“A long weekend at Middlethorpe Hall”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 September 2012

A superb hotel in beautiful surroundings. All you would expect from a country house hotel. The staff were friendly and attentive without being intrusive. The room we had looked out over the garden and was very clean and well maintained. We dined in the restaurant twice over our stay and the food was beautifully presented and always hot. The only negative we found was that the menu remained the same throughout our 4 day stay and would benefit from perhaps one additional main dish changed each day. Breakfast was delicious with excellent ingredients perfectly cooked. Plenty of choice with a buffet included. Traffic noise form the A64 was not a problem and I'm sure the Archbishop of York who resides just down the road isn't troubled by it either! Well worth a visit.

Room Tip: There is a small lift to all floors but if you don't like lifts, ask for a lower floor room or a...

The hotel is interesting, If you enjoy heritage etc., comfortable rooms (we stayed in the hall not the cottages ajoining) & excellent service all round. Very quiet & relaxing with lovely gardens. Good facilities at the spa but could be a pain if it's raining as the spa is across the road from the hall. Champagne afternoon tea quite pleasent in the drawing room. The restaurant was fair but disappointing for the price. Bland pea soup or should I say velouté, nasty garlic purée with the trout, clingfilm still wrapped around a mediocre chicken terrine. tasteless coffee parfait, mushy bitter strawberries but the trout & lamb were cooked to perfection & delicious? So in short a very nice stay but eat elsewhere.

Room Tip: Not sure about the cottages you may feel a little remote to the historic experience of the hall. Ask...

Hotel chosen for a weekend break to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Porter to carry bags available. Nice friendly staff, who recognised us and presented the room key when requested. A local map and other info provided by reception when asked. Room had a queen/king sized bed (not sure which) which had plenty of pillows and was very roomy and comfy. The wardrobe had hangers, but due to it being next to a radiator, the right had door didn't open fully and was a little annoying. No tea or coffee facilities provided in the room, but a large bottle of water instead. Complimentary toiletries and plenty of towels, haridryer, wi-fi, tv, lots of local reading materials, guides, notepaper and tissues provided. Lights were a little dim. The windows were single glazed and some outside noise could be heard. Walls were also a bit thin and in the morning, the other guests could be heard. A good sleep was had as there wasn't much foot traffic at night. Shower over a bath, very roomy and a good shower from the taps. The only thing I disliked was when the maid turned on the radiator after the morning room service and again in the evening after the evening turn down service, after I had deliberately turned it off, on a hot day. The dinner in the restaurant was very pleasant even for a fussy eater like me and the choice of having drinks in the drawing room or in the bedroom was welcome. My husband had a delicious steak, which was the special of the day.The breakfast was continental and cooked. The cook was very accomodating of my egg request, as I was pregnant. Beautiful grounds to walk around and admire. The spa was also an enjoyable experience. Again the staff were very accomodating with regards to my pregnancy and a hot tub, gym and pool were also available. Overall a good break and nice experience. would definately recommend.

Room Tip: Standard double in the courtyard.

I booked this hotel for a very special romantic trip (our first trip away), based on these reviews. It was more expensive that I have ever paid for a room – over £180 a night! I would agree that the grounds are superb, the breakfast was good and the swimming pool is nice if not crowded. I would also agree that the staff are very friendly (as one often finds in Northern England) and helpful when asked a question. I had a few niggly points. Firstly I had booked a superior room in the courtyard. It appears the only extra for paying more is a view of the garden. However this is a limited view (see picture) from a small window low down. Both this window and the window at the end of the bed don’t have any net curtains, so the main curtains need to be closed to dress/sleep etc. Otherwise you end up lying in bed looking directly up to the window of a room in the main house or to the side at people walking in the garden! Not romantic! First recommendation - please fit nets. I wouldn’t therefore pay the extra for a “view”. Secondly we were told on arrival that we could order tea from room service in the morning. It wasn’t made clear that we could have had tea-making facilities so we could have tea when we wanted without a delay. On the second day we asked for tea-making facilities but these took nearly an hour to arrive! I have just read that we could have had a duvet instead of the heavy blankets. Second point – please improve your information for guests on what is available on request. Also our room appeared to be near a staff storage cupboard and was very noisy with the staff slamming the door.

The hotel is a way out of the city and the bus is not cheap. Carparking in York is prohibitive. But, again, when asked, the receptionist pointed out a nice way to walk in (partly along the river) although this took the best part of an hour.

We stayed for 2 nights to celebrate our pearl anniversary and had a wonderful weekend. We were upgraded on our arrival to a superior room in the courtyard overlooking the beautiful gardens which was lovely, and had an excellent meal in the restuarant. The service is excellent and the staff all very friendlly and welcoming. Such a nice peaceful hotel; very relaxing, especially the spa, and within easy walking distance of York.

First, I want to say that without exception the Staff here were superb, friendly, professional and efficient. The location is on the outskirts of York, easy to get to/from. We were upgraded on arrival to a Junior Suite which was in the courtyard, my only complaint is that being on the ground floor, these are dark rooms and the dark antique furnishing sucks the light out of the rooms, and also the floors and not very soundproof, so if you have someone above, you hear most things and especially people walking around.

The breakfasts were excellent, Full Yorkshire recommended, obviously local produce and meats.

The Spa feels a bit like a swimming pool and Sauna/Steam room on the back of someone's house, and is a little scruffy now, the pool was cold and it needs a little love and attention. Also lots of notices telling you what you cannot do !

In summary - nice stay, nice staff, nice food, great gardens, but sometimes staying in an antique shop can be a little overrated - that said, good value for 3 nights.

Room Tip: If in the Junior Suites, ask for an upstairs room.

We rarely return to a hotel, but we enjoyed our stay at Middlethorpe Hall several years ago so much that we decided to overnight there on our way back from Scotland. I'm delighted to say that it is as excellent and lovely as ever.

The building itself is stunning, although there is a little noise from the A road at the end of the grounds. Do stay in the main house if you can, as the bedrooms are full of character and, like the rest of the hotel, very comfortable and elegant.

Pre-dinner drinks are served in the enormous and very beautiful former ballroom of the house. Dinner is expensive but the food and service is excellent, as was breakfast.

The staff are very friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Stay in the main house. Rooms at the front are quieter.
