“Great little hotel - fantastic location”
Reviewed 19 July 2012 via mobile

Spent 2 nights here on strength of trip advisor comments - and it delivered. Very friendly and accommodating staff. Room 9 - very nice although a tight squeeze to negotiate around the bed in the room. Lots of complimentary bits and pieces including a chocolate cake which appeared in our room (possibly as they had made a note that it was out anniversary) - a lovely touch. Fantastic location just minutes from interesting shopping streets / bars / restaurants / parks / city walls etc. Excellent buffet style breakfast. Only niggle was the shower took ages to get warm and was barely a dribble but having mentioned it on leaving I have no doubt that it will be sorted immediately - we would happily stay here again and recommend to others. We didn't try their evening restaurant or their bar purely as there was some much choice on our door step.

Dear b15plus,
Thank you for your lovely review especially as the shower didn't work properly. Very often people will absolutely villify us for this, forgetting that a broken shower can happen at any time and can be quickly fixed by a competant plumber, which it now has! ......thank you.... thankyou ......for being understanding, kind and generally ....nice!
Kind Regards,
Julie

My husband and I should have spent more time in this lovely place instead of moving on to London. We chose the attic suite as the weather was cool and we didn't need AC. The window views of the Minster and Marygate street were lovely. The bed was soft and we loved the two bathroom idea-one for shower and one for toilet. Very cute room but not for tall people!
Breakfasts were great and the staff always had time for our questions. Our only regret is that we didn't have more time to enjoy the quaint lounge and try the restaurant (dinner chef was on vacation). But we did enjoy the afternoon tea and cakes! Thanks Julie and staff-you were all wonderful :)

Dear Mona thankyou for your review, some people find room 14 a little small however I am really pleased that you enjoyed it and we do have a family of 3 that love it and request it every year.
I will show your review to the staff and once again a big thankyou

This was by no means our first visit to the lovely old city of York. It was however the first time we had actually stopped there for longer than a mere day trip and after a visit to the trusty Trip Advisor site we finally decided to spend our 7-day break in the Coach House Hotel in Marygate; a mere stone's throw from the Minster and with a commodity that's quite rare in this or any large town or city - A free parking spot!

As usual the Trip Advisor reviews were on the whole accurate and I'm happy to report that the majority were favourable to the Coach House, a condition that as the days passed we wholeheartedly concurred with. The initial welcome from Katie was warm and friendly as she escorted us to our ground-floor bedroom, which on the whole was adequate. The room was spotlessly clean and the beds comfortable and for perhaps a couple of nights stay, quite acceptable. However, as we were in residence for a full week some minor shortcomings could not be ignored.

The proportions of the toilet/washbasin area were no doubt fine for those of petite stature but proved to be somewhat of a challenge for those of more average proportions. So tiny was this room that all ablutions could be performed with little or no perambulatory movement required and multi-tasking was certainly not beyond the realms of possibility within the confined space allocated. The shower room was similarly proportioned and required some skilful and adroit manoeuvrings to enter the actual shower cubicle. However, as the bulk of holiday time is not usually spent in such mundane surroundings they were considered but a minor blip.

A far more serious shortcoming however, according that is to the wife, was the lack of a dressing table and mirror. I, being a mere male of course was happy to use the (smallish) wardrobe mirror, but 'She who must be displayed' was somewhat disappointed at the lack of what she maintains is an absolutely necessary and basic requirement for any woman who needs to look her best. She however battled bravely on with what was available and each morning and evening managed to emerge looking her usual immaculate best despite this somewhat 'unforgivable oversight' by the management.

But enough of the negatives as there were certainly enough plus points to cancel out any downbeat issues that we encountered. Let's start with the food. Well for a relatively small hotel it was excellent, both in quality and portion sizes. The breakfast was buffet style - but don't let that dissuade you. There was food to suit all tastes and appetites, ranging from a well-stocked cold table to every item those aficionados of hot hearty breakfasts could ever imagine. For those on half-board terms, the evening meals were equally acceptable and the menu, whilst not being expansive, was always accompanied by a couple or more 'specials' to spice up the choice. A distant view of the Minster whilst dining, illuminated by the late evening sun was an added bonus - and at no extra cost!

All the staff members had obviously been selected for their people skills and appeared most happy in their duties. Katie in particular was most helpful in making our stay a pleasant one and nothing was too much trouble for her (Julie, look after this one!). The lounge and public areas were snug and comfortably furnished, a perfect venue for a chat with fellow residents over pre-dinner drinks.

On arrival there were a couple of rather unique but welcome touches not usually found in a small hotel that certainly earned 'brownie points' for Julie Thomson, the hotel owner. These included a complimentary bottle of 'Minster Ale' for me whilst my good lady made the most of the free chocolates. There was also limitless complimentary tea and coffee, accompanied by a variety of homemade cakes served in the lounge throughout most of the day.

All in all we had a most enjoyable stay at the Coach House and if we ever return for a holiday in York we would look no further than this delightful little oasis in Marygate. How then could the visit have been improved on? Well Julie, you've almost got it right, but maybe 'Those who must be adorned' would certainly welcome a small dressing table and mirror!

Room Tip: If a dressing table & mirror are essential for your stay then the ground floor room is not for y...

We have just had a very pleasant stay at the Coach House Hotel in York. The hotel was very helpful and as we were staying for a whole week we were moved to the self contained flat down the road, which was ideal and we still had breakfast at the hotel and could park our car there. The hotel was ideally situated to explore York and the staff were all very friendly and helpful. Although the car park was small the staff competently moved the cars around when you needed to get out. We ate at the restaurant a couple of evenings and the food was very good and reasonably priced.

if you want a four star hotel then dont stay here, but if you want four star service, food, friendliness then this is the place for you.the coach house is old and creaky with lots of atmosphere it is five minutes from the minster and ten minutes from the railway station, there is a pub next door if required and i would certainly stay again.

Room Tip: ask for a room on the back if noise bothers you as the pub chucks out quite late

Dear Janet,
Thankyou for your positive review. The pub next door is a great place and they send us business and we send them business which is how things should operate. Our close proximity to all the main attractions is a big plus and I think our staff are the most accommodating and friendly because they enjoy their work and it shows! Thankyou.
