Owner description: The Merchant Adventurers’ Hall is one of York’s medieval marvels. Set in beautiful gardens in the heart of historical York, it is open for public use as a museum, wedding and hospitality venue and meeting place some 650 years after construction began in 1357. This stunning timber framed building was constructed by a fraternity made up of York citizens to provide a base for charity, worship and business. Today, as well as being a fascinating accredited museum it is also a scheduled ancient monument and Grade 1 listed building. The Hall is home to many remarkable collections. Including silver, furniture and paintings, which provide a glimpse into the rich history of the Hall and the people associated with it. The Hall also remains the everyday base for the Company of Merchant Adventurers of the City of York. They invite you to discover the secrets of this unique guild hall and its 650 years of history.

If I had to get married again I think I'd have my wedding reception here. Lovely building and grounds.

Wonderful building with fascinating story of retailing in Medieval York. Useful audio guide provides details of rooms and decor. Impressive timeline on wall in Great Hall with pictures.

The most breathtaking original medieval hall that I have ever seen. So many beautiful objects to see and so much history to learn about. A very interesting temporary exhibition on the Wars of the Roses was also on while I was there. Well worth a visit by history lovers.

Of all the places I visited in York, this is one of the finest. In spite of the presence of some modern furniture (i.e. stacking chairs for "events") the preservation of the old building is well done, and there is a most useful (free) audio guide available, with a large number of different programmes which can be selected as indicated by discreete little notices throughout the building. Set in an attractive little garden below the modern street level, this is one not to be misssed if you are interested in ancient York.

I haven't figured out yet why I found it so interesting, when it is basically just a big old building with a large hall upstairs (with a little room off to the side), and then a large cellar-type space downstairs (with a chapel at one end).

But I loved it! Perhaps it's the atmosphere of a building that's changed very little in over 600 years. Maybe it's just that the name and the history of the organisation really capture the imagination. The audio guide is very informative, and makes you notice things that would normally be completely ignored.

I'm very pleased that the ticket allows you to go back again within a year, because I can see myself going there again (and I live over 200 miles away).
