“Best Hotel so far”
Reviewed 23 May 2013

Twice a year a small group of friends meet up to renew acquaintances and we stay in Hotels country-wide. The Wheatlands Lodge has just provided us with the best experience so far. We tend to book blind and take what we get (never the cheapest, never the most expensive). Everything at the Wheatlands Lodge surpassed all our expectations. Brilliant!

The Wheatlands Lodge is a fantastic value for money hotel. Friendly ,extremely helpful staff especially reception and bar / restaurant. Spotlessly clean throughout all areas.Breakfast was excellent, with options for all tastes. Very quiet location. Excellent nights sleep. Would recommend this hotel without hesitation.

Room Tip: we had a corner front facing room ,1st floor away from reception. perfect.

My mother spent a weekend in York as part of a coach holiday with 9 friends from her local WRI. She was most impressed with the Wheatlands Lodge Hotel and asked if I could type this review on her behalf.
Room clean and bright. Food excellent. Staff helpful. All in a very pleasant experience and would have no hesitation in recommending the hotel to anyone travelling to York.

This hotel is attractively located just outside Micklegate Bar, and is individualistic without ever becoming pretentious. It has a large dining area, and a small but comfortable bar with average bar prices. The room was plain but very clean and the furniture comfy, with a powerful hot shower. WiFi is available and strong in the public areas, but a little hit/miss in the bedroom. The breakfast offers the standard cereals fruit juice etc with a full English breakfast, and egg options. The dinner had five courses inc. tea/coffee, which was plentiful and filling - not sophisticated gourmet food but well cooked and very enjoyable. The staff were first class being friendly and helpful. The hotel offers first class value for money with dinner bed & breakfast for under £55 per night. I would definitely use again, and happily recommend to others if you want a fine hotel that's not a 'chain' hotel at a cheap price.

There's nothing wrong with this place essentially, i'm only speaking from personal experience. The staff were helpful & professional. I stayed in a single room and while the room was pretty small it did me fine. The wifi in the room was unreliable however the staff did tell me upon check-in that the best signal can be found in the guest areas downstairs. It was a little noisy at times due to the school kids saying there but i think you'd have to be a bit of a grouch to annoyed at that. About 15 mins walk into York town centre. No complaints overall.

It was a refreshing change not to be in a chain hotel, but a pleasant family run hotel. I never saw that it was family run as it was broken on my behalf, but it was apparent and I enjoyed the informality and the lack of staff 'uniform', helped to make me feel at home. Staff were friendly, drinks reasonably priced and breakfast standard fayre but more than adequate for the first meal of the day. My only complaint is that I could hear everyone walking past my room in the morning and it woke me up as it sounded like someone was in my room. However, if I need a hotel in York in the future, this would still be my first port of call.
