My husband and I have just returned from spending 2 nights in York. We stayed at the Alhambra and couldn't have been more pleased about our stay. The hotel itself is just a short walk from The Minster and all the usual sight seeing places.

As for the hotel we were very pleased and surprised with it, the rooms were airy and bright, although the bathroom was on the small side but nothing you couldn't handle, the beds were comfortable and the staff were so friendly and helpful , we took advantage of the restaurant on our last evening and the meal exceeded all out expectations the food was piping hot and cooked to high standard our congratulation to the chef. Breakfasts were equally as good with a choice of full English or poached or scrambled eggs plus cereals etc.

I would definitely recommend this hotel to my friends and if we had occasion to return to York would have no hesitation in staying there again

Stayed for 5 nights recently, four poster room was comfortable, breakfasts ok,but spars choice.
The hotel is well situated in quiet sidestreet, only short walks to town, one route lalong the river.
Another plus point is the rear parking..
Staff are pleasant.
Two good guest lounges.

Even though the hotel was old, it was very clean, quiet, and in a great location. The rooms were a good size, the beds comfortable, and the bath tubs huge. The hotel is just minutes walk to the train station ( if you use the short cut at the end of the street). It is also within walking distance to the Minster, the shambles, Betty's tea room, and many other points of interest. The breakfasts and suppers were awesome. The service was very good, and the staff very helpful and friendly.
We will definitely be going back there the next time we travel to Great Britain.

We visit York on many occasions as our daughter studies and works here. We decided to stay for a few days for my birthday. we have stayed in this hotel before many years ago. The lift is a bonus as i struggle with arthritis. We were able to park and walk into the city centre so it is well situated. I do feel that the hotel could do with a makeover. The bathroom was dated and in need of an upgrade and the room was a little plain. The bathroom smelt damp when we arrived and the shower wasn't very strong and my other daughter struggled to wash her long hair.
The breakfast is good with a decent choice however there was no table for us and we had to sit in the bar when the waitress realised which was very drab. If it was just my husband and I we wouldn't stay again. The hotel is in a good spot and the parking is certainly handy but it is tired and needs a bit spending on it as it didn't look any different to the last time we stayed 18 years ago.

Positives: In a good location near to the centre but still peaceful. Friendly staff. My room was spacious and I didn't have to pay a single supplement for staying in a twin room. Breakfast was filling; buffet style to begin with - get up and choose from cereal, tinned fruit, yoghurt and juice. Table service for the cooked breakfast that followed (bacon was good) along with toast and tea/coffee. I noticed one lady had ordered a kipper which wasn't on the menu so they do cater for special requests if you give them notice. Evening meal was fine but a little pricey.
Better if...
Close attention was paid to thoroughly cleaning surfaces and floors in the room particularly the bathroom. Rusty grab rail in the bathroom was replaced.
Not bad overall and I would go again. You can list lots of small points that explain why the hotel is only two stars but they are minor.

the hotel was very clean but very cluttered and old fashioned. The room we stayed in was small but functional and the bathroom spotless. The bed was very small and seemed to list to one side when we slept in it, making for a poor nights sleep. The breakfast was tasty and plentiful. The free parking around the back is a big bonus in York as is the location which is both close to the city but in a peaceful location near the park. The accommodation was very expensive as we stayed during the Ebor race festival. I would not stay again as the bed was so uncomfortable.

This hotel is very central being close to city centre and railway station. There are no frills in this two star hotel. However, our room and bathroom were both of perfectly adequate size and clean and comfortable. During Ebor race week it was excellent value for money. Breakfast was very good but fresh rather than tinned fruit would be appreciated.. An evening meal is available but we cannot comment as we did not partake.
A few negatives. On early arrival we were rather firmly told that our room would not be available until 1:30 and we overheard other early arrivals being similarly informed. Rules are rules but a little more flexibility in this area would be beneficial. We did eventually get our room at 12;30. I would not necessarily expect a room safe in a 2* hotel but usually you are offered the facility of putting something in the hotel safe. The best we were offered was to have something left on a shelf in a locked room behind reception.
The free WIFI worked well in downstairs sitting rooms.
All in all we would definitely return.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back overlooking small attractive garden and car park are best.
