Middlethorpe Hall & Spa
Ranked #2 of 47 Hotels in York
Certificate of Excellence

My girlfriend and I stayed at this hotel one a Christmas shopping break to York. We paid £140 for a standard room in the courtyard block.
Upon arrival we were welcomed by the concierge who showed us around the lounge and restaurant areas before taking us to our room. The room itself was quite small but had a real charming elegance to it.
During our stay we had afternoon tea in the drawing room - both of which were extremely nice; the best bit being the well spoken staff who work in this area.
Breakfast was delightful with every last detail taken care of - try the scrambled egg and smoked salmon.
Overall, a big thumbs up to this hotel for employing the best in the business, for keeping the service levels top notch and for giving my partner and I one of the best hotel stays in a very long time. All hotels could learn a thing or two from Middlethorpe Hall.

Its a shame that some reviews are not time limited. I'd read some of the less flattering comments and approached Middlethorpe with some trepidation. I need not have worried. Many of the 'observations' made I simply found no evidence of.
What i found was a delightful location, stacked to the roof with a style and elegance that I only thought was visiable on a TV or film set. This is perfectly complimented by a staff that have a genuine pride in the establishment and the experience it offers. In the course of our overnight stay I lost count of the number of times I was lost to the splendour of the surroundings, service, dinner and overall impact that Middlethorpe presents to its guests. I can not believe that anyone could stay here now and not leave with a sense of having experienced a stay that will put so many other locations to shame. I, for one, will look forward to my next visit without ANY cause for concern.

We stayed in a fantastic room with four poster bed in the main house. Very quiet, well maintained and spacious room although the bathroom was quite small. The hotel itself is beautiful. We made use of the lovely spa which was perfect. We ate in the restaurant and found the food to be okay but overpriced for what it was. Also, the service was not great: we finished our wine on a few occasions and could not get the attention of any staff to top our glasses up (they had taken the bottle away).

I have just returned from an overnight stay at Middlethorpe Hall with my partner and I have to say that not only did it live up to but it more than surpassed our demanding expectations. We were a little concerned after reading some of the negative reviews on Trip Advisor but those concerns soon evaporated. From the moment we entered the hotel we were treated with the utmost respect and courtesy. From the mini informative tour we were treated to on arrival to our requests for help in taking photographs, nothing it seemed was too much trouble.
On arrival at Middlethorpe Hall we were informed that we had been upgraded to the Four Poster Bedroom in the main house…..and all I can say is WOW!!! Our room was absolutely exquisite, furnished with a glorious four poster bed and some of the most delightful pieces of antique furniture that you could wish for. The rooms beauty was only surpassed by the simply stunning view to be had from the four almost floor to ceiling windows.
We chose to dine at Middlethorpe Hall and the food was without exception delicious. The starter of Roast Pumpkin Risotto simply melted in the mouth, only bettered I have to say by the absolutely mouth watering Black Forest Soufflé – who’s taste was frankly out of this world. The food was plentiful and cooked to absolute perfection. The service was discreet, courteous and professional.
Having the chance to fulfil a dream of being Lady of the Manor was priceless – descending the staircase dressed for dinner on my partners arm was truly enchanting – the stuff of wishes and dreams!.
If you appreciate and enjoy the splendour of sumptuous surroundings, beautiful antique furniture and stunning grounds then you will adore it. Anyone looking to experience superb personal service at a wonderful hotel then Middlethorpe Hall is definitely the place for you.

We found this gem of a hotel whilst searching for places to stay near York on Tripadvisor.

We stayed in room 28 in one of the courtyard rooms and found it to be cosy ,comfortable and everything we wanted for a peacefull 2 day breakaway from the children. The room had a lovely view of the garden, Penhaligan toiletries in the bathroom, and luxurious bathrobes to relax in.

The main house was beautiful, full of antiques with lovely views of the gardens. The staff were welcoming, friendly, helpful and efficient. Michael the concierge who greeted us, instantly made us feel at home, showed us around the house and spa, and then helped us with our luggage.

Francoise the Restaurant manager, made us feel at ease when we sat for dinner, explained the menu and all the excellent wines on offer. He managed a very efficient restaurant. The chef was only too happy to cook an alternative from the menu for my wife - who is a fussy eater!

One of the stars of the hotel was Linda in the breakfast room. She greeted you with a smile and ensured your breakfast was cooked exactly as you liked it. Nothing was too much trouble!
In fact all the staff seemed to want to make sure your stay was perfect.

The Spa although on the small side, provided all the facilties we required. My wife enjoyed two treatments from Kirsty and found the range of treatments on offer excellent. We enjoyed the pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna.

The hotel was well positioned to visit nearby York either by foot(40mins) or by local bus (which stopped just outside the hotel). The surrounding countryside was easily accessible with walks across the racecourse or along the river, just beyond the front gate. The excercise was very welcome after the fantastic Yorkshire breakfast we were offered.

We were so impressed with our visit we purchased vouchers from the hotel for our parents to share the lovely experience.
If you are looking for a relaxing stay in elegant suroundings, top class gastronomy, cared for by friendly staff within easy reach of historical York, you will not find better.

My husband and I have just spent three nights at this super hotel. We were in need of a touch of TLC and Middlethorpe provided just that. It isn't the cheapest of hotels but for a calm elegant but relaxed break it proved to be worth the money. Our room, in the hotel, was beautifully furnished and clean; the bed roomy and very comfortable and 'proper' tea served in your room each morning. Restaurant staff were attentive without being overbearing and the food was excellent. The wine seemd rather pricey. The hotel is close to the centre of York. We weren't troubled by the busy road which is close by. Use the Park and Ride into town rather than paying high parking fees in town. We used the local bus one day but this was more expensive than the Park and Ride. We didn't use the spa. Well placed for driving up to the moors, Scarborough, Whitby etc.

We have never come across a better combination of service (friendly very wiiling pleasant and efficient), comfort (spacious well equpped rooms), food (excellent), wine (good affordable), and a lovely park .
The one slight, and I emphasise slight, downside was the busy road - some distance away but too near for total peace unless you were in one of the courtyard rooms.
