Stayed 4 nights and enjoyed every moment. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. Breakfast was lovely with a wide range of things to chose from and made us ready for the busy sightseeing day ahead. Room was airey and clean, and the bed was very comfortable. The bathroom had a lovely large bath and seperate shower and it was clean to a high standard. It was only a 15min walk to the centre of York and so was quite central. I would recommend this B&B to anybody.

Heworth Court is a B&B with (by the annexing of neighbouring properties) 28 rooms, and it was fully booked, and therein lies the problem. The reception area is in a narrow hallway just inside the front door. Two people were already being attended to when I arrived, and then another four arrived, so it was a bit cramped. And the others got seen to before me.
My "luxury room" (which was just big enough to contain the bed, two chairs, and a chest of drawers) was up a steep, narrow and winding staircase, so it would have been awkward with luggage. The bed was firm, which I like, and I slept well. It was nice to have the option of a bath, but it would have been too small to lie down in so I didn't bother. The shower had body jets, but they were not very effective because they were furred up. There was a generous supply of tea, coffee, just two biscuits, and one hot chocolate. When boiled, the kettle got very hot and smelled of scorched plastic, the soap pump didn't work, and one of the basin taps was loose. I was first into the breakfast room at 8am, so I was served promptly, with an excellent full English, but once it got busy I could see how the three (very polite and friendly) staff members would struggle to keep up.
An awkward compromise between an impersonal hotel and a family B&B, adequate for one or two nights if you're not expecting to spend much time in your room.

Just got back from what should of been a chill out getaway from a few stressful months. All we got was a room that to be frank was dreadful in apperence and had a very strange smell every time you walked into it. Other down sides was the fact that we were in the annex which is next door but one ( very strange) we were in the attic which we had to climb four flights of stairs to reach(with luggage} which was not good at all as the stairs are steep. The room was very dated and had dust everywhere which means it had not a good clean for a while. There was water still left in the kettle from the previous occupiant, the shower room was ok, but no shelf inside for your toiletries which meant you had to put them on the floor, the bed was hard and very uncomfortable and do not get me started about the pillows. Not good at all.think they are made out of bean bags.
We have stayed in alot of hotels and B&B's in this country, and in all of them I have never stayed in the annex that is next door but one, which means that you have to have breakfast in the main hotel, which means you have to walk in all weather's down the street to achieve this, very strange.
The bar area was dated and over decorated with to many items and tartan material and the ceiling is papered with whiskey bottle front covers style paper which made the room very dark and very dated. The service was ok,the member of staff that was on reception served us,but the beer ran out and there was not alot choice after that.
The breakfast was about the best thing about this break, the staff were friendly and the breakfast was fine, it was not self sevice on the juice and cereal and there was not alot of choice either.
It says that this is a four star accomadation, which was given by Visit Britain??
Sorry but this B&B is not a fourstar, from our experience, more like a two star and was not worth the money that we paid to stay there.
The location was not good, outside the city centre even though when we booked it stated near the train station. So if you have not got your own transport it means either a twenty minute walk, bus ride or taxi to get to see the sights and shopping.

Me and my partner stayed here just for the one night with the possibility of staying a second. We found the room ok but nothing special, the shower room was small and the toilet was in what looks like a cupboard that had been converted into a toilet room.
The only thing with the room that bothered me was the fact there wasn't many sockets so an extension lead was used which had the kettle plugged into it which wasn't very long so when i'd plugged my straighteners into it caused the extension lead to fall on the floor knocking the kettle over which was full of water next to where i had my hairdryer and straighteners turned on.
We headed down for breakfast around half 8. After walking into the breakfast area we were given the choice of 2 tables and we just sat at the nearest. No drink was offered to us and me and my partner were laughing saying we'd been sat in the naughty corner as we were been ignored while everyone around us seemed to be getting pampered over, after 20 mins a gentleman walked in and as soon as he sat down he was asked if he was served. At this point we walked out and asked if we could be refunded breakfast as we weren't served and explained we'd been sat 20 mins to which we got a sharpe reply from the woman behind reception telling us we'd only been waiting 5 mins and then attempted to march us back into the dining hall. This was now 9am, we had to be out of our rooms for 10am ( I'm sure we would have been charged if we hadn't left the room before 10am though) We returned to our room shocked at how we'd been spoken to and packed our things to leave as we weren't intrested in causing a scene and accepted we weren't getting a refund for the breakfast. On leaving we were offered breakfast again but the staff were leaving so not sure what they were planning on palming us off with.
While packing our car a couple that were staying at the B&B came up to us to tell us they saw how long we waited and noticed we were been ignored and that they had told the lady on reception this, also told us they had also been treat the same when they sat at this table on a previous visit ( not sure why they went back?)
We were also told we could leave our car here free but got a flyer saying we had to pay ?????
We never got a refund or an appology!

We had really anticipated a relaxing couple of nights away in clean and comfortable surroundings.
On arrival the receptionist could barely smile, read off a long list of hotel information and pointed in a vague direction to our room.
The room was tatty to say the least. Furniture was old and scratched, handle missing and not cleaned properly.
The room was festooned with scrappy notices full of does and don'ts - very welcoming.
The information pack was old and worn.
We had to return to reception for a second bathroom cup and then again to get two hand towels.
It was impossible to ventilate the bedroom without freezing as the windows have no adjustment - either fully open or closed., and hooray, a noisy fan positioned below.
The area around the refreshments was dirty and the bedding was old and tired with pillows which were frankly unusable.
The light and fan in the bathroom were not working which made it impossible to see the temperature markings on the shower - ouch.
The dining room staff really did their best but the breakfast selection was poor - no fresh fruit, yogurt etc and the dining room carpet was badly stained in areas.
We are a very positive couple but want to save others wasting their money and time on this accommodation.
We asked to see the duty manager but she does not arrive until 9.30 am. Surely most of the guests have left by then.

Booked on line and got a good rate. Free parking which is great for the city, though there is not a lot of parking space.

The hotel is a good walk from the city taking approx 20 mins but is on the main bus route. Once you reach the city gates There is an abundance of good restaurants.

The hotel is very well maintained and easy on the eye. Check in/out is simple and a paper can be ordered. The hotel has the Whiskey Bar which is cosy and pleasant.

The rooms are reasonable size but not huge. They boast all the usual, TV, kettle etc. Breakfast is good and staff are friendly and efficient.

Happily stay there again.

I've just returned from a visit to Heworth Court where we stayed 2 nights with grandkids aged 4 & 8. The welcome was very friendly & we appreciated being able to park the car & use the facilities before check-in time. The bus service into the city centre is frequent and saves a 10 minute walk. Our room in Sutherland House was spacious, comfortable & clean. The hotel was full because of York Races but we went down to breakfast ( we actually prefer waitress service) about 8.30 and had no problems in being served. Service was friendly & attentive without being over-fussy. We found the hotel to be a good base from which to explore York. If you are looking for a modern hotel with buffet (continental) breakfast then avoid Heworth Court but if you want a comfortable room and a friendly smile then I would recommend the hotel
