“Perfectly adequate friendly hotel. Great for staying centrally without spending a fortune”
Reviewed 13 July 2010

This hotel was lovely to stay in. We were only there for one night and barely in the room but the staff were friendly and accomodating (letting us pay per person even though there were spare beds in our room). The breakfast in the morning was delicious and the rooms clean and comfortable.

It's priced closely to some of the out of town places but is cheap considering its location.

We stayed here rather than the Travel Lodge where all our friends were staying as the Travel Lodge website tells you it will be noisy. Apart from a little traffic noise it was quite at the Heworth Court. We were not bothered about being in the annex two doors down, the room was big with two double beds but could have looked so much better with a new carpet, curtains and bedding. I have never seen a bathroom with perspex walls instead of tiles and a loo roll holder like you get in public toilets. It was all very clean though. The breakfast was good, the staff nice and i expect its easy to charge over £100 for the night when you know you will get a full hotel in York. Good to have on site parking as well and they let us leave the car there for most of the Saturday.

York is wonderful, but look elsewhere for your hotel. The photographs are misleading. I would definitely describe this as 2* accommodation. The breakfasts, although waitress served, not self service, were fine; but the restaurant was closed on Monday (WHY?), the bedroom was boiling hot (the air con flashed lights but that was all), the towels had disgusting marks on them so that we had to complain and get them changed, and we found ourselves LOCKED OUT of the carpark at 11.15pm so that we had to leave our car in the street!

Just wanted to respond to this review as follows. Firstly apologies for marks on the towels. We would have gladly replaced these for you. The aircon could have been adjusted for you on request. As far as the car park is concerned, we advertise that we have secure free carparking. The security gate is closed at dusk. All guests are given a welcome card on check-in which tells them this and explains that the security code to open the gate can be obtained from reception on request. We are advertised as '4 Star Guest Accommodation' as rated by Visit Britain offering meals Tuesday-Saturdays in our Lamplight Restaurant. I'm sorry you did not enjoy waitress service. We find the majority of guests are happy with this. We want all of our guests to go away happy and would urge anyone staying with us to let us know straight away if they are not satisfied with anything so that we have the opportunity for putting things right during their stay. Thank you for your comments. The majority of guests do go away happy and we have many return customer and recommended guests - please see other major hotel booking agencies as listed on this site. I.e. booking.com and laterooms for up to date reviews.

we went to york last weekend for a stay with my partner and a few friends, we wernt in the hotel but in the small cottages just out the back, the hotel grounds were beautifyul and in the summer would be great to sit out in the courtyard.
Our room was very basic and to me to wasnt worth £80 for the night, the room was very average and the toilet was extremily strange you were in between 2 walls and to say the least there wasnt a lot of room!! our bed was smaller than a double and there was 2 adults sleeping in here! not good!
the hotel staff were really nice and tried to accomodated for you.
The morning after the night before we went for breakfast this again was average! and wasnt worth the £80 we had paid! i think if we were to go back we would be staying in the travellodge in the centre of york at £35 per night!

My boyfriend and I visited Heworth Court guest house in March 2010 for 1 night and enjoyed an overall pleasant stay. We had booked the executive chandelier room which was very comfortable with everything you would expect - tea/coffee making facilities, television, en suite bathroom etc. The only problem we had with the room itself was the temperature, it was absolutely boiling (even with the radiators on the lowest setting) which made our nights sleep a little uncomfortable to say the least!

The guest house was in excellent proximity to York city centre at only a ten minute walk from the city walls. In the evening on our trip into the city we found the bus stop which is just next to the hotel that costed £1 each right into the street with all the pubs and eateries. However on the way back we managed to confuse a taxi driver who seemed to think they were two Heworth Court hotels and took us to the wrong one!

The main downfall of this hotel was its restaurant and breakfast service. Upon arrival my boyfriend and I were informed about the in house restaurant - the lamplight which would be serving bar meals that evening. As we had arrived late we decided to take advantage of this, however when we came back an hour later we were told that we could not be served as they already had a booking of 16 odd guests for dinner and we would have to wait! They did not mention this earlier, nor did they reccomend that we reserve a table from our room if we had required dinner. We did not stay and instead ate at a lovely chinese restaurant in the city. (not jumbos i might add which I do not personally recommend).
When we arrived at breakfast the following morning, it was obvious that the staff were very busy with almost every table occupied. However after being seated we waited 20 minutes before we were even acknowledged and we were not even offered any tea/coffee/juice. Although the staff were apologetic, I do not think it would have caused them any harm to offer us a beverage. I also noticed that one guest who arrived ten minutes after us was served tea, juice and a full english before my boyfriend and I were even recoqnised!

Overall the Heworth guest house did not meet our expections in terms of service (after all it is rated as 4 star) but you cannot fault its location to the city centre.

It was definitely in need of redecoration but it wasn't dirty. The staff were very friendly and extremely helpful. The whiskey bar was great and the breakfasts were very nice. Part of the floor under my bed was a bit torn up but I wouldn't have noticed had I not dropped my earring!!! A great location at a 10 minute walk into the centre of York.
