This was our first stay at this National Trust owned hotel. On arrival we received a free upgrade to a room in the main house overlooking the gardens. It was a refreshing change to stay in a period property instead of a modern hotel, yet still offered all the usual amenities, except for tea/coffee making facilities in the room. Although, early morning tea or coffee in the room before breakfast was available. All the staff were friendly and provided an excellent service. The hotel is ideally situated for a visit to York being only a few minutes drive from the city centre. We would definately stay at this hotel again.

The Middlethorpe Hotel is a wonderful find. We had a fabulous time there to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. The suite was beautiful, the grounds were gorgeous and the Spa truly a haven!

On arrival at the hotel we were delighted to find we had been upgraded to a four poster room. The room was large with 3 floor to ceiling windows overlooking delightful gardens. It was just like a period drama setting. The bed was huge and was very very comfortable. We used the swimming pool in the afternoon and staff in the spa were also very polite and helpful. We did not eat in the hotel in the evening as we travelled into York. When we returned we sat in the drawing room and a very helpful member of staff turned the fire up for us and we sat in front of a very large fireplace, on comfy sofas, and drank a good bottle of white wine, chosen from an extensive menu. We were also provided with fresh olives, nuts etc to accompany this.

The breakfast the following morning was excellent and there was a good choice of hot and cold food.

If you are looking for a relaxing break with excellent old fashioned service, this is a great place to experience both. The staff were absolutely wonderful and the service was superb. Highly recommended

Stayed one night in the Garden Suite. This allows a couple and one other to stay. It was like being at home, with a large kitchen and sitting room with dining room. Basics for tea and coffee with fruit provided. Bathroom adequate and clean. There was a smalll courtyard - very private - for those warmer days. Main hotel area were clean and sumptuous as expected. We elected not to eat in the restaurant although breakfast was very good. Nor did we try the spa. All the staff we very courteous and fairly knowledgeable about the hotels past and area. Garden magnificent! Surprised by the welcoming letter from the General manager - hand written - considering I did a walk in booking the previous day. Nice personal touch!
Overall, would return if the same "deal" was available. We will be trying the NT sister hotels in the future!

We stayed at this hotel at the end of March 2009 and had a wonderful romantic weekend. From the moment we approached the door the service was exceptional. We stayed in the main house (room 1) and the decor fits the house style so well. As we were shown to the room we were given a potted history of the house in a friendly, professional manner. We booked dinner and spa treatments straight away and ended up having the sauna, steam room and pool to ourselves in the early evening.

We had pre-dinner drinks in the drawing room and were relieved when the large work party dined separately. Canapes and nibbles were served and then we chose the wine to go with our dinner with the help of the head waiter. The food was excellent quality and beautifully presented.

I would recommend this hotel wholeheartedly

Our second visit here after a gap of one year and it was pleasing to see that the standards have remained so high. We were upgraded to a suite despite arriving (by tandem) clad in sweaty lycra. The suite was lovely, and we visited the spa for a swim and jacuzzi. Our evening meal was excellent, the wine list extensive, the staff friendly and informative.

Best of all, though, was the service. As with our previous visit the welcome was warm and helpful. Every member of staff seemed keen to make sure our stay was an enjoyable one. This is a rare thing in an hotel, and will definitely result in a further visit.

Top marks. A great place.

I stayed for a short break away from the bustle of London, the hotel was everything I imagined it would be and more. A short ride from York town centre and near the race course this Georgian house with authentic features, fittings and furniture in every room and beautifully manicured gardens with a touch of the wildness of York as well as a taste of the modern world in my room (small flat screen TV a and underflow hearting in the bathroom!) was just what I needed. Meals were served in the most beautiful dinning room with helpful and cheerful staff. I even sampled a traditional afternoon tea in the drawing whilst writing letter! I spent relaxing hours in the Spa pool and steam room which were clean and inviting with attentive staff at hand.
