“Fantastic location from which to explore York”
Reviewed 30 October 2011

My wife and I stayed here last weekend. We walked from the station (5 minutes walk) and from the moment we walked in we loved it. The staff were all very friendly and the building itself is (as per a previous posting) atmospheric.

The room we had was great, with all the features you would expect from a hotel of this type, plus the most comfortable hotel bed ever!

The building is perfectly situated for the major sights (the Minster etc) and for the shops.

One thing to bear in mind. Because the building is listed and therefore has single glazed sash windows our room suffered a little from noise (particularly in the morning when the bin men came!) but that was a small price to pay.

Great hotel, fantastic city. Would definitely stay here again.

Thank you very much for your lovely review. We are thrilled that you enjoyed your stay with us in York. I am particularly pleased that you appreciated the beauty and historic charm of the building, as well as the staff. We are very proud of our workforce, who always try their best to make guests feel welcome and satisfied with their stay. The hotel is situated right in the center of the city, next to one of the major shopping streets and a stone's throw from the Minster, Museum Gardens and the famous Betty's Tea Rooms. Unfortunately, a side-effect of this, as you say, is that there can be some unavoidable noise from the streets. Thankfully, as the area is pedestrianized most of the time, our guests are not troubled by vehicle engines! I am very glad that you thought this was a small price to pay, and we would love to see you again in the future. Thanks again for the review.

Kind regards,
The Judges Lodgings Hotel

I stayed here with my mum in room 10 last weekend, with a living social excellent deal. We loved the location right in the centre of York. While we were there a little boy came iupto the entrancedoor with his dad and said 'wow' when he saw inside. That's how we felt about it too. The gold chandelier, warm fire, flowers and ornate ceilings are amazing. The girls on reception were very friendly and helpful, asking how our day had been and what we had been doing. There was a good selection of food and drinks at breakfast. We loved the big sleigh beds, jacuzzi bath, touches like DVD library and IPOD docking station too. Thank you, we'll be coming back.

Thank you so much for taking the time to review your stay with us. It is always lovely to hear that our guests have enjoyed their time here.

We are delighted that both you and the small boy in our entranceway were so enthralled by the many charms of the hotel. The building itself does indeed truly have the 'wow' factor and we are so pleased that you enjoyed exploring the streets of York from our city centre location. We are very fortunate to retain so many of the original features which really add to the unique experience of staying here.

Our DVD library is well worth a rummage through- there are some great films in there! Spending a rainy afternoon curled up in one of our luxurious beds with a cup of Yorkshire tea, occasionally glancing out the window to marvel at the Minster... super.

We look forward to welcoming you both back for your return visit. Thanks again for such a wonderful review.

Kind regards,

Lovely, atmospheric hotel , the staff, especially the lovely lady on reception,( didnt catch her name) were really extremely pleasant and helpful, especially as we had a bit of a blip with our jacuzzi bath not working! However this was dealt with promptly, and we were given a free upgrade to another lovely room, complete with 4 poster bed! Breakfast was delicious, nothing was too much trouble, generally. The only thing i would say is the central heating was a little too high for the mild weather we had, also that the breakfast room would be a lovely place to dine in the evenings, we didnt particularly like the cellar bar, seemed dark and dreary ! We would highly recommend for a great central location, we were made to feel very welcome and will definitely think about staying again on our next visit to York!

Room Tip: !st floor is lovely.

Many thanks for taking the time to complete a review. We are delighted that you had such a lovely stay with us here at the Judges Lodgings Hotel and that you enjoyed relaxing in the luxury of our magnificent 7ft4 poster bed. All our staff here are passionate about providing excellent service and it is always wonderful to hear that our guests have enjoyed the friendly and welcoming atmosphere we strive to create.

Breakfast is, of course, the most important meal of the day (!) and we are pleased that you found ours to be delicious-I will personally pass on your compliments to our chef.

We are sorry to hear that you weren't as impressed by the cellar bar as your accommodation- you will be pleased to hear it is in the process of undergoing improvements in decor. It has in fact recently undergone a 'spooky' transformation for Halloween and is suitably atmospheric, complete with cobwebs and candlelit alcoves. We hope that you will find it more to your liking upon your next visit

Also, it can indeed get pretty cosy with the heating here as well- sorry it was a little warm for you. We very much look forward to seeing you again so that we can ensure every aspect of your stay is spot on and we can 'outdo' ourselves and exceed our 4/5 rating to get full marks.

