“WiFi Woes”
Reviewed 26 January 2013

Its a great hotel and the staff are very helpful.... but don't expect the WiFi to work in your room. The system is completely hopeless. It must drive the staff to distraction, but of course they are too polite to say so. So, if you are there on business and need to stay connected your only choice is to make for the bar, where it does seem to work.

Best Western Pavilion – York

I stayed for two nights in room 35 which was clean and spacious. There was a LCD TV with freeview, sitting on a long table allowing ample workspace for laptop & documents. Wi-fi connected easily, and found to be relatively fast. Hairdryer, alarm clock and electric fan were also included as was kettle with beverages and two cups & saucers. There were ample electric sockets for all appliances.

Room also had ample space in wardrobe with eight matching hangers and several shelves. There was also adequate draw-space in each of the bedside tables and beneath the long table.

Bathroom was well lit with large mirror, WC, basin, bath & shower. Toiletries were a nice touch but tissues box on wall was found to be empty. Ample soft, thick white towels were provided.

All bed linen was clean and smelt fresh. The pillows were very soft so some guests may find that two aren’t enough. There are more pillows in the wardrobe.

Restaurant evening menu was limited and in my view expensive - £12.95 for scampi, fries, tartar sauce and salad. Early bird offer on from 5.30 to 7pm with two courses for a similar price.

I had a problem on the first morning – tried running a bath at 6am but no hot water. I phoned reception to report the problem (manned 24 hours a day by staff from 7am – 11pm then covered by night porter) but phone rang out then went dead after a minute or so. So I boiled the kettle for a wash instead. I tried running bath again around 6.20am – water just barely warm. I asked the receptionist at 7.20am after breakfast if hot water only came on after 6am. She offered to look into it and suggested there may be a problem that morning. My second morning saw hot water around 6am so the concern might have been addressed.

Breakfast is served from 7am each weekday. Full English breakfast consists of slice of bacon, one sausage (menu says sausages), baked beans, tomato, mushrooms, black pudding, one hash brown (menu says hash browns) and choice of fried, scrambled or poached egg. I asked for two sausages on my second morning – no problem. There was a good continental selection with a range of juices and cereals.

I had no problems parking on site, though the car park was covered in snow and was rather slippery due to the recent snow falls.

Would I stay again? Quite possibly.

Stayed here for a family party. Could not fault the service, food and friendliness of the staff. Although the hotel is part of Best Western chain it is privately owned and the owners have spent a great deal of time and put a lot of thought into the re-vamping of the hotel. Each room has been given a name - we were in Cousin Sylvia's room! We can highly recommend this hotel - especially welcome were the cosy lounges with log fires and comfy settees, especially on a cold snowy weekend. Ideal place for a party, wedding or a treat.

Every member of staff we met was friendly, enthusiastic and willing to help. Truly the most impressive group of staff we've ever come across in hotels. The hotel is full of character and charm with a real family run feel to it. Good food, comfortable rooms and lovely log fires in the lounge and dining room. Brilliant !

We have a small 5 star hotel in rastrick, west yorkshire and expect high standards when we stay away.
The York Pavilion meets our high expectations in every way
We stay twice every year and my wife returns for several days with her mother
Rooms are excellent and well kept and cleaned.
Staff are very friendly and helpful and go out of their way to be so - well done to management for staff training
Breakfast is freshly cooked to order with a good choice of starters and main courses
There are comfortable lounges and bar area with wi-fi -free- throughout the hotel
Location is 5 minutes car journey from York and the same to the designer shopping centre
We look forward to our next visit

Just returned from a three night stay at this lovely hotel!
What can I say the room we stayed in was called the Scarborough room and had a large comfy bed which was very warm and perfect for the cold weather! The bathroom had a very good shower and the room and bathroom were a excellent standard and cleaned daily!
The food was fantastic we ate in the hotel every night and there was a large choice of food to pick from, we had something different every night and enjoyed it all! Breakfast was great again a fantastic continental menu to choose from and also cooked breakfast aswell!
The staff were very friendly and nothing was to much trouble for them!
In summary we had a great stay and would definatly stay in this hotel again and recommended it in the future!

This review is about the Best Western York Pavilion Hotel Apartments rather than the hotel itself. The only part of the hotel i used was the reception, bar and restaurant. Trip Advisor will not allow a separate entry for these apartments so here goes..............

it was an odd experience to roll up at what i thought was a very nice Best Western Hotel be served by a friendly charming and polite receptionist, booked in and then told to cross the road to what looked like a house! It turned out to be a series of apartments. Mine was a one bed roomed affair on the ground floor. It was comfortable to a degree, very clean but very cold. It didn't feel very welcoming.

The room was comfortable, the bed was nice and the shower was of a good quality but it just didn't feel right. I am not really sure why the hotel has these rooms. perhaps they are to let on a long term basis or to offer a base for tourists over the summer. It didn't seem to fit with the Best Western brand.

I was staying for few nights for business and it all felt very odd. It was like i had borrowed a mates flat for a few days while he was away! I wonder if there was a mistake in their booking system?

Everything in the en suite kitchen was very clean but as my rate was ,essentially, a hotel room and meal rate i ate in the hotel which was very nice indeed. Service was fantastic and the food was very nicely cooked. There was a good range of dishes on the menu and the bar had a good choice of drinks. Breakfast was also good but not as good as the evening meal.

The apartment was decent enough, just a bit cold, a bit soulless and a little bit strange. The hotel looked nice mind!

Many thanks for your compliments and praise for our dining room, staff and service.

Ten years ago, it was the fashion for hotels to provide apartments for guests who required a high degree of privacy, or who were staying for a few days.

I apologise that we did not meet your expections with regard to your room, but would invite you to come and stay with us again in the future and experience the main hotel.

With many thanks
