Visit for a birthday to this hotel 18/3/13 to 21/3/13

What a lovely hotel and the staff make it so enjoyable.

We have never stayed ANYWHERE that the staff have been so helpful, they smile and just cannot do enough for you.
The hotel itself was like being in Downton Abbey....it was warm, comfortable clean, posh and relaxing. We even got a free upgrade to a suite

The spa was also brilliant, clean and inviting as again were the staff

Whoever trains these people should train the staff at M&S in York....atrocious

The whole experience was excellent from start to finish and guess what?...we will be back next year for definate

Room Tip: Ask for a top floor as the floorboards do creek

I was surprised to a birthday weekend away here and it was simply stunning. I have never stayed anywhere nicer than this hotel. From the minute we pulled up to the breathtaking building and the staff welcomed us and took our bags, I knew it was going to be special.
We got upgraded to a suite which was beautiful and very comfy. The room had everything we needed.
We used the spa facilities on both days, excellent standard and not crowded.
The staff in the evening were out of this world, the attention to detail excellent. The choice of food, standard of food and the service were all 5*
Would definitely go back here!!!

Booked through Expedia a few months ago as a belated birthday trip for Mrs Lard for 2 nights Bed and breakfast at just under £240 which was a superior double room in the main house. We arrived on the Sunday morning at 1030 which we knew was too early for our room to be ready so we re taken through to the beautiful drawing room for coffee and biscuits before we headed out to York for the day. The hotel itself is set just back from the main road but you wouldn't notice. On arrival the front just screams 'Regal' at you and that pretty much stayed with you throughout. All the rooms in the hotel were decorated in such a way that it retained its Regal character from the drawing room through to the dining room and bedrooms. We used all the facilities in the hotel with the exception of dining in the evening as we had chosen to eat out in the city and found them to be pretty good with just a few minus points that stopped it from being excellent and I list as follows. 1. Service, there seemed to be an abundance of staff around but they remained discreet in such a way that it almost felt the hotel was your own which was great. The downside to the service was the at breakfast where there was only one member of staff taking your order who constantly appeared flustered and apologised for us waiting, this went on so much that she actually made me feel on edge. This does need to be addressed as you could see from the faces of other guests that this was becoming annoying yet at the same time there were several staff bringing the food but not taking orders. 2. Accommodation, loverly big bed and nice bright room with great view of the gardens and surrounds (we stayed in number 8) again the downside was no tea/coffee facilities. 3. Location the hotel is opposite the race course and just a 10 minute drive into york which at £8 gets expensive after a few taxi rides we opted for the park and ride, the nearest being Askam Bar. 4. Leisure facilities, nice warm pool (13m) with a sauna, steam room and jacuzzi all of which was run by friendly and helpful staff. Again another point which stops it from being excellent were the changing rooms which were far too small and very outdated i would say any more than 3 people in there it was too cramped. All in all a very enjoyable stay with just a few improvements this could be great.

The only thing I was unhappy about was that we had to come home. This is a converted country residence, now owned and run by the National Trust as a traditional and really quite luxurious hotel. On arrival you get a very warm welcome, and the staff really can't do enough for you. We stayed in one of the courtyard rooms, which was peaceful and relaxing. The rooms are quirky and interesting. You keep noticing new things and there are some very thoughtful touches. The main building itself is very impressive, the building having been carefully restored to most of the original features. Antiques are everywhere including the guest bedrooms. You could easily believe you had been invited to stay at the home of a wealthy aristocrat. The grounds are spectacular and a walk through them is a must. I can only imagine what they would be like in the summer. The pool and spa was a real treat too. A perfectly decent sized pool for the size of the hotel as well as a jacuzzi steam room and sauna. We didn't have any spa treatments so I cannot comment on them. The house (it feels more appropriate to call it that than hotel) also has a number of other public rooms including a very cosy lounge and a most impressive drawing room. The dining rooms are equally impressive with thick oak panelled walls and views across the South facing rear of the building. We didn't have an evening meal but breakfast. Is served in the same room. Nice touches again such as freshly squeezed orange juice. Orders are taken for cooked breakfast items. (personally i would have preferred buffet style but that says more about me and how much I eat than anything else) The quality of the ingredients is very high and the experience is a good one.
If you want the hotel to be like a Marriot or similar chain, then you might not like it. There are none of the things that make it almost possible to navigate the hotel blindfolded due to their consistency and branding. I'm not suggesting there is anything wrong with chain hotels (and if you read my reviews you'll see a few positive Marriot reviews too) Middlethorpe is much more grown up and very individual. Children are welcome but we didn't see any and to be honest I wouldn't describe the hotel as ideal for families. There are better hotels to take children where they are well catered for. But for an anniversary treat or short break just a few minutes from York City centre, I seriously doubt you will find a more charming place to stay. It needn't be expensive either. Our night there with full breakfast and full use of the facilities cost less than a night in a Holiday Inn Express. Middlethorpe is in a different league. I want to go back, now!

