“Dirty, depressing poor service”
Reviewed 18 April 2012

I was very disappointed with the hotel room. Carpets were filthy with stains on them and duvet had blood on it. Hotel was so noisy that we hardly slept and the mattress was wafer thin. Cheap Ikea furniture and no drawers or dressing table. No heating except a fan heater that was broken. Tea bags provided were revolting. Wi fi was £5 for 24 hour's.

This one is a shocker! I booked a rom for 2 and found myself in an army barracks for 4 with creaky floors and banging doors. Renovation is probably too late and detonation is due now. As usual with Ibis they wanted £10 per day for wi-fi even though it's free in the city of York and at every Wetherspoons Hotel. The staff were good and the carpark free, but it's a long walk to the centre of the walled city and shopping centre.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else

I am disappointed to hear that you didn't enjoy your stay. I am sorry that you found your room to have creaky floor boards and I will look into this matter with urgency.

I am sorry if you have been given the wrong information about internet charges in the hotel. Should you stay with us in the future your would be able to use the WIFI in the hotel at a charge of £5 for 24 hours or the media package (broadband, movie package and music) for £9.99 for 24 hours.

Thank you for your kind words regarding the staff at Ibis York who also try to go the extra mile for every guest.

Thanks for taking the time to leave your feedback.

I'm happy to hear that you had a good stay.

Being a budget hotel we do only supply shower gel and soap in the rooms, so as you mentioned you may want to bring your own toileteries with you. We do find that a lot of our guests would prefer to pay a budget price and use their own toileteries which means they have more to spend in our beautiful city.

I am sorry to hear that you were dissapointed with our breakfast and we are always looking to improve our service, if there is any way you think we could improve on our breakfast please feel free to contact me directly.

We look forward to welcoming you back for your base when visiting York.

Booked 2 nights for £120 inc breakfast. Not a bad price you may think. Well it is a budget hotel, however they really did keep a tight budget on the basics!!

We have stayed in Travel Lodge and Premier Inn and you get a lot more bang for your bucks.
Let’s make it clear why we are unhappy.

1) The web site for Ibis York clearly sates “iron in room”. Actually there is no iron in the room just an ironing room!! This is a small room (see photo’s attached). The fact you have to take your clothes to a specific room makes this feel like a hostel and god knows what this is like at the weekend when the hotel is probably at full occupancy. If they had made it clear there was no “iron in the room” then we would have brought our own.
2) They have spent a lot on the bar area, including secondary glazing to cut the road noise levels down, but they have failed to do the same for the bedrooms, which meant 2 nights of my girlfriend and I wearing ear plugs....how very sexy!!
3) Storage – or a severe lack of it. Yet again Travel Lodge and Premier Inn provide ample storage including drawers to put your small stuff in, knickers, pants and other girly stuff in. After all you don’t know who the cleaners are and you don’t want them seeing your smalls. (Again see photos attached). In fact you only get 5 open shelves to put your clothes on.
4) The bed – my god!!! How hard can it be, well so hard and firm it’s ludicrous. The mattress is basically a large hard foam block, no springs, nothing!!
5) The blood!!! Yes blood. On the duvet, not very nice at all, have they not heard of cleanliness??
6) The doors, why do they have to be set up so that they bang closed so loudly, does the management expect the customers to close them gently?
7) Lastly the staff. 90% of them never smiled, never seemed happy to serve you and on check out we were not even asked if we enjoyed out stay. Even if they wanted to avoid confrontation they could have at least said “Thank you for staying hope to see you again.
8) The car park, now they actually do say there is limited car parking spaces, but for a hotel of approx 60 rooms there are only about 20 car parking spaces so you’ll have to pay £5 for parking down the road.

The goods points are:
1) It is very close to the town gates although about 15-20 mins to the town centre.
2) For £30 per person per night inc breakfast is a good deal, not the greatest fry up in the world but enough to set you up for the day.
3) Ummmm!!!

We can’t make it any more factual than that.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the back of the hotel because this is the new build without wooden floors and take...

