“Great Hotel”
Reviewed 10 June 2012

The Marriott is just right, the location is excellent the staff are friendly and capable. the rooms are good large and clean with excellent beds. the breakfast is spot on and when we needed extra places they pushed tables together for us, even though the restaurant was very busy. nothing was too much trouble. Would definetly stay here again and recommend the hotel to friends and family. It was a pleasure to stay here.

This was a stop on a drive from Edinburg to London, due to hold ups and bad weather with a break for lunch at the Metro centre in Gatehead that took over 5 and a half hours so the Marriott was a welcome sight.

As normal the check in was smooth and friendly, the room spacious, clean and comfortable.
We ate in the restaurant, the food was nice but overpriced but that is the case in any hotel.

We liked it and would stay again.

Staying at the hotel long term and have no complaints. It is located slightly out of town, about £5 or £6 in a cab or a 15-20 minute walk. Right on the race track so it obviously is perfect for race days/weekend. The rooms are ok, nothing special but spotless. The food is good, I wont go into it in too much detail because when you stay somewhere for a long time you get really bored of the menu regardless how good it is. The staff are excellent and more that willing to help. I would recommend it to anyone.

Stayed 4 nights in a Grandstand Room. Room very good, large, fridge, nice bathroom with bath and seperate shower, excellent views over the race course. Huge bed, very comfortable.

Bar area - poor, very small.
Pool - very small, didn't bother but good for families / kids.
Breakfast - standard, but no cheese / cold meats - never seen this before.
Restaurant - didn't try it, expensive.
Location - easy to find, walkable into York - just, about 2 miles to centre, 40 mins walk. Bus Stop outside, £2 adult into city centre single trip.

If we came to York again we'd stay nearer the city centre, now we know the area.

Room Tip: Grandstand Room a little more expensive, but get a balcony with great views over the racecourse.

We stayed for 1 night (Friday) as a couple. We paid £99 including breakfast which we thought was really good. We used Trivago to find the deal and although the Marriott website do the same rate, expedia via trivago do 12% cashback.
The hotel is a bit dated on the outside and the grounds need a sort out, although the inside is very plush and usual high quality finish you expect from Marriott. (Some new garden furniture on the lawn is desperately needed and some nice umbrellas would make a big improvement).
The beds are very comfortable and the room was spacious, having a separate bath and shower cubicle. Our room was in the old part but there are many rooms in an annexe which look like a nursing home from the outside, although i'm sure are very nice inside.
There is a bus stop outside the hotel which we used to go into York, and got a taxi back (about £6).
We didn't eat at the hotel, (we always go to Stonegate Yard when we visit York, good food, good atmosphere in a leafy courtyard) but breakfast was very good. Eggs cooked to order by separate chef at the servery. No black pudding unfortunately. Bar usual high hotel prices, £11.40 for 2 standard glasses of shiraz. A bit annoying when the Bar staff happily corked a bottle for a couple they had bought from the supermarket free of charge!
Overall, worth the £99 but really not worth much more.

Room Tip: De luxe rooms are a good option, but you can upgrade to the next level for £30 on arrival.

We stayed here before a few years ago and were not disappointed by our return trip. Even though we arrived early, the staff were welcoming and efficient and our room was ready. Bags were unloaded from our car and taken upstairs for us while we went to explore York. The room was large and very clean. So, ok, it's showing it's age but very gracefully and with character. Even though the hotel was hosting two tour buses at the same time we were there, we always received the best personal attention. Our dinner waitress in particular was excellent, to our every request she responded 'of course' and we were charmed.

We stayed here with a tour group. We had a corner room which was very large, Spent some time in the outdoor lounge admiring the beautiful lawns with the racetrack in the background. Breakfast was lovely with eggs cooked to order. Staff was very friendly and accomodating.

Room Tip: We had a corner room on the first floor. It was very large (nice!) but overlooked the parking lot.
