“Room guides were fantastic!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 July 2014 via mobile

Walking around Fairfax house provided a wonderful insight into fine Georgian living! The furniture and paintings on display are really interesting. The enthusiasm and knowledge of the room guides is what makes Fairfax House a five star museum though. The facts and stories they told really bought the exhibits to life, and questions were welcomed.

Admission is £5 for students, which includes readmission for a year. There is a pay and display car park between Fairfax House and Clifford's Tower.

“Splendid Museum”

This is a brilliant display of Georgian history of the upper classes. Well worth seeing with any timely displays, and a number of activities to engage in. easy to imagine being in the time period.

“Worth the visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 July 2014

The house is preserved as the last owner would have lived in it. It gives a good idea of how the gentry would have lived. I loved the fact that the people in the rooms giving explanations were all volunteers, it made it more special because it was more personalized. Questions were always happily answered.

“Well presented”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 June 2014

Fairfax House was a lovely surprise to us. The volunteers and staff are very knowledgeable and helpful.
There are no loos in the house, but the house backs onto a shopping centre that has public loos. The ladies was clean but the gents apparently dreadful, so maybe you should go to a nearby coffee shop.
The house is full of the Noel Terry Georgian furniture that he acquired during his lifetime and bequeathed to the city council, but he did not live here- the furniture has been moved here because of its Georgian style.
There are some wonderful clocks on display.
The story of the Fairfax family is also very interesting if not a little sad. Worth a visit and covered by the York Pass.
