We spent one night here, we were very stressed and exhausted when we arrived having just moved out of our house. We were upgraded to a room in the house. This hotel knows exactly what is needed for your comfort. Lovely big robes, spotless bathroom, loads of fluffy towels, gorgeous bed and high quality sheets. Very pleasant waiting staff. Candlelit dining room. An evening turn down service which makes you feel very pampered as all your towels are replenished, the curtains drawn and the super comfy bed looks so inviting. The menu is not cheap but you get what you pay for in this world. I would highly recommend this hotel and if you need to re-charge your batteries, this is the place.

We have travelled extensively and have to say that this is the best hotel we have ever stayed at. We were upgraded from a superior courtyard room to a suite with sitting room, two bathrooms, walk in closet and a super-king sized bed. The robes and towels were extra fluffy and the sitting room was an added bonus.

What impressed us most of all was the service. The staff took the trouble of calling you by name and remembering what your preferences were. They were there whenever you needed them but in a friendly and respectful manner. They could not be faulted and we are very grateful to them for enhancing our experience of this fantastic hotel.

Most of the time were had the lovely pool to ourselves and were there several times during our two night stay.

We would definitely make a point of going back to this hotel. It restored our spirits after the long winter months and we came home totally refreshed.

Just returned from two night mid-week break. I highly recommend this Country House hotel in York. Comfort, surrounded by history and antiques. The food is top class with a superb wine list, but is reflected in the cost. Expect £50 for three courses plus wine per head. Large grounds to wander in and my wife was delighted with the spar adjoining.

Booked a standard room in the courtyard for 2 nights on a special half price rate. On arrival we were upgraded to a room in the main house with lovely views over the gardens. The room was excellent! Very comfortable. Robes, slippers. Bottled water which was replenished each day.
The staff were helpful and friendly and we were made to feel very welcome.
Had an excellent treatment in the spa and felt very pampered!
Could not have asked for anything more - excellent value, relaxing, staff couldnt do enough for us.

Used Taxi first night but bus stop at top of drive, on main road, takes you right into town.

The previous comments about this hotel are spot on. The hotel is truly wonderful! Very picturesque setting with the hotel itself being very warm and welcoming. Stayed in one of the courtyard rooms and was not disappointed. The antique furniture and décor may not be to everyone's taste but it is certainly presented very well. Me and my partner are in our 20s and we did not feel out of place at all.

Porter carried our bags to our rooms, on the way he explained everything about the hotel and its facilities. Once we were settled we went for an evening meal in the hotel's elegant restaurant. Its a bit pricey for what your get (£110 for the both of us) but the food is absolutely top notch. I cannot say just how wonderful the service was. The sheer volume of staff they constantly have at the hotel is incredible! Room service is excellent as well, catering to our every request!

The spa is very clean and well looked after. It is right next door to the hotel. We basically had the whole place to ourselves when we went as it was pretty quiet due to the weather.

Recommend this hotel to anyone, especially couples!

What could I complain about.... I turned the shower on and got doused in cold water. (solution - keep you head out of the way next time dope!)....the bath wasn't quite long enough (Well I am over 6ft tall).....The windows were a bit draughty (what do you expect from 17c sash windows....and pulling the curtains worked a treat!).....mmm that's about it!!
Middlethorpe Hall and all the great fires everywhere (including our room) made for a warm and relaxing weekend that exceeded expectations from the minute we arrived to the time we left......and after when the hotel kindly called to let us know they were sorry that had not been able to find our missing reading glasses.
This hotel is not for everyone but if you love good old fashioned service with a smile in historic surroundings you would have to travel far and wide to beat Middlethorpe Hall.

This hotel deserve's all the praise it as been given in previous reviews. We stayed for 1 night on the 2nd January and on arrival we were taken to our room in the main house, for some reason they had up graded us and we were taken to room 9 which had a 4 poster bed and sitting area. Everything was so classy and every need had been catered for.
We ate in the dining room at night and the food and service were 1st class. The lounge area is very comfy but do agree with a previous reviewer that it would have been nice to see a proper fire rather than gas effect one's.
If you drive to Askam Bar Park n Ride 5 minutes away there is no need to drive into York and should you have a bus pass then it is free.
