If you can you must visit this railway museum. You can spend most of the day here and it's FREE, although they do like you to give a donation. There's a huge café and a lovely restaurant so no need to worry about food and it's all very reasonably priced. So much history and enchantment of the old steam locomotives and what a size they are too. Even people not interested in trains will be in awe of the amount of trains on show and the shear size of them. This is one museum every one should take time to visit. Was there any thing I disliked about this museum - no.

This has to be one of the UK's finest attractions without a shadow of doubt. To top it all it's FREE. They ask if you would like to make a donation.
The exhibits are stunning and everything in pristine condition
Fabulous place. Should be on everyone's bucket list.

I'm a regular visitor to the railway museum, and also its "little sister" at Shildon. I'm also a Friend of the Museum.
The exhibits are rotated regulary, so there is always something new to see, and the Warehouse (where many of the small items are exhibited) is so full of stuff that every visit finds something new to catch the eye.
In fact, there is really too much to take in on one visit.
I been to a variety of railway museums around the world, but this is the best by a long way.

Nothing to dislike and the bonus is it's free entry but a donation is considered etiquate or simply buy a Guide book which are very informative and glossy pictures for the children. Many good exhibits on display especially the working Replica Stephensons Rocket with the 'stand up carriage' which our Grandson really enjoyed. Many aspects for the 'older' visiter also with a good library full of information. Spent the morning here as our Grandson tends to wisk us round fairly quickly to get to the well stocked shop !!!
