Beautiful house set in fabulous grounds. The interior has been lovingly restored yet has a slightly rock and roll feel to it. Apparently one of its many previous uses was a night club. The staff were attentive however the big let down was the food, specifically main courses. We were a large group staying over 2 days and on the final night dinner the chicken I received was not warm. The staff kindly resolved the matter however I had lost confidence as had the rest of the party. This was quite obvious as the majority of our party left half eaten plates of food. Interestingly no one from the management addressed the matter with us. Would I stay again, yes, just would eat breakfast and the snacks.

Room Tip: The house.

We stayed here for one night and I couldnt fault the place. Apart from the lovely hotel and grounds it is the staff that so make this place. They cant do enough for you and nothing is too much trouble I just wish all hotels were run like this one. We had a meal in the restaurant and again it was gorgeous. I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel and its facilities and will definately be going again.

Room Tip: We had room 30 overlooking the gardens and the little boy statue room was lovely

This is the best Hotel in York. Real country house feel.Excellent service and good food.The Gardens are unsung part of the appeal .They are well worth spending some time in. Spa could do with some attention but welcome was excellent.

My wife and I stayed at this hotel in June 2012. On arrival we were 'upgraded' from a courtyard room to a suite, downstairs in a cottage just down the road. Whist this was appreciated the cottage felt like that it was not part of the hotel and when a family with young kids moved in upstairs the noise became unacceptable. The hotel were good enough to move us and gave us some champagne for our trouble. Another issue was with snacks in the lounge. We ordered sandwiches and intended to follow with a sweet. The sandwiches were fine but we wanted a sweet from another menu. We were told that we could have the sweet but only if we sat in another room! Ice cream was fine where we were but not artic roll. Couldn't believe it but according to the Manager rules is rules and only the company's board can approve artic roll in the lounge.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the main building

Management response:Responded 27 June 2012

We are sorry that these guests were inconvenienced by fellow travelers staying in the room above, but pleased to hear that our prompt actions and apologies were appreciated.

However, we are perplexed by the second issue raised: a ‘restricted choice’ of menus and our alleged inflexibility, as our resident guests can choose from the following dining options:
 A fine dining ‘A-la-carte’ menu is offered in our dining rooms with a choice of six first courses, six main courses and six puddings;
 A substantial snack menu including warm dishes and puddings, is available to be served on the Terrace and in the Pineapple room;
 Full 24-hour room-service menu is another option;

However, it is our conscious decision that the hotel’s 18th century Drawing Room decorated with period furnishing of the National Trust’s standards, should be reserved for guests wishing to enjoy a cocktail or a glass of Champagne prior to their dinner or luncheon, with only finger sandwiches and canapés being served there, and afternoon tea (which is similar), but not main courses or puddings.

We hope that these guests enjoyed all other aspects of their visit to our historic house hotel.

The gardens were a surprise and a delight. Overall, excellent food, attentive service and good quality accomodation. We spent significantly more last year at Le Manoir and Middlethorpe Hall in our opinion was better.

Highly recommended and we will be returning soon.
