“A rather run down Ibis, in not the best part of town.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 August 2014

Not one of Ibis' better properties. The positives are that the ground floor public areas (restaurant / Bar) are in good condition, there is a reasonable amount of free parking at the rear of the hotel (but it fills up quickly and it cannot be reserved) and finally, the staff are friendly and helpful.

The downsides make up a somewhat longer list, being:
- The rest of the hotel need refurbishment, in particular the carpets are so dirty, they are beyond the point that they should be thrown away.
- The air cooling / heating system in the room (Note: not air conditioning according the the notice in the room) didn't work, so a few stuff nights were spent, as the window couldn't be opened as it has been painted shut, though even if it could be opened, the traffic and revellers (see more below) on the road outside would have made sleeping impossible.
- The shower was just about the worst I have ever come across in a hotel and I have seen a few. No water came out in a trickle and around every 20 seconds the water would become scalding hot, before returning the the temperature selected.
- The hotel says it offers evening meals. Possibly, but not on the evenings I stayed.
- I don't know about the rest of York, but the road from the hotel into the centre of York was full of binge drinking and noisy revellers each evening. Judging by the number of police out and about and the light van triving around with a large digital display on the back asking the locals not too dirnk too much and consider the consequences, perhaps binge drinking in the evening is a something of a problem in these parts.

All in all, not a great

Room Tip: Pick another hotel.

Thank you for your positive comments, regarding the public areas, parking and the team.
I am however dissapointed to hear that you found negitives during your time with us.
We are working hard with the housekeeping team to look into if any of our carpets need to be replaced. I have had no other reports of there being an issue with the air cooling system or water temperature during your stay, but will insure that the maintenance engineer fully investigates these issues you found.
We have a 24 hour snack menu at the hotel and evening meals, I am unsure as to why these were not available to you and will follow up with the food & beverage team to ensure that every guest has this option available to them.
In York we do not generally have an issue with binge drinking on the streets, unlike some other major cities, however the period you stayed at the hotel was during the busiest race meeting of the year, where some visitors to the city can get into the spirit of the horse racing a little too much. The local police force are aware of this fact hence the reasoning behind an increased visibility of the police in the city to detour from any increase disturbances in the city.
Thank you once again for your comments, which can only help us to improve the service we provide.

We stayed there for a weekend, the staff was very friendly and helpful, they gave us a bigger room when we said we had our dog with us. Very well located, 5-10 minites walk from the city centre. If you have a dog we strongly recommend it also because it is located near a park where you can walk your pet

6 of us were there for the races and in fancy dress sounds like a joke, a jockey, frenchman , umpalumpa, hippy, writer and scouser! Made very welcome by staff who were very helpful and friendly. Rooms fine for our needs and bar good , breakfast was good and plenty of choice.
Rooms could do with a bit of a paint but at this price and location not a big problem.
Staff attitude great.

Thank you for your review. I am slightly dissapointed that I was not on shift to see you all walking through the door!
I am pleased to hear your feedback regarding the team and your breakfast and hope that we can be part of your future plans when visiting the city.

This hotel is lovely, it's situated just outside the city walls. It's staff are friendly and helpful. The rooms are large and very comfortable. It is very near the train station and a short walk to the shops and centre of town. Would definitely stay here again.

I'm not a huge fan of this chain, but stayed here for two nights when visiting York Races (wonderful!). It's well located and, as other reviewers have mentioned, it's an easy ten minutes from the station/Rail Museum and, in the other direction, the racecourse, and a bit more to the Minster, via the shopping. There are no frills to this chain's properties. The rooms are adequate (no bath though) and clean - and the bed is comfortable. Bathrooms are small, with ghastly plastic glasses (both of mine were broken - though quickly replaced. The rooms upstairs (there are only three room floors) are quiet, though the walls are paper thin - not recommended for honeymooners! Breakfast was OK. The hotel is too hot and the aircon is better at getting the temperature up than down. A big plus is the staff attitude. Mostly young and mostly female, they are invariably cheerful, efficient and eager to help. Don't expect atmosphere, but nearby pubs and restaurants are good and plentiful.

Room Tip: Even numbered rooms on the third floor have a view of the Minster.

Thank you for your feedback. I am pleased to see that we may have changed your opinion of ibis Hotels. I agree with your comment that we 'do what it says on the tin' the majority of our guests do find us to be a no frills base to explore the city.
I hope you continue to chose ibis hotel for any future plans you may have.