I am really sorry to hear that your stay wasn’t up to expectations.
I have noted your comments about the web page giving the wrong information about irons in the rooms, this has been passed on to the relevent team and i apologise for the misleading information.
The older widows in the hotel are being relaced this year which will cut down on the noise from outside. Being a grade 2 listed building we have had to wait for planning permission to replace them.
I'm sorry on this occation you found the storage inadequate for your stay.
The Ibis beds are of a standard style, and you will find the same beds in most Ibis hotels whether it be here in the UK or in Europe. Mattress comfort tends very much to be a matter of personal preference, and I am sorry that it was not to your liking.
There is no excuse for having stains on the bedding and I have passed this comment to the housekeeping team who will carry out re training with all the team.
I'm sorry you found staff to be unfriendly, this is not the image we want to leave guests with.

If you would like to chat to me about your stay please feel free to contact me directly.
Again I am am sorry that you have been left dissapointed with your stay.

Maybe a bank holiday weekend was not the best time to visit York. We had a double room on the first floor. 102 to be exact. It's on the side of the building so not a lot of noise from outside but inside was a bit different. There was a lot of door banging late at night, and inconsiderate guests coming in at 2 in the morning shouting and singing, which I can't blame on either the hotel or the staff, but on top of that, the floor boards are very squeaky. We could hear every move made by the people in the room above and I'm sure the same can be said for those below us, as our floor was just as noisy.

The room itself was basic, but very clean, although we weren't sure if the carpet was dirty or it was a dirty looking pattern. Whatever it was, it spoiled the rest of the room. The bathroom was lovely, the shower was great and there was always lots of hot water. We didn't find the bed very comfortable, it was quite hard as were the pillows, but the duvet was lovely and warm. The room itself was cold, but we did have an oil heater, which we used as well as a blow heater. The room was cleaned and the towels were changed, every day. Tea, coffee, sugar and milk were replenished every day.

The bar and lounge area are lovely. Very bright and warm. There are two large TVs which are on all the time, but without sound. Might be a good idea just to put the subtitles on. The seating in this area is very comfortable.

We had breakfast every morning (4 days) and it was very good. There is a hot selection, bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs and beans as well as a continental selection. There are branded cereals and a huge selection of breads. All in all breakfast is well worth the money.

We found all the staff to be very welcoming and helpful, from the cleaning staff upwards, but we must give a special mention to Alvaro in the bar, Nicola on Reception and Helen who we think was a manager, as well as the girls who were doing the catering in the mornings.

The hotel is in a convenient position. It's within walking distance (even with luggage) from the railway station and it took us (OAPs) about 20 minutes to walk to the racecourse. The city centre is probably less than 15 minutes away. There are lots of places to eat and drink within easy distance as are most of York's attractions.

We were in two minds about using a budget hotel, but after experiencing the Ibis we would recommend it to anyone who asked, and yes, we would use it again, but we would ask for the newer part of the hotel where the floorboards are likely to be less noisy.

Room Tip: The Ibis is on a busy main road so ask for a room at the back or side of the building or for a room...

Thank you for taking the time to post your review on trip advisor.

We welcome all feedback that we receive from our guests, including positive comments which help us to recognise and reinforce excellent service within the team.

I have my night team to check the corridors more frequently when guests are returning to their rooms late at night so that we can reduce the noise for guests that are sleeping. So thank you for bringing this issue to my attention.

I would hope to welcoming you back to see us at Ibis York.

Hotel does not have enough car parking for people who have arrived by car. Better off going out of town for less money than paying car park fees!! Especially for a 3/4 day stay.
Rooms: Carpets are filthy too but bathrooms ok.

Thank you for taking the time to veview our hotel.

I am sorry that on this occasion you were disappointed with the car parking at the hotel. I can understand your frustration at having to use a public car park during your stay, but being a city centre hotel we unfortunatly do not have the means to expand our car parking facilities. Our reception team are always happy to advise on the cheapest car park in the area, which is avalible at £5.00 for 24 hours.

I apologise if you found the carpet in your room dirty and I will pass on your comments about the carpet in your room to the housekeeping team.

We would like to take the opertunity to welcome you back in the future for a hassle-free stay.
