My wife and I had a room for a night in the courtyard, set about 50m from the main entrance the hotel. Our room was on the first floor, or what was (perhaps?) formally the loft space.

The décor was traditional. The pitch of the roof and small windows meant the room didn't feel that light and spacious. The en suite had other period fittings, which were looking a little tired and were well worn.

Breakfast was filling and served promptly. All the staff we dealt with were faultlessly polite.

We came away just feeling a little disappointed overall, however, asking ourselves 'Was that it?' Given the Hotel class and the nightly rate, our expectations hadn't been met.

From arrival to departure the staff could not have been more helpful at this splendid hotel. Situated in extensive grounds with lovely views it is beautifully furnished and very comfortable with a restful feel and excellent food.

As always, had a most enjoyable stay at Middlethorpe. Booked last minute for a one night stay in a superior room, to find located in suite . . . a lovely bonus! Accommodation, food and service excellent - nothing is too much trouble; staff fully support the Middlethorpe ethos, ensuring customers have a relaxing and most comfortable stay. Invoice was slightly inaccurate, however, quickly rectified without any fuss. Although on this occasion did not have lunch - always thoroughly enjoy the 3 course lunch for the price of 2 . . . excellent value . . . and would be very sorry to see this special offer go! Great to take a walk in the gardens and interesting to discover several vegetable and herbs enjoyed at dinner the previous night!

Our second stay here and if anything even better than the first time.
Nothing is too much trouble for the members of staff and the whole place has a lovely atmosphere - not at all stuffy.

I stayed here for a long weekend with my other half and we had a wonderful time. The hotel and grounds are very pretty and relaxing and staff very helpful. We only used the swimming pool in Spa which was very nice although there seemed to be a bit of resentment (in the form of overt and snide remarks) from the members about hotel guests using the facilities.

The location was ideal as it is just outside the city centre but close to places you can go for a nice walk.

We didn't eat in the restaurant as we are vegetarian and whilst it did have a vegetarian dish on the menu it didn't really appeal.
