“Birthday Treat!”
Reviewed 11 July 2012

Not very often I write a review, but I do read them, so felt necessary to write a one for this hotel. Booked a room for 2 adults and an 11 year old very last minute (day before!). Was given 'The Flat' as this was the only room left available for size of party. Was more than pleasantly surprised with this, after a very welcoming check in we were shown to our room, which was a short walk through to the back of the hotel, but it was ideal for us (nice & quiet), 2 rooms, 1 housing a double bed and seating area, 2nd housing bunkbeds, there was also a bathroom and a separate toilet. Plenty of strage facilities for clothes etc. Rooms were lovely and clean and plenty of towels for our stay. Also plenty of complementary coffees & teas. Our son loved looking at all the querky Laurel & Hardy statues and ornaments around the hotel. Cannot comment on evening meal as we went out to celebrate my birthday. Lovely 10 minute fairly flat walk into York which was nice. Breakfast is early between 7.45 - 9.00am, but this does get you up and ready for the day ahead and we didn't mind this at all. We all had a full english breakfast which was fab. Would definitely stay here again as its a bargain for York, especially when the 1st child is free.

Room Tip: The Flat is ideal for families.

We were with a group of 30 people staying here. We found the Hotel clean as we were a large group we needed several rooms including some singles (with only a modest supplement). The staff very friendly and helpful despite having another two large parties in. Only a short walk into York city centre. On the whole the group were impressed with the Hotel and the menu. Most said that they would definitely think of using it again, only one slight niggle, the water on the top floor was not very warm.

This is a cheap stay hotel and is all you need for a weekend break. Wouldn't want to be cooped up on a Rainey day in the room as mine was small and sparse. It was clean though and warm. Breakfast service was busy and took a while to get served. Nicely situated for the city with only a ten min walk to the city centre

This hotel have been fabulous!!! as we were a large group needing several rooms and due to it being a bank holiday we booked up early and because of the large group I kept needing to change rooms, add rooms, change days of rooms and the hotel staff were very accomodating, if it was me I'd be getting annoyed with me!!! but they were fantastic!!! When we arrived we were greated with a warm welcome and through out the stay the staff were very friendly, the hotel itself was clean and comfortable and very well priced, just a short walk to the city centre as well we couldn't have picked a better hotel!! Thank you so much Wheatlands Lodge hotel staff!! the breakfast was lovely as well!! and to top it off a hen left a gold and diamond set of earrings and necklace in their room and on the same day as checking out I have been emailed asking if they belong to us and they will be happy to send them home!! BRILLIANT!! Highly reccomend!! Thank you!!!

Once we had secured our parking at the rear, we were made very welcome and were shown to our recently renovated room. Everything was tastefully decorated with a modern "olde worlde" feel to it. It is located just outside the wall, within easy walking distance to the normal attractions. Breakfast was the standard English fare and we were well looked after by their friendly staff. A nice hotel at a reasonable price.

Room Tip: I usually ask for a higher room to avoid noise, but it would not have been an issue here.

My wife and I have been meeting friends in York for several years and required an hotel that was clean, modest in price and convenient for the city centre and attractions. This hotel satisfied all these criteria.
The hotel is on three floors and has several interconnecting lounges, thus allowing small groups to have a get-together. Television is available in one of the lounges and a pianist played in another during the evening.
On arrival, guests are offered coffee if they are waiting for their room to be made available. This year the hotel was full to capacity as the York Races were being held. A number of the guests were attending this event.
The bedroom was clean and had been recently refurbished with excellent walk-in shower facility, television etc. Coffee making facilities are available in the bedrooms. Cupboard and drawer space was more than ample and the bed was comfortable.
The dining room is able to accommodate a large number of guests and the food provided is varied and well presented by smartly dressed waiters. Breakfasts were fairly standard with a good choice and the four course meal plus coffee at dinner was very commendable.
Although the meal periods are fairly short (7.45 - 9.00 for breakfast and 6.00 to 7.30 for dinner), it was quite adequate and wouldn't worry you unless you wanted a long lie in!
The staff at the hotel are all very friendly and helpful. Car parking is available to the rear of the hotel and in the main road to the front and this can be tricky if the hotel is full. However the staff are expert at shuffling the cars in and out.
The hotel is situated about five minutes walk from the Micklegate and the city wall, which enables one to have a quick access to the wall if you wish to do all or part of it on foot. Buses run regularly into the town centre from within yards of the hotel.
Although the railway station is about 10 to 15 minutes walk away many of the guests with luggage took a taxi.
York itself has many attractions and is easily walk-able. Its bridges afford beautiful river views, but beware of prices of drinks in bars along the river banks.
Whetlands Lodge hotel is well managed and provides excellent value for a short stay in York.

Very friendly and helpful, including making sure I had somewhere to park. A nice clean room with en suite facilities. A nice evening meal that was good value for money. Breakfast was also good.