My husband booked a weekend at this hotel for my 40th Birthday. Considering how much they charge for a room per night I was totally unimpressed with the quality. On arrival, the receptionist greeted us in the most laid back, unprofessional way. I don't think she looked at the guest book all day to see who was due etc. The little touches in the room, as you'd expect for that charge, just weren't there. We had no tea spoons, the mirror light in the bathroom didn't work, drooping flowers, no tissues in the container for the whole weekend.... We did complete a survey before leaving but I suspect it was placed in the bin as we never received any communication! Would not stay here again, price way too much for the quality!!

Many thanks for your feedback. We very much appreciate people taking the time to comment on their stay with us here. We are always ready to take on board any constructive criticism so that we can continue to provide our guests with the best possible experience.

Sorry to hear that there was a lack of attention to detail when you stayed with us in December 2010. This is indeed unacceptable. Missing tissues and broken bulbs are a stain on our reputation and are not indicative of the 4* hotel that we pride ourselves to be.

I am pleased to say that, one year on, much has changed. From the warm, welcoming and professional service to the fresh flowers in the foyer, attention to detail here is paramount. This detail is reflected in little touches in each of the rooms, which include the luxury toiletries, the range of complimentary beverages and our nightly 'turn down' service. This prepares each room to ensure a night of restful sleep. We strive to make sure that if guests have any quandaries during their stay, they are seen to straight away. We also pride ourselves on our great service and repeatedly get a positive response in this area.

Again, please accept our apologies that you did not feel your stay was up to standard.

Kind regards,
Judges Lodgings Hotel

Great location and nice breakfast but we have stopped in nicer hotels for less money! House has been nicely decorated but it it looking a tad tired and could do with refreshing. The £10 charge for parking per day is ridiculous, especially when considering the price of the rooms. The car park should be free for the first 6 cars, its not actually a car park, its just a drive and they do move your cars around when required.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review.

I am glad that you enjoyed our breakfast and our prime location in the centre of the beautiful city of York. We will certainly take your constructive criticism on board. Both the bedrooms and the communal areas of the hotel have been decorated to an extremely high standard, which we are determined to maintain. Therefore I can assure you any areas of the hotel that look "tired" will be refurbished over the next few weeks.

With reference to the car parking, I must defend our procedure, and I hope this will make you feel more settled. I understand that £10 may seem like a lot for car parking, however it is less than it would cost a guest to park in the nearest public car park, whilst also being much more central and convenient. I think that you would struggle to find a more competitive rate within the city walls than our own. We give guests an option to park, it is by no means compulsory, and we make the price very clear at the booking time. We also inform people that we may be required to move their car, due to potential movement of other guests (although I should add that this very rarely happens and is more of a precaution). We also do not allow more than 4 cars in the courtyard at one time, to make car jams virtually impossible. Therefore I hope you will understand that your suggestion about the first six cars is unrealistic.

Thanks again for submitting a review. I am glad that your overall experience of the hotel was positive, and if you would like to return I hope that you will be entirely satisfied with all elements of your stay.

Kind regards,
The Judges Lodgings Hotel

Stayed one night, and the overall comfort and service of the hotel was wonderful. The room was spotless, the breakfast delicious and the service excellent. Particularly of note would be the beds, which were among the comfiest I have ever slept in, and the breakfast combination of cold buffet and a choice of around ten hot options. The service in the hotel was faultless as well. The building itself focusses on old-school comfort, with an open fire in the reception, thick carpets and soft lighting.
Separate from the hotel is the bar, which one has to go outside to reach. The atmosphere here is completely different. Whereas the hotel is smart, clean and friendly, the bar is scruffy, sticky and unwelcoming, and it seems as though the management, who have clearly gone to great length to ensure great service in the hotel, have not shown the same concern when employing the bar staff.
However, as the bar is practically a separate entity, please do not let the above comments dissuade you from staying at this wonderful little hotel.

Verdict:
Hotel: Excellent work, well done
Bar: Could do better...

