“Ideas (and prices) above its station”
Reviewed 21 October 2013

This place is totally overpriced for the standard of accommodation. We were given an accessible room on the ground floor, so perhaps these rooms are used less often but one of the towels was dirty and the tables/surfaces/chair backs were covered in dust. I went to the desk immediately and reported this, and they came straight away with clean towels. But no attempt was made to dust the room and when we came back the next day after housekeeping had been, there were still dusty surfaces (apart from the ones I dusted myself).

The room was really in need of revamping, with a mouldy shower curtain, a broken tap, and no towel rail (just the fixtures where one had been). Our accommodation was in no way 4 star.
When we checked out, I mentioned the cleanliness and they said they would feed that back, but they said that when I reported it on check in, so maybe they don't bother with these rooms as a rule.

I think the rate we paid (£119 room only) was vastly overpriced for the accommodation. It's only really convenient for the racecourse, so no point staying here if it's the centre of York you want to see.

The final insult is the wifi. £6 per hour or £16 per day for wifi use. I can't believe anyone pays it and it's disgraceful that any hotel still tries to charge for this in 2013. We clearly got a bad rate, and I think it's only worth looking at if you get a really cheap rate

After a time we decided to take a couple of days just to chill out, having been to the hotel for training courses we thought it would be ideal, plenty of parking not too far from the city but far enough away to be quiet. The building is old and looks like a grand old house which is much more inviting than it's competitor just a little way down the road. The staff are superb and nothing is a bother for them, very refreshing that they have grasped the concept of customer service. We stayed in a grandstand room that had a balcony overlooking the racecourse and whilst the room was nice there were a couple of issues with the cleanliness of the valance on the bed and that underneath the drawers had not been fully hoovered for some time, you could tell that they had just gone around the unit (no big deal, but one of us has allergy to dust). The furniture is a little tired and would benefit from updating. The hotel uses Streamline Taxis and I have to say they are brilliant, courteous and friendly. We had a light bite upon arrival in the bar and it was lovely just enough to fill the gap. We enjoyed it so much that we decided to dine in the hotel on our second evening and weren't disappointed, our steaks were cooked beautifully. The breakfast buffet was extensive with lots of choice and the fact that there was a chef on hand to cook you something a little different was nice. All in all we would definitely stay here again.

Held a surprise party for my mother - the staff and venue could not have been better. Special praise must go to Sarah, the events' coordinator and Steven who looked after us during the evening. Their enthusiasm, attention to detail and care resulted in a wonderful evening for my mother and all her guests. Everything we wanted was accommodated with no trouble and they could not have made it better for us. - I think Steven was as excited as we were about surprising her! All our guests were very complimentary about the standards of their bedrooms and the food and we would definitely book future family events here.
Many thanks again.

I have written varying standards of reviews on this hotel in the past. We regularly go to York as we have several friends there, and we also love racing. The Marriott suits us because it is right next to the racecourse, is not in the centre of the city so is not in a noisy area, and has easy access to the city via taxis or buses (which stop right outside very frequently). So in the past we have put up with any "quirks".

However, we were there again last week for 4 nights, and found all the things we have complained about in the past have been rectified. The grandstand view room was lovely. The breakfast excellent. Bar food and service super. Reception very helpful and accommodating. We were very, very happy with our stay, and have already booked again for next year.

Room Tip: Racecourse view rooms are the best

We stayed for two nights in three rooms for a family weekend away. It was busy for York races weekend, because it's right next to the race course (tip - if you're not into the horses, check before you book). Check in was rubbish, I waited ages while staff ambled around with hands in their pockets. Room was a bit tired and the bathroom needed a bit of updating. Despite being full, breakfast was really good and staff in the restaurant and bar did an excellent job and were always friendly. Maybe they should get a job on reception?

Just spent a short break at this hotel. Warm and friendly staff whoever you met. Room well equipped and comfortable. Breakfast room had a relaxed atmosphere with friendly helpful staff, breakfast was excellent. As is usual with most hotel chains food and drinks were expensive but nearby venues offered good value for money if you wanted to venture further. Buses into city can be caught opposite hotel £1.60 single fare on number 4, 12 and 13. Drivers very helpful in making sure you know where to catch buses back.
The walk into York, or a decent pub for a meal is just over a mile and takes about 20 minutes. Leisure facilities were brilliant pool, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and gym - well worth using and helpful staff. All in all a very enjoyable break and we will return.
