Stayed one night 19/8/12. Very nice place to stay, staff excellent, beakfast extensive, nice dining and sitting out areas. Handy for parking car up and using buses into York. Also situated nicely for Designer Shopping Ouitlet. Room compact but nice and in good order - bathroom quite large - bath larger than average. Good place for "smokers" - attractive covered sitting out area for this. Beakfast was good and dining room managed by friendly head waiter. Fruit juices, fruit, yogurts, cakes, cold meats, cereals, toast, pots of tea or coffee, coffee machine for nespressor type coffees, full english tailored to your preferences, most types of egg, smoked salmon, kippers etc. Will definetly use this hotel again. Car park was large - but could possibly get congested when functions are on - but plent of road parking also. Fans and hairdryers and flat screen tvs in rooms. Rooms well maintained.

Do not eat at the Plough Pub nearby. Had a meal there because it was recomended by other reviewers, but it was the worse in 40 years. Over-cooked fish and soggy chips. But beer was OK.

Room Tip: We got a special rate of £41 for the night for a double including breakfast and booked on line. Pres...

Checked in the hotel today 19th of August and we are predicted to stay one more night. Upon arrival the sraff were very helful and friendly, on our way to our room though morale fell signifucantly. There were quite a lot of steps and a little staircase leading to the room we were allocated. Word of advice: do not have too much to drink if you get the same room. The steps are in great need of TLC and they are creaking like there's no tomorrow. The room was very clean and tidy but it is so HOT!!! If you are a hormonal woman who sleeps with a fan even in January DO NOT attempt to sleep in this hotel. We asked for a room change but we were told that the hotel was full so that would not be possible. You cannot fault the staff however, they brought a huge fan upstairs bless them! It seems to be working well and window is open but still burning up unfortunately :(. All in all, goid value for money even with the aforementioned issues...

Booked 3 nights (11 - 13th August) B&B via Best Western website - total cost £165.00
Double room on the small side but very clean, excellent shower by the way and everything we needed - our attitude was we're only sleeping in it!! Who goes away to sit in a hotel room!!
Ample parking and the hotel is situated a bus ride (every 10mins) away from the city center - bus stop straight across the road - what more could you ask for!!
On arrival we were greeted warmly and without any problems - the general manager even took pity on the weary travelers and brought us a drink - free gratis!! It's the little things that count!!
Dined in on the first night and really enjoyed our meal. Breakfast each morning was a vast array - all tastes catered for and over seen by the delightful Wael who made the mornings and deserves a big pat on the back - general manager take note!!
Overall a successful and enjoyable stay in a lovely elegant building made possible by an excellent team. Well done and thankyou- we will return!!

I booked this hotel through super breaks. I would not recommend this hotel , our room 15 was up winding stairs then more stairs then more stairs, this is an old hotel with no lifts and no airconditioning. Our room was small with one small window we had to,wedge the sash window open with some books. Would be dangerous for children. The hotel is set just of a very busy noisy main road. With poor parking facilities, there was two weddings this weekend so the hotel, was very full. We were not bothered by noise from this as we were away form the reception area but could imagine rooms above the reception rooms would be noisy.

We did not get fresh towels and a wet bath mat was not replaced , thought this was very poor. The bed was quite comfortable but the pillows too soft. The decor was ok and the room clean

Breakfast was good with a choice of hot food served from waitress service. The waitress ws helpful, and friendly. We chose to eat tdinner one night poor value and not tht great food. I chose the smoked almond started which came as one very thin see through small piece of salmon with a bit of dressing.
There is very poor Wifi throughout the hotel and the only time we were able to get connected was in the breakfast room next to the reception.I was advised the wifi had been rebooted on several, occasions but it was impossible to log on.

It costs around £8 to get into York by taxi.

Room Tip: If you have any probelms with mobility than request a ground floor room and away from the front of t...

Stayed here last Saturday. Found the hotel very easily. Unfortunately there were no spaces in the car park due to a wedding at the hotel, but car was fine parked on the roadside.

Check in was done in a matter of seconds. We were allocated room 11 which was a standard double.....it felt like we were heading up to the attic up some narrow stairs, but this didn't really bother us.

Room was clean, bed was comfortable, extra pillows in wardrobe, a few toiletries, tea and coffee, flatscreen tv.......also had a fan/heater in the wardrobe which came in very handy as it was quite warm in the room.

Purpose of our visit was to see a band playing in York, and it only cost £6.50 in taxi to be dropped off right in the centre, which therefore made our stay cheaper than if we had booked a town centre hotel, paid for overnight parking, and then separate breakfast (which we have done in the past)......... and this was a nicer hotel!!!

Breakfast was a pleasant experience in the morning. Large selection of cereals/fruits/yoghurts/etc which you can help yourself to, and a full english breakfast by waiter service. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Checking you had everything you needed and that it was ok, but without being intrusive. Also, on a sunday, breakfast served until 10.30am, which was great as we'd had quite a late night!!

Will definitely be staying here again next time we visit York......and have already recommended to friends/family. Overall a very clean and well organised hotel, at a very reasonable price :)

Room Tip: next time we will book a deluxe room if the price difference isn't too much, as the ones I saw l...

We stopped in 'The Chinese Room' or room 47 as it was also known! The Chinese theme in the room consisted of a few Chinese pictures and a Chinese boat on top of a wardrobe. The room was a deluxe one - giving you a higher standard of decor, more room and a large bed. Well worth the little extra money. The room felt clean and fresh, although on the wall mounted feature headboards there was a large collection of dust/fluff, and also on the Chinese boat residing on top of a dusty wardrobe. Apart from this the room was spotless. All bedding was immaculate, and the ensuite (which included a bath) was also immaculate - both areas where you really want cleanliness. Flat screen tv, useful guide books for York, and toiletries were all very welcome. We were attending a wedding, so we also experienced the food at a function. All of it was of a high quality and served perfectly. All staff were polite, professional and very efficient. Managers also were on hand to make sure everyone was doing their job, and ensured all clients were happy.
Our room was above the dining room/function room and noise could be heard - but as we were the last to party.. That didn't matter to us.
The breakfast was cleanly produced and used local sausages, and was again a high standard, although the frozen, fried hash browns could have been homemade. Somewhere of a high standard as this hotel is - you expect a little more detail from the breakfast. Service again was excellent.
We had originally booked directly with the hotel using the wedding party discount, however, we soon found out we could save a lot by booking on the net through Late Rooms. I rang the hotel who were happy to cancel my original booking, and then rebooked online! As well as saving money this way, we also upgraded to the deluxe room and added breakfast!!
Another couple had been booked into the Frankie Howerd room.. Decorated in pictures of him! They didn't like him staring down at them all of the time! So I guess some themed rooms might not appeal to everyone.
We really enjoyed our stay there, and would consider using the hotel again - but would probably check to see if any weddings or functions were booked.. As we did all seem take over the place!
Full credits to ALL of the staff who made our stay so pleasant.
