We loved the NRM and wished we could have spent more time exploring the whole Museum. THe exhibit is very large and warning it will take some time to explore. So many things to see and do. The history on display here is mind boggling.

A really interesting museum with lots to see. Perfect for family outings and in central York. Lots of locomotives on display.

Not only does the museum have an outstanding collection of engines, carriages, etc., it has a number of interesting exhibits about little known aspects of rail history. The exhibit on ambulance trains of World War I describes how wounded soldiers were brought back from the front, a somber look at one aspect of that terrible conflict.
There is plenty at the museum for parents with restless children: from train rides to a fine model railway display.

This is well worth a visit to learn a bit about the history and evolution of trains in England. The scale of the museum itself and the engines & carriages is impressive. Also interesting to see how royalty fit out their carriages. You could spend a lot of time here.
