Interesting and informative with out the usual boring museum-ness. The layout and the way it is run makes this well worth visiting. Definitely 5 stars and worth the admission.
If you have to make a choice between Jorvik and here - spend the money here as you wont be disappointed!!.

York Castle Museum is like an Aladdin's Cave with lots of different scenes (like film sets) to walk around and holographic characters from the past who tell you about their lives. There are also several guides to show you around and bring the history to life - an excellent, interactive museum.

Well worth a visit, we were in the museum for 5 hours therefore plenty to see. The Great War section was very good.

Went to the museum today after reading the reviews, we got there for the opening at 9.30am which was ideal as there was no que. The exhibitions were well laid out, we loved the display to commemorate the 1st world war, also the victorian streets, one of the volunteers very kindly about the history of the prison and was very informative. There is a good variation of displays & items right up until the 1980's which brought back memories.
The cost is a little steep at £9.50pp but we thought it was worth it

Loved the prison exhibit and the Victorian street. Lots to see and a good morning out. The war display was good too. Will return with the children.
