20 mins.) or there are several buses almost on the doorstep.
Plough Inn, about 10 mins down the road, is a very good pub with good pub food.
