The National Railway Museum had been recommended but we went along not sure what to expect and with little interest in railways. This museum was a revelation. Excellent display of engines from the "Rocket" to the Japanese "Bullet Train" in the main engine shed and an evocative display of engines, carriages and other railway artefacts in the 'station'. Guides and volunteer guides very informative and helpful. Whilst we were at the museum, a very entertaining practical display and talk was given about the turntable. Entry is free but we had no hesitation in giving a donation as the museum is so worthy. A high quality attraction that is informative and entertaining. Just 10 minutes walk from the city centre.

Very popular museum, and it deserves it completely. It is stunning that entrance is actually free, you just want to pay for this experience. So much to see and learn, everything is so nicely restored and kept in great shape. If you're in York, you must have seen all this.

This was a real surprise for me. As it is a Free museum, I wasn't expecting how big and interesting it is. I am not a train buff but I was completely amazed by the wonderful exhibits. Tea in the buffet train area was a treat. Out visit lasted about two and half hours. We could have stayed longer, but had other places to visit.

The National Railway Museum was a real surprise. We spent a good 3 hours in the Museum with our 9 year old, and all of us enjoyed it. Nice trains, nicely displayed, and no information overload. And best of all, it's for free, although they encourage donations. A nice contrast to other, often overpriced attractions in the UK.

One thing that we didn't enjoy was the simulator ride. Not very exciting and a rather poor value. Otherwise, this attraction is highly recommended.

Loved looking at all the trains, especially the mail car even if it did remind me of work! It's free as well so good for family's although a donation is always appreciated if you've had a good time which we did.
