three of us stopped 2 nights in no 33 garden cottage and what a gem. we had a single room and a double room, small kitchen area bathroom with a fantastic shower and a sitting room with fabulous old fireplaces and old period furniture. it was warm and very cosy the staff at middlethorpe hall are a+++ nothing is too much trouble. the main building is so warm and inviting and the food delicious we had high tea in the drawing room in front of the fire fantastic value and breakfast was a joy. we could go upto the main building and enjoy what it had to offer or cosy in to our suite and come and go as we please.

Room Tip: if there are 3 of you travelling together and you don't want to be separated and have a space for you to sit and relax in private and catch up then room 33 the cottage suite is brilliant

I booked a room at this hall and spa back in November for my mums 60th birthday. Upon our arrival they announced that they had upgraded us to a room within the hall and not in the courtyard as booked. This absolutely made my mums 60th birthday and the hall itself was like taking a wonderful trip back in time.

The staff were extremely helpful and courteous, the atmosphere relaxing and for 24 hours we forgot about the outside world.

The restaurant was a lovely temperature due to the warmth of the fire and the food, extremely tasty and well presented.

I would highly recommend Middlethorpe Hall and Spa, especially for those special occasions.

What a wonderful hotel! We just stayed 1 night there for our wedding anniversary and we judged it the best hotel we'd stayed in (and probably the most expensive)! The staff were quiet, attentive and very welcoming - I cannot praise them enough. We had the dinner, bed and breakfast deal and couldn't fault the food or the service.
The building itself is interesting and beautifully restored. The bedroom was spacious and comfortable, ours overlooked the extensive lawns and got the morning sun. It was at the top of the building so lots of stairs but there was a small lift if required. Throughout the hotel everywhere was lovely and warm which I found pleasantly surprising with it being such an old building.
There was a bit of road noise from the near-by A64 which we didn't find intrusive in the hotel but we did notice it more when strolling round the grounds.
We used the swimming pool in the Spa and it was a good size. The changing room was a bit small though if there was more than 2 people in it.
I can unreservedly recommend this hotel. We will certainly return.

We stayed in a garden cottage with our two dogs for a three day break in December. The cottage was ideal for our purpose and had a nice small basically furnished sitting room and small kitchen with tea making facilities. It was a short walk up to the main hotel. There are pleasant hotel gardens to walk around, a small lake and the York racecourse just 5 minutes away. The main hotel is a grand building with a lovely lounge and log fire. The menu was adventurous (bit too adventurous for some !) but my daughter loved the chocolate fondant pudding !! The service was slow and we gave up on our doffed on one evening. The manager very helpfully allowed us a late checkout which enabled us visit York before we left. All in all a pleasant stay but expensive and fell short of similar places we have stayed.

Room Tip: Garden cottage good for dog owners but suggest try upstairs as the downstairs room was noisy when people upstair

A lovely Queen Anne building 20 mins by taxi from York, bus service opposite the hotel. Extremely professional staff, and plenty of them. Gorgeous lounge for your pre-dinner aperitif, excellent cuisine with good quantities. The grounds are nice to wander around, the trees majestic against a crisp blue winter sky, secluded benches and a walled garden. The atmosphere of the local aristocracy is well-preserved. I would give it 5 stars if there had been less traffic noise in the garden, breakfast till 11, tea and coffee facilities in the room and if spa treatments had been available between a day out in York and dinner (last treatment at 5pm).Ask the bellboy about the hotel's haunted rooms - it used to be a girls' boarding school.