My wife and I have just spent three days at lovely Middlethorpe Hall, on the occasion of our 43rd wedding anniversary. On arrival we were informed we had been upgraded and on discovering we had been moved to the truly impressive Duke of York suite, felt very privileged indeed. The traditional furnishings and ambience of the suite fully encompassed the history that Middlethorpe represents and conveys so well. The immaculate surroundings, including grounds, coupled with attentive and friendly staff only confirmed our initial thoughts that we had chosen a special place to stay. We were also enjoying a reunion in York with several old work colleagues and friends, some of whom were also staying at Middlethorpe and they appeared to be similarly impressed. We did not dine in the evening due to our programme but did enjoy very substantial and well prepared full Yorkshire breakfasts and a tasty, immaculately presented Sunday lunch. The small Spa offered a sizeable swimming pool, perfect for a relaxing swim before facing the rigours of shopping in York and enjoying all the other delights on offer. All in all our stay at Middlethorpe was memorable and the upgrade only enhanced what we felt would have been a very special week-end in any case. A very heartfelt thank you to the management and staff at Middlethorpe for ensuring the memories of our anniversary will stay with us for a very long time.

We stayed here as a special treat to celebrate our Silver Wedding anniversary. We had booked a Superior Courtyard room but were upgraded to a room in the main house, something we greatly appreciated after dinner when we looked out and saw the snow blowing horizontally! The only downside to staying in the house is that as this is a National Trust property conversion of the bedrooms to hotel rooms has had to be done in a manner which does not alter the fabric of the building. On a cold windy night, therefore, the heating can struggle to cope with the enormous single glazed windows.

Dinner starts with drinks and canapes served in the lounge, before guests proceed to the beautiful panelled dining room. The food was beautifully presented and delicious, and the service was impeccable.

Beakfast was cooked to order and delicious. All in all, this hotel is highly recommended for a special occasion.

Room Tip: If you prefer a more modern type of room, the couryard rooms would probably suit you best.

Stayed for one night only as a birthday treat and were not disappointed. Our room in the Courtyard was lovely and warm and very clean, decorated in a traditional style which suited our surroundings. Lovely garden views from both windows. Nice touches such as bottled water and home made biscuits, lovely Crabtree and Evelynn toiletries.

On arrival our luggage was taken to the room by a very friendly male member of staff who gave information on the area and the hotel/grounds/spa facilities.

Our internet deal included early morning tea. Although they forgot about us and I rang reception to query its whereabouts, it was with us within 5 minutes and was brought on a lovely tray with everything you needed.

The spa, although small, had a lovely swimming pool which you could actually swim in rather than just going around in circles like some hotel pools! Was lovely to relax at the end of a bitterly cold and wet day. My only small gripe here was there was only 1 cubicle in which to change so not much privacy but I appreciate this is not feasible due to the space limitations.

As we were not staying in the hotel itself, we did not get to see all the building but there was a lovely drawing room in which we had drinks in the evening and our breakfast was served in a downstairs room as the main breakfasting room was being refurbished I understand

A full yorkshire breakfast was included in our stay and it did not disappoint. Well presented and excellent fresh produce. Also the waitresses were very smart and pleasant, as were all the staff we encountered during our short stay.

Unfortunately the weather over our 2 days was atrocious (end of Feb) but we did have a stroll through the grounds which were lovely and I can only imagine how great they are in the spring and summer months. All in all we had a lovely stay and I would recommend this hotel for anyone wanting to get away from it all in beautiful surroundings and not too far to travel to York centre. We used the park and ride facility at Askham Bar which was only a short drive from the hotel and not too expensive to use.
