Owner description: The Merchant Adventurers’ Hall is one of York’s medieval marvels. Set in beautiful gardens in the heart of historical York, it is open for public use as a museum, wedding and hospitality venue and meeting place some 650 years after construction began in 1357. This stunning timber framed building was constructed by a fraternity made up of York citizens to provide a base for charity, worship and business. Today, as well as being a fascinating accredited museum it is also a scheduled ancient monument and Grade 1 listed building. The Hall is home to many remarkable collections. Including silver, furniture and paintings, which provide a glimpse into the rich history of the Hall and the people associated with it. The Hall also remains the everyday base for the Company of Merchant Adventurers of the City of York. They invite you to discover the secrets of this unique guild hall and its 650 years of history.

You definitely need the audio commentary which is free with your entry. It tells you all about the hall - listen out for John the builder...The interactive games in the Undercroft are fun (for adults as well as kids!). The gardens are beautiful and a nice place to sit and relax

Well worth a visit and can be completed in about 40 minutes. No guide book however but a comprehensive audio is an adequate replacement.

There is a wealth of history in this splendid old medieval building, and the audio commentary is excellent. You will learn about its history, and also the meaning of one or two expressions such as "taking her down a peg or two" (which was actually originally a compliment). There are three main areas, the great hall (which would be a wonderful place for a wedding reception), the chapel and the undercroft. There are also interesting exhibitions of artefacts (including the pegged beer tankard - see above).

We love this place. A fascinating original medieval timber building that is a pleasure to step into. Another oasis of calm in a very busy city - in its hey day it would have been anything but an oasis of calm as it was a busy trading place but you can sit in here, close your eyes and imagine the past comings and goings of this wonderful old building. 5 years ago when I was last there it was £1 to go in but now it's £6 per adult which I think is too much and the price will put many people off which is a great shame.

The location of this place is just perfect, very close to the city centre. Also the Hall & gardens are very pretty, it has a river passing right next to the venue giving it a very scenic advantage.
