“Excellent hotel and wonderful friendly staff”
Reviewed 28 July 2012 via mobile

Stayed at Middlethorpe Hall for my 40th birthday early this week. We stayed in the main hall, rooms were lovely i would not say they are dated but in keeping, i have stayed in a few hotels which have been extremely dated. We are regular visitors to york and have stayed in a number of hotels, but i can say this was the best and would definately return. The staff could not have done enough, the porter was extremely helpful, friendly and pleasant and so was the waiting staff, reception staff and the lady that served us for breakfast. Unfortunately we were only there one night, but a birthday i certainly wont forget. The only slight let down was the jacuzzi and steam room was not in service but the cool pool made up for it, which was definately needed as it was a hot day. Keep up the good work and thank you for a memorable birthday.

I stayed at Middlethorpe Hall & Spa for 3 nights (from Mon 25th July 2012) and i have to say i forgot hotels like this existed. The hotel was absolutely lovely and well maintained and if you read up before booking, you will know it is an historic building that has been restored and some of the furniture antique and decor what some would call "old fashioned", yet beautifully done! I had a single room though the bed was wider than your average single bed with a lovely bathroom....a home from home! Although no tea/coffee making facilities are in your room, you can request said facilities for your room. The food albeit a little expensive was very very nice, so too the chardonnay and pink champagne :-). I could not fault a thing....the food, breakfast, spa, treatments, gym (although small), the staff. Now it could be that the hotel was quiet during my stay, but the receptionists and restaurant staff all greeted me by name which not only surprised me, but made me feel very special. It was also the little things.....the turndown service ( i didnt think that existed anymore!!), the shortbread biscuits (that were always replenished), the complimentary fruit bowl, the daily service of your room, just everything in general made my stay so pleasant. Oh and best of all....the bus service that runs every half hour that takes you right into the centre of York and back again of course!

If you want to feel and be treated like royalty, Middlethorpe Hall & Spa IS the place. Fantastic stay and i will definately be going back.

Thank you to all at Middlethorpe Hall & Spa. Blake Room 6

Just a one nighter before a meeting. I had a room on the second floor of the main house.

Old fashioned, but clean and in good condition. Decent sized room and bathroom.

Picked a lovely sunny day so went for a swim in the spa (oddly on the back of what used to be 2 semi-detached cottages). Then sat on the terrace with a cold cider.

Dinner was limited to the only restaurant which is on the expensive side if you just wanted (as I really did) a light meal.

Staff all very friendly and helpful.

Certainly go back for a social stay if in the area.

This historic country house hotel is an absolute jewel. I felt as if I were a guest at Downton Abbey, the grand estate of PBS fame. We had a delightful, gabled second floor room in the stable block adjacent to the main house, with views of the garden and a small fountain. Our room was very comfortable, furnished with antiques and charm. After our long journey (we had started the morning in Reims, France), we were happy to find a large bottle of water and a tin of shortbread cookies in our room. The bathroom had nice amenities (shampoo, body lotion, etc.), although not much room to spread out. We had drinks and canapes in the drawing room prior to dinner. The service in the dining room is well-meaning but lacking. Food is very good, especially the traditional Yorkshire breakfasts. There is a walking path into York. It's a long walk (about 2 miles) but given our epicurean indulgences, we needed the exercise and found it a very pleasant excursion. The gardens around Middlethorpe are also a lovely place to explore. And since it is a nonprofit National Trust property, we felt as if our stay there also did good.

Beautiful spot on the edge of York. We stayed in a lovely suite on a package that included champagne, massages an dinner.

If we could ask for any improvement, the menu was a touch heavy even for a British summer, and didn't vary from nightto night, but otherwise it was a pretty flawless location.

I was lucky enough to spend two nights here with my wife in one of the courtyard suites, the suite was very well furnishes with antiques and a giant bed. A chilled bottle of champagne, homemade chocolates and fresh fruit were waiting for us in our suite when we checked in. The main hotel is a beautiful building as are the vast gardens. A big draw for us was the food which did not dissapoint. The first night we opted for the gourmet/tasting menu with matched wines which was fantastic and consisted of reduced portions of two starters, two mains and two desserts each plus coffee and petit fours along with a different glass of wine for each course. This was a fantastic selection and really showed off the kitchen teams skills, the hotel should promote it more as we were only aware of it having seen it on the website. I believe it is £65 each for the food or £95 each with the matched wines, not cheap but well worth it as a treat. Breakfast was very good as was the evening meal, all staff very friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. Tea and coffee delivered to our suite within minutes of us calling for it on a morning. All in all it cannot be faulted and makes an excellent luxury treat for a special occasion, I am already saving up for our next visit!

I recently stayed here through work. What a pleasant surprise. Great location (slightly out of York). The standard of service was excellent. Rooms are comfortable and well appointed. The two things that set it apart from the usual chains (aside from the character of the main building) are the food and grounds. The food was excellent! The grounds are great to walk around, and make a great place to work after a long day working.