Thank you very much for your wonderful review. We are absolutely thrilled that you enjoyed your stay at the Judges Lodgings.

Our highest priority is service, and we are extremely proud of our members of staff, who work tirelessly to make guests feel welcome in York and satisfied with their stay. Our housekeeping team aim for perfection, which is immediately visible throughout the hotel, by the cleanliness and comfort of all of the bedrooms as well as the communal areas. I will also pass on your message about breakfast to the chef,. who will be very pleased about your lovely comments.

I am particularly glad that you appreciated the "old-school comfort" of the hotel. We like our guests to enjoy the history of the building, and we have made every effort to maintain its antique beauty, whilst also accessorizing it with modern features. We feel that elements such as original fireplaces and vaulted ceilings distinguish us from other hotels in York, and allow us to become part of the city's cultural reputation.

We am sorry to hear that you were not as keen on the cellar bar - it is currently in the process of improvements, both in terms of aesthetics and also the food and drinks menu. There are also new offers out, for both guests and members of the public, which we would love for you to try if you ever return to York. We really value your feedback, and will certainly take all of your comments on board.

Thanks again for the review. We hope to see you back at Judges Lodgings some time in the future!

Kind regards,

We had an enjoyable stay as the room was large and airy and the bathroom very nicely done. What was not so good was that the TV, Internet, heated towel rail and vanity mirror did not work. Also, we found it could use a bit of a paint and a clean up in the front yard as it looked a little shabby. The staff whilst friendly, were very young and inexperienced. Having a young girl ask to help you with your luggarge is really not acceptable, alos one wearing a mini skirt. That they weren't uniformed made it difficult to know who was staff and they were constantly absent which made getting your room key a bit difficult. Finally, the fishmonger blocked the driveway and then refused to move, being verbally abusive, so that did not make our departure particularly pleasant. Kitchen struggled with breakfast with hot meals taking half an hour and then the poached eggs were cooked hard. Great spot for location, as in being close to everything.

Room Tip: We were in Room 3 and it was lovely, beautifully furnished and very large, but could be noisy in sum...

Thank you very much for taking the time to write a review. We are very pleased that your stay at the Judges Lodgings was a positive one, particularly with your references about our prime location in the centre of the city of York and the beauty of the room in which you stayed.

I am deeply apologetic that the electrical equipment in your room was not working in the duration of your stay. Prior to your arrival, we had some trouble with heavy winds, which damaged the signal to both the television satellite and the internet. We have managed to resolve the problems with the TV... the internet in some of the bedrooms has proved more difficult to fix, however I can assure you that this will be done as soon as possible. Meanwhile, our guests can still enjoy full internet access in the common areas of the hotel, such as the foyer, the breakfast room and the reading room. However, the fact that these items were temporarily out of action during your stay is unacceptable, and I am sincerely sorry for this.

In relation to your other points, I assure you that despite the staff being young, they are extremely competent. We are very proud of our workforce, and usually receive very positive feedback about their service. As you can imagine, it would be impossible for us to have door staff considering the size of the hotel. It would also not really be inkeeping with the style of place, which favours a personal approach, rather than the 'detached' aura of larger chain hotels. We prefer our staff to get to know the guests, and we feel this commitment can be seen by policies such as helping you with your luggage, showing you to your room and dealing with any issues or queries directly.

I have taken notice of your concern about the staff dress, and your constructive criticism has been very useful in reminding us that we must be smart at all times. As a direct result of your review, the front of house staff have all been instructed that they must pay very careful attention to make sure they look professional, even though we do not have a strict uniform policy. I am very pleased to say that there have been a lot of changes in this respect in the past couple of weeks.

I apologise about your unfortunate encounter with the fishmonger, however of course, he is not directly employed by the hotel so we cannot really claim responsibility for it. We did discuss our concerns him afterwards, and I hope that our members of staff managed to pacify the situation somewhat!

Our kitchen is usually very swift with breakfast orders, and people also tend to be very pleased with the quality of the breakfast that they receive. We are very disappointed that this was not the same for you, and I will certainly pass the message onto the chef. I hope that if you come back to the Judges Lodgings again, you will be satisfied with all elements of your stay.

Kind regards,
Judges Lodgings
