“Warm welcome at this cosy hotel”
Reviewed 30 April 2014

Our two nights at The Minster were hugely enjoyable, and we received a lovely Yorkshire welcome. Staff terrific and very friendly, room comfortable and clean, and a hero's breakfast each morning. The home-made damson and greengage jam was fab! The hotel is extremely convenient for everywhere you wish to go, and the fact my partner is only semi-mobile (awaiting an op) not a problem, as the bus tour and main attractions were close by.

Room Tip: Ours was on the ground floor, at the back. Just birdsong...

After being attracted by the Minster Hotel website, I telephoned in order to make a reservation. My father is in a wheelchair and unable to walk so I needed to book an accessible room. After explaining this, the receptionist took me through rates and availability before casually mentioning that the wheelchair accessible rooms cannot be accessed by guests in wheelchairs! When I questioned the logic of this she replied that I could think whatever I liked and hung up on me. Is this how all guests are treated or just those with disabilities?

Good afternoon Emma, Thank you for taking the time to phone me following your recent review, I appreciate you telling me the full events of your telephone enquiry, my sincerest apologies for the impression you were given of the hotel and the people that work here. As mentioned I am at a loss to explain why you would have had such a negative experience, all the reception team have been at the Hotel for a number of years, and without exception this is the first negative feedback I have received, and I have had literally hundreds of positive comments about how cheerful and helpful everyone is, especially the team on the reception desk who do go out of their way to provide information and advice to our guests and potential guests.
Your comments have shocked everyone, and as discussed we will review how this has happened and how to ensure it never happens again.
Regards

The crux of any business is the quality of the staff and this Hotel has that in abundance! They all without exception have a "can do " attitude and are happy to share conversation and recommendations. This hotel has a secret weapon "Stuart" in the breakfast dining area who has been there for 22 years and asks each diner with a smile about requirements for breakfast. Taking into account the time he has worked their minus days off and holidays and averaging 15 tables per breakfast he must have asked the same questions over 75,000 times. The beauty of Stuart it feels like it is his first time with a smile and humour which is rare nowadays in most establishments. The rooms are clean and have all mod cons but as a frequent hotel visitor the Internet is a necessity particularly on business. This Hotel is missing a trick for a minimal investment as it certainly is a requirement nowadays for your room and only in the lobby is not enough. The hotel is centrally located, ample parking , value for money and simply wonderful to stay in! We are looking forward to our next visit and after staying in many hotels in a York this one will always be our first pick!

Stayed here for 2 nights over Easter and am happy to confirm the previous Tripadvisor reviews were spot on. The location is great for sightseeing of York being a two or three minute walk from York Minster. We stayed in one of the buildings at the rear of the hotel to minimise any noise disturbance from the busy road at the front. The room was large, clean and had a bath and shower.
Staff were exceptionally pleasant and helpful and the dining room was well appointed. Breakfasts were cooked to order but there were some issues which have prevented me from rating the hotel as 5 star. The black pudding was so overcooked it would have made a good frisbee and that was not a 'one off' as the following morning, residents on a nearby table gave up trying to cut their black pudding. I had a poached egg the following morning which was so solid, it could have made a good stick on sole! The brown 'toast' was so thin it disintegrated into a dozen pieces on trying to butter it. I asked if I could have some cream to go with my porridge, a treat I normally have at my usual hotel in York, the Dean Court, but was told that was not possible.
The free car park is a real bonus and overall, the cost was probably a bit lower than the Dean Court, which is also a great hotel for visiting York. One problem with the location of the room was that plastic mobile laundry bins were moved over the cobbles at about 7.30 a.m. and no one could sleep through that noise! It may also be a good idea to ask for a first floor room to avoid noise from the squeaking floorboards in the rooms above.
However, it would be wrong to give a poor impression of this hotel which is very good overall and I would have no hesitation in staying there again.

We booked to stay here on Easter Sunday, and arrived early but were pleased to find ample free Car parking to the rear of the Hotel. Staff were extremely helpful and we were advised as our Room wasnt quite ready we could leave the car and head into York - this is literally a 5 minute walk! After a lovely walk round and a light bite at Plunketts we headed back to freshen up before going out for a meal. The Room was bright, airy and well appointed, yes one of the lamps didnt work and the bath panel had 2 screw heads sticking out but the 4 Poster Bed was comfy and it was clean and spacious. That evening we headed out and had a fabulous meal at Michaels Brasserie, excellent food with a great choice and a superb atmosphere! Try it if you get chance! We headed back about 10.00pm and again the hotel was nice and quiet. There are several noisy stairs that squeak and groan under foot but that apart we both slept well and woke refreshed and feeling good. Breakfast is great as it is cooked fresh to order and we even had a late checkout at midday, meaning we could chill out after breakfast before checking out. Even then we were informed we could leave our car if we wanted to walk back into York, which we did, and I can honestly say the Staff here are very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. We would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 10, yes it is on the Top FLoor but it overlooks the back of the Hotel and is very...

We stayed at the Minster Hotel for just one night whilst touring through Yorkshire. It was a last minute booking based on a friend's recommendation.
This is a small hotel but with a big welcome. It does many things well - with a couple of areas for improvement. The good things first - it's a great location! We don't normally stay outside the walls in York but we are re-thinking our rule on this after staying here. The Minster Hotel is only just outside the walls at Bootham and a very easy short walk into the old city and Minster area. If you are arriving by car - this is a great hotel because it is relatively easy to drive to and has free parking on site. If, like us, you often leave bits and pieces in the car boot during your stay, this is ideal. It's a friendly place too. Staff seemed all local and really made you feel looked after. If you are a keen breakfaster - the breakfast here is as good as you'll find with plenty of locally sourced produce, well cooked.
On the downside, some rooms (including ours) were a long way up several flights of stairs (although other easier access rooms were available). The view towards the Minster at the front of the building was great but there wasn't much room to layout your luggage. Peculiarly, our heating was controlled from the room next door - not ideal but I think this may be the only room this applied to.
Despite this, the location and staff made this a great stay and it is right up at the top of our list for a return visit.

Room Tip: Phone ahead and explain your requirements. There are rooms adjoining thecar park - no view but easy...
