“A very Grand building just on the edge of York City. Delightful location”
Reviewed 16 February 2014

We arrived early on the Saturday morning to be told our room wasn't ready yet ( we we're 4 hours early ) one of the staff offered to take our bags and when the room was ready would take them up. He was a very helpful chap with a good knowledge and letting us know about the hotels facilities. Very nice gesture. The lady on reception went onto inform us that we had even upgraded to a superior double room with the grand building, we were very appreciative. This was our 24th wedding anniversary so made it that little extra special. On our return we were given the room key and proceeded to our room. The room was indeed very nice.. A queen bed which was huge... The views from our room were amazing and complimentry fruit and chocolates. We had drinks in the hotel before seeing the sights of york in the evening. Breakfast was very nice a buffet style followed by full English with real tea lol.... No tea bags at this residence. The whole grand staircase with oil paintings and antique furniturewas very quirky. All the hotel staff are amazing and very very helpful over and above. If you want a bit of luxury and class this hotel is for you. Thank you so much to all the staff

We stayed for the weekend and couldn't have had a better, more relaxed time.. The staff are completely professional and efficient as well as pleasant and helpful. The food was, in a word, amazing! well worth the price. A treat not to be missed. The room we had was warm and comfortable. If in York, and want a treat, stay here and you won't be disappointed! Don't miss the spa, it will relax you and recharge you.

Arrived in the rain and immediately the Reception Manager/Duty Manager was there to show us into the reception, which was quick and efficient. A porter came out and took the bags to the room which was a Courtyard twin. The room was warm and welcoming, we requested a tea tray for the room and the porter returned within a few minutes ( note the rooms do not have a Tea & Coffee tray but they are available on request).
Excellent dinner from the al a carte menu, attentive service.
Will be back

We booked a courtyard room ( I did not want to stay in the main building). Upon arrival we were told that we had been upgraded to the main house.....when I asked for the room i had booked we were told it had gone. They thought they were doing us a huge favour, but we wanted what we had booked. . After a lift that resembled the inside of a coffin took us to our room, we were given a luxury double. Now it does state that this is a very traditional hotel, which is fine, but think a glorified B & B and you get the picture. The décor suits the traditional ambience of the place, but it really is geared to the over 70 age group. A bottle of champagne was delivered by way of an apology (we don't drink it), however the thought was there and they couldn't apologise enough to be fair. However we did not get what we had booked and were very disappointed. The bar is none existent, but consists of sitting in a reading chair(? yes, honestly) whilst a drink is brought to you. (£extortionate prices). The staff are superb and the breakfast is ok, but we have stayed in far far better for the price we paid.

Room Tip: If you want old world tradition with absolutely no atmosphere, go for it.

Middlethorpe, General Manager at Middlethorpe Hall & Spa, responded to this review, 15 February 2014
Middlethorpe Hall is a grade II* listed property saved from dereliction and now owned by the National Trust. As well as a curatorship role, our aim is to ensure that all our guests have an enjoyable visit and depart with pleasant memories.

In this instance, we found it rather difficult to empathise with these guests who perhaps booked the wrong type of hotel: we are a traditional country house and do not pretend to be trendy or to have a noisy bar with piped music.

We have rarely, if ever, met guests who so vehemently declined our offer of a complimentary upgrade to a much grander and larger accommodation, and when we were trying to pacify them, rejected our generous goodwill gesture of a complimentary bottle of Champagne.

We are sorry if these guests were disappointed, but consider that such a critical review is unfair and uncalled for.

I simply cannot fault this hotel in anyway.
The service is impeccable, the décor classically elegant and the food (we only had breakfast, unfortunately) was simply wonderful.

My husband and I stayed one Sunday evening late in December. We booked one evenings stay in a stable courtyard room. It was located through the beautiful cobbled courtyard - complete with Christmas tree shimmering with white fairy lights - and up some stairs on the first floor.
These rooms are beautifully decorated, extremely tasteful, with a wonderfully comfortable bed.
In the bathroom you will find a selection of Crabtree & Evelyn Jojoba products. The bathroom has a heated towel rail and underfloor heating so is very cosy. No chilly showers in this hotel!
The underfloor heating runs through the bedroom too. You will never be cold in these rooms.
There are no tea and coffee making facilities in these rooms. If you require a drink, just call reception and before you know it there is a knock at the door and your tray is delivered. Fresh milk is much more preferable to those horrid UHT pots..

The next morning we walked across to the main hotel for our breakfast. We were met at the entrance by the hotel manager, who opened the door and welcomed us in. He took our coats from us and escorted us to the breakfast room.
We then ate the best hotel breakfast we have ever had before. I even indulged and had pancakes and maple syrup to start, followed by the most delicious scrambled egg on brioche.
Husband opted for the full English breakfast and remarkably ate every single bit - unheard of!

After a short walk, we headed over to the spa which was empty. I loved the Jacuzzi and felt really relaxed afterwards, my husband made great use of the pool.

It was with great reluctance that we checked out of our room, which took about a second thanks to the extremely quick checkout process.
We are looking forward to our next visit to York, and will make sure our reservations are made at Middlethorpe Hall.

What a lovely treat, its like a step back in time where service is second to none.

I was lucky enough to be in a suite which was amazing. The room was warm and cosy with home made choccies, grapes and shortbread. Initially there was no tea and coffee making facilities in the room, this was no problem & was rectified.

The best bit was breakfast in bed on sunday morning......................a rare and special treat.

Its not the cheapest hotel but evey girl needs a treat every now and then.................

Easy to get into York (Taxi £8)
